Please support a Europe-wide missing child alert system

popstar · 11/04/2008 22:03

Kate and Gerry McCann have been in Brussels at the European Parliament presenting a declaration proposing a Europe wide alert system when a child goes missing. The similar AMBER alert system used in the US has led to the successful recovery of many abducted children. 393 MEPs need to sign this in order for it to be looked into.

Please take a moment to click on the link in order to identify your MEP and request that they sign the declaration to move this proposal forward.

Here is a sample text which you can cut and paste-

I am writing to request that you sign the declaration presented to the
European Parliament by Kate and Gerry McCann requesting a Europe-wide
alert system and telephone hotline for when a child is abducted.

We will never know whether this would have helped in their own case and
led to the recovery of their daughter, Madeleine, but there is
overwhelming evidence from the United States that such a system can
prove crucial in recovering an abducted child before they are harmed.

I feel it is vitally important for the safety of all our children that
the implementation of such a system receives your full support.

done it too

Budcat · 16/04/2008 03:35

Done. It is very quick and easy. Just awaiting a response!

Rose99 · 16/04/2008 05:15

Oh sorry CoteDzur, I posted in a hurry and you are right I didn't read your post properly.

LaComtesse · 16/04/2008 13:42

I've had confirmation from 3 of my MEPs but I won't have my dd microchipped.

Nbg · 16/04/2008 20:20

Just wanted to say that 2 out of the 5 have emailed me back.
This the response I have had;

"Ms. Wallis is the sponsor, together with several MEPs from different political groupings, of this written declaration. This declaration (similar to an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons) will be launched next week during the plenary session of the European Parliament. Ms. Wallis has therefore not only signed up to it, but is committed to getting others sign up too. If we reach an absolute majority of MEPs (390), then the proposal will be sent to Council and Commission."

and

"Thank you for your message regarding the Amber Alert system.

At the moment the wording of the Written Declaration has not yet been
published and so is not yet available for signing.

Mr Corbett will, of course, give serious attention to this Written
Declaration and will send everyone who has written to him on this matter
a reply when the WD is published."

So the second isnt very positive but I thought the first was a great response.

popstar · 16/04/2008 21:02

I got a reply from one of my other MEPs actually containg the declaration. It just seems like common sense to me!

Here it is-

WRITTEN DECLARATION

pursuant to Rule 116 of the Rules of Procedure

by Roberta Angelilli, Glenys Kinnock, Edward McMillan-Scott, Evelyne Gebhardt, Diana Wallis

on emergency co-operation in recovering missing children

Lapse date: [17.7.2008]

[34/2008]

Written declaration on emergency co-operation in recovering missing children

The European Parliament,

?having regard to Rule 116 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas the abduction of a child is amongst the most inhumane of crimes,

B. whereas the commission of such crimes is increasing in Europe and may involve transporting victims across state borders,

C. whereas the prospects of saving the life of an abducted child decreases as time passes,

D. whereas there is no Europe-wide alert system for child disappearances nor any local or national systems throughout much of the European Union,

  1. Calls on Member States to introduce a missing child alert system, the activation of which shall require the immediate supply to relevant news media, border authorities, customs and law enforcement agencies, details of:
  • The missing child, with a photograph if available
  • Information relevant to the disappearance and/or the suspected abductor(s)
  • A telephone number to call with information (116 000 where operational)
  1. Calls on Member States to reach cooperation agreements with all bordering states to ensure the capacity to raise an alert rapidly across any relevant territories;
  1. Calls for the development of a common organisation to provide assistance and training to national bodies;
  1. Instructs its President to forward this declaration, together with the names of the signatories, to the Commission and Council.

done. to all six.

i changed the wording as the site stated pasted messages would be blocked. is that a fib?

MrsOnTheMove · 18/04/2008 19:50

I've done also!

Amey · 21/04/2008 19:11

Another positive reply form a London MEP.

'The Written Declaration on this subject was in fact tabled this week by
my Conservative colleague Edward McMillan Scott and I have signed it.
Best wishes. John Bowis'

I've done a rough count based on the replies on this thread and there could be, at the most, 6 (if I'm not double counting) MEP's who have signed or plan to sign.

And we need 393 MEPs to sign to get anything to happen!!!

popstar · 23/04/2008 23:16

Depressing, isn't it, Amey. What are these UKIP MEPs all about? Well, I know what they're all about but do they have to oppose every single thing in the European Parliament even if it's something potentially beneficial?

Anyway, hopefully other countries will be on board, particularly France and Greece which already have alert systems.

I'm also a bit despondant about the way some MNetters seem unwilling to see past their prejudices about the McCann's to judge the proposal on it's own merits and then decide whether or not to support it.

Amey · 25/04/2008 14:44

Popstar.

Well the good news is another MEP has signed the declaration - Mary Honeyball. I do not understand any MEP's reluctance to sign, when it's a chance to show the value of the European Parliament.

On the attitude of some MNetters. People blame the McCanns for what happened to Madeline, to 'protect themselves'. The thinking being 'I wouldn't do exactly as the McCanns did' so my child is safe.

The aim of the declaration is to support the police in the fast recovery of missing children across Europe. Surely that is in the interest of all of us.

Amey · 25/04/2008 15:04

Popstar,

Just re-read your post and now understand your UKIP point. It must be an odd job being part of an organisation you don't believe in! If I was one of them I would sign. It would reflect well on them personally and they could always tell us how much better/quicker the amber alert system could have been achieved without a European Parliament!!! and get good publicity for it.

popstar · 30/04/2008 22:33

If you've been watching the excellent documentary tonight with the McCanns highlighting just how important this is and you felt compelled to do anything you possibly could to get this system in front of the European parliament please petition your MEP.
Thank you.

Also interesting to find out that the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in the us receives $21 million a year from the US government. Blows UKIPs argument about there being no governmental involvement out of the water.

youngbutnotdumb · 01/05/2008 10:38

Well have just wrote to all my MEP'S in support of the Amber alert. Last night on news at 10 they said that in France the alert has been used 5 times and in each case the child was returned as a direct result of the alert. I stated this in my letter so am hoping it heps a little. Cna't understand why they don't already have it

youngbutnotdumb · 01/05/2008 10:40

Fantasic!!! Have just heard back from MEP and said that has already been supporting this matter for a long time!
