Hi all, am also waiting anxiously for news of friends working in Sri Lanka (near Mirissa) and the Andaman Islands (Havelock Island). Had a call re: my own field epidemiology services (I work in outbreak control) but with this pg am not fit enough at present

If anyone would care to join me in helping how we can, the British Red Cross have an appeal up already:

www.redcross.org.uk/news_subsection.asp?id=40238

I'm so pleased we found Lou. xx

How amazing that you have been able to send us that, Lou! So glad you were lucky, hope your friends are too, sad for the unlucky ones though. Good luck for the rest of the trip, hope you get through OK and get home on time.

wobblystarryknicks · 27/12/2004 13:24

Fantastic to hear from you lou, hope the rest of the holiday goes 'ok'.

StuffTheMagicTurkey · 27/12/2004 13:27

So glad you and your family are ok Lou.

It's difficult to take in the enormity of this disaster - I look at the estimated death toll and keep thinking I must be misreading it .

Thought of Lou and her family as soon as I saw this on the news the other day.

Got back from xmas visits today and desparate to find out if they are all ok. SO GLAD it's good news.

Mumsnet is very powerful isn't it? I was really, genuinely worried about someone I have only ever seen a photo of. Fantasic that it all ok for you Lou.

I hope all the people on MN who are affected by this have good news.

sarahu · 27/12/2004 17:44

thanks everyone..........its now nearly 1 am here again we haven't had much sleep these last few days. the international school where I work has turned into a sort of refugee centre so we have 300+ tourists who have either been evacuated from hotels or discharged from hospital staying with us in the boarding houses.

as for my friends, some good news - one friend in hospital OK but has had two operations on her foot (not sure what happened to it). Her Thai boyfriend also alive though he is fairly ill...under close observation. Her mum and brother are also safe, one with broken leg and the brother's girlfriend is in a hospital here in PHuket, safe. However my friends Dad, sister and older brother are still missing so we are still checking all the lists frequently.

There has been another quake in the Andaman islands within the last couple of hours, not sure of any effects of that. I am inland in phuket and i think it wil lbe a long time before i go near the beach. there have been 27 afterschocks so far. we felt another tremor a few hours ago.

My friends boyfriend was a hero - he pulled lots of people out of the rubble and out of submerged bungalows (their resort was completely deluged with water). I just hope he will be OK - he is such a lovely guy.

Some other friends were up in Khao Lak on the mainland and they ended up helping out in hospitals there and in Phang nga all night and most of today. The stories they have told about what they saw are horrendous.

thanks for all your good wishes, it does help. fingers crossed please for the last 3 member of my friends family.

sorry for the typos am exhausted and now finally going to sleep

tillykins · 27/12/2004 18:27

Hope you get good news of the rest of your friend's family soon, Sarahu, and your friend's partner sounds like such a hero. Thinking of you all out there, what a hideous tragedy. Second year running a catastrophic earthquake strikes on December 26th...

Friend of mine on hols in Thailand with her DH and two sons (my DD's best friend). Am so worried about them, have no idea where they were staying, but know it was on the beach somewhere. Have tried the helpline and can't get through, and have tried her mobile, which goes straight to message. Just hope they are ok....
