Meghan keeps getting awards, while Kate doesn’t

Meghan just got yet another award, without much evidence how she does support and empower women and girls (I’m not saying she doesn’t , just she gets more publicity out of getting her awards than the actual work).
At the same time Kate evidently does a lot of support for a variety of charities, but no news of her collecting any awards for it.
Any thoughts?

'In December 1995, Princess Diana received the United Cerebral Palsy Humanitarian of the Year Award in New York City for her philanthropic efforts.'

So yes, royals can get an award. (gasp)

She was no longer HRH, she and Prince Charles separated in 1992, divorced 1996.

BriarHare · 18/05/2023 20:48

What dies Kate do? Lends her name to a few things, because she had to.

She does the occasional rubbish speech. She’s not exactly making a difference.

StopStartStop · 18/05/2023 20:48

😂

Catherine has already won everything she needs. She's daughter in law to the king and queen, married to the heir to the throne and mother to the second, third and fourth in line. (I think. You can put me straight if I'm wrong and I won't mind at all).

It would have to be a pretty impressive 'award' to top all that.

Gingerkittykat · 18/05/2023 21:00

Kate's reward is to have people on Mumsnet fawn over her.

She's happened to marry the right man and produce some very photogenic kids, she even popped down to a scout hut with a shovel and camera crew for a couple of hours.

OhcantthInkofaname · 18/05/2023 21:04

Meghan volunteers for some organizations. With Kate that's her job. She gets that royal allowance.

Ndd135632 · 18/05/2023 21:06

She lives a fake life in a fake world with fake awards. Look on linked in. Plenty others do the same. Good luck to them

caringcarer · 18/05/2023 21:07

Meghan has said she only does charity work for 1 hour a week. Can't think she deserves an award for that. Many others fo far more.

Tinkerbyebye · 18/05/2023 21:09

Catherine does not need awards, she just gets on with it and doesn’t need to validate herself

Meghan May win awards, but they don’t mean much in the real world

Ndd135632 · 18/05/2023 21:09

Has anyone looked at linked in recently and all the people winning awards. Seriously. Means shite

Ok, agreed.
If I need to paraphrase the question, do you think MM nominates herself / people close to her nominate her for these awards for publicity?

Yes because that’s how these awards are given. There is no other reason behind it. If it is someone on her behalf then Meghan clearly doesn’t object or else she wouldn’t collect the awards. However, Meghan isn’t the only one whose awards are bought as all the other people at the ceremonies have done the same thing.

JaneJeffer · 18/05/2023 21:12

Poor Kate

Meghan keeps getting awards, while Kate doesn’t
WinnieTheW0rm · 18/05/2023 21:16

It's not a competition, and I'm not sure whether Royals could accept awards of that kind anyhow

Princess Anne was nominated (by President Kaunda of Zimbabwe) for the Nobel Peace Prize - for 30 years of solid work for Save The Children - she didn't win, but as her name went forward then presumably there isn't an absolute ban.

The Princess of Wales has actually won a number of "woman of the year" type awards (from various bodies I'd never heard of - thank you google) but I don't think she's ever turned up to receive anything

It's very interesting how these awards work. They're like a circuit. They give awards to each other, often accompanied with a monetary gift to their charity. And then that charity gives awards and a donation. It's all done to raise publicity for the charity and for the awardee. Which is not to say that at some point the money received doesn't get passed out to a good cause but you can't help but think there'd be less of the money gone in admin costs if the money had just been donated directly.
I remember Harry was invited to speak at the UN on Mandela Day, which was a big honour. It turned out that the Mandela Foundation had made a series of documentaries that was waiting to be released and needed some funding. In return for Harry funding it, he got to speak at the UN.
Not that Harry was unworthy to speak or anything, but it's not like they cast their eye over the world and settled on Harry, that's all I'm saying.

BDutton · 18/05/2023 21:25

This is really interesting- thank you for sharing.

It’s Kate’s job.

I wouldn’t mind ditching the 9-5 for a flash wardrobe, big blow out & to potter round charity centres every other day.

No idea why meghan’s getting any awards other than to get that charity more attention & funding.

And just to add, the Ms Foundation For Women award ceremony last night for 6 women winners was started by Gloria Steinem. She and MM have become good friends since MM approached GS to ask if she'd help her with her work for the Democratic party. They've stayed friends, GS has appeared in their documentary series, and GS said she'd help MM wherever she could. And, lo, MM gets an award from GS's charity.
Again, not saying she didnt deserve it, I don't know, but that's how awards work in charities in the US. It's a bit different in the UK for a variety of reasons.
Oh, and MM & PH won an award from the Robert Kennedy Foundation. And coincidentally, the woman who runs the foundation and made that award is the sister of Rory Kennedy who owns a documentary production company with Liz Garbus, the producer and director of PH & MNs Netflix documentary, Harry &Meghan. And the award was 2 days before the release of that documentary. Good for publicity. Even more so because the award was in honour of their 'heroic' fight against racism in the Royal Family (which a few weeks later Harry denied existed). Of course that excited people to watch thinking there'd be more gossip about that.
Mthen again, maybe I'm cynical and it was all a coincidence. 😄
But see how everything is about who you know.

Lampzade · 18/05/2023 22:05

What a strange thread.
These women are living different lives. Why the obsession with Meghan and her awards?
If she is irrelevant, why are people so interested in what she does

Haywirecity · 18/05/2023 22:07

If she is irrelevant, why are people so interested in what she does.

Why are you calling her irrelevant? She won an award last night? 🤔

BodegaSushi · 19/05/2023 00:21

Are you quite alright Confused

LBFseBrom · 19/05/2023 00:49

I don't think Meghan is 'irrelevant', I find her very interesting and quite admire her. However the reason she gets so much negative attention is because people are influenced by the media and enjoy thinking the worst of others. They latch on to the smallest thing, taking it out of context and blowing it up out of all proportion.

RedToothBrush · 19/05/2023 01:02

This is hilarious.

Awards are the result of PR teams scrabbling around for publicity. It's about generating interest in the brand.

The Royals don't need to promote the brand in the same way. They are THE brand.

It's the key difference between being in the form and outside it.

Royals promote causes. Not personalities.

Using the example of Diana getting an award after her separation from Charles kinda proves the point somewhat.

Throwncrumbs · 19/05/2023 01:23

Yo get an award in the US for opening an envelope!

Channellingsophistication · 19/05/2023 07:25

The award is just publicity. I’d like to know what Meghan has done for her lifetime of promoting advocacy for women and girls….

I know many women who have worked tirelessly for 30 years for charities who’ve never looked for an award…

She was speaking up for women before her marriage and what awards did she get then? She's giving out the exact same nessage so what's the difference between then and now? Only that her relationship to Queen Elizabeth opened doors so that she could cultivate people who happen to give awards. Awards in the US are less about what you do and more about who you know.

Desperado40 · 18/06/2023 07:38

What exactly would Kate get an award for? Smiling, waving and looking pretty? She could actually make a lot of difference in her position, but she has no voice and is as bland as a dead fish.
