Jack Monroe on BBC Question Time tonight

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 01/06/2023 08:53

JM is a guest tonight, along with Chris Patton, chancellor Oxford University, Nimco Ali, The Five Foundation, Jess Phillips, Labour and George Freeman, Conservative. She is described by the BBC as an activist.
Genuinely interested to see what she has to say ‘in the flesh’ and how she comes across as I’ve only read her Twitter responses to her critics on Twitter and articles either holding her up as a saviour of the poor or alternatively, condemning her for grifting.

Did she wear her pov jumper with the sleeves rolled up so that everyone could identify her by her tattoos?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/06/2023 00:04

What, on Twitter?

No, on telly

God, twitter is awful. That sycophantic cringe! And I don't really have anything against Jack Munroe, I barely know who she is, but that Twittery way of conversing is just - ugh.

She only allows people she follows to reply, so all the responses will be sugary sweet.

As ever, what is the point of this thread when you have two threads on the go on Tattle to have fun on? You're not spreading the good word, you're just chatting to each other on a different website.

Hi, Jack!

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 02/06/2023 08:40

Almost immediately after broadcasting, she tweeted:

“Thanks all for your supportive #BBCQT comments tonight - all I try to do is carry a message, that millions of people who don’t get the same opportunities, need those in power to hear. I don’t always get it right, but I do my best. (And no, we don’t get the questions in advance!”

And immediately her acolytes followers dutifully supplied the gushing compliments about her wonderful performance. To me, she didn’t contribute that much, just the usual and predictable, ‘evil Tories, cost of living crisis, pay people more’ etc etc. But, tbf much the same as many other random guests the BBC often pick do.

Whether the panel get the questions in advance is a moot point - they’re always about something current in the news, so not that hard to revise for and have a stock answer ready.

Likewise.
I don’t actually have a problem with anyone making an effort to look smart and professional when appearing in the media. It’s just if one’s agenda is poverty activism, it seems rather fluffy to be showing off to your followers the coordinated outfit with the killer heels you are planning on wearing (and thereby fishing for compliments)
Just wear whatever you want to without comment. That’s what grownups do.

Look smart?

I thought she looked like she'd slept in a skip. Her jacket looked filthy.

Of course, I'm old - maybe it's "grunge" or whatever. I didn't think she came across particularly well - tbh, I didn't think she came across at all. Very vapid.

I'm ashamed to say I thought that Tory bloke did best (never thought I'd a) hear myself say that or b) admit to it in public).

They won't be showing the bit where she said she vapes, as does her 13 year old.

No money for food, but found it for nicotine - which means she was a smoker.

She really should not have said that about her son.

Hi, Jack!

🤣 hey Jack! You've missed the two ongoing ones on here as well asking about the money that you had GoFunded.

It's awful isn't it, an echo chamber full of people who don't like you having a dig. Bit like your own Twitter account but the other way round. And of course, on here, people ARE allowed to defend you. Not that there are many left who do.

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 02/06/2023 08:47

I honestly thought she was fine. If you don't know much about her you wouldn't have thought anything bad about her really.

Blueta · 02/06/2023 08:54

I don’t know who she is, but she was trending on Twitter last night for her straight talking response about the ‘cost of austerity crisis’. I thought she was good.

bottomlypotts22 · 02/06/2023 10:51

I don't disagree with her politics but I think it's fucking laughable to have an anti poverty campaigner on there who has conned decent, working class people out of money. She lies constantly about her life, her finances, one minute she's homeless the next she's doing up her house and wearing designer clothes. I used to support her because I liked her message and what she stood for but how can you support someone who is so morally bankrupt?

“Remember if you happen to think you see someone shoplifting nappies and baby formula, you definitely didn’t see a damn thing.

And if you’re more outraged at the desperate human being risking criminality to feed and care for an infant, than you are at the systemic and deliberately inflicted poverty state that forces them to have to do it in the first place, you’ve got your moral compass on the wonk”

Todays tweet from her. Clearly, she doesn’t have a problem with theft. Stealing is wrong, and no justification for it, because someone somewhere has to pay whether it’s the shop owner or others when the prices are increased to cover the cost. I actually think that it’s quite insulting and patronising to those struggling to do the morally right thing to suggest it’s acceptable to take someone else’s property.

I'm not Jack. I don't even like her. I posted regularly on the Tattle thread on the early days when it was fun and light-hearted.

But now I think your commitment to her absolute destruction has become weird.

Florissante · 02/06/2023 11:33

Baby formula is easy to sell, which is why it is often shoplifted.

superplumb · 09/06/2023 06:54

Isn't she wealthy now because she sued katie Hopkins?

Florissante · 09/06/2023 06:58

No. Her damages were fairly limited. It was the legal costs that caused Hopkins to have to sell her home.

Monroe, by her own admission, has pissed away a large sum of money on six expensive sideboards. She also has a number of expensive items (an Emin, Burberry scarf, Tiffany earrings, Vivienne Westwood clothing) that she claims were either gifted or were "found in a muddy puddle".

That said, I suspect that Monroe has more money than she publicly admits to.

DNR94 · 21/06/2023 00:34

I find her utterly insufferable ! A weird rattling rabbit caught in the headlights on live TV, an obnoxious gobshite on twitter, with all her ridiculous ideas and answers to everything! Another 30p lee on the left this time! Cannot stand her one bit, and I think that seems to be the concensus
