Reports of trouble in East Leicester. I don't live there but do have an interest in the area. Does anyone local know exactly what's going on? The news reports are pretty vague...

Muslim v Hindu

The BBC report was very weirdly vague on this.

Yes, I kind of picked that up from the BBC, but I just wondered exactly what had happened.

Yes, I thought that.

‘youths’ have been fighting in the street, it’s apparently set off by ‘renewed tensions’ over the Pakistan/India border

Freedomfighters · 18/09/2022 11:04

I've been trying to find out more about this. Its all very deliberately (?) vague.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 18/09/2022 11:08

Thank you for the link @PestorPeston .

Glad I'm not the only one struggling to work out what's going on, @Freedomfighters .

It's upsetting to read about the tensions that have arisen recently.

Looks like this has been building up for maybe a couple of weeks. The video footage is worrying. I wonder why there's been so little detailed reporting on it.

Freedomfighters · 18/09/2022 11:27

There's a bit from the BBC. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-62943952.amp

I remember my ex housemate at university telling me that his Grandfather had been murdered by Hindus, old wounds run deep.

Babyroobs · 18/09/2022 11:29

I think it started after a cricket match !

FrownedUpon · 18/09/2022 11:31

The recent India v Pakistan cricket match set off rivalries apparently. Large groups of young men gathering & fighting.

Babyroobs · 18/09/2022 11:31

I live just outside Leicester and hadn't heard anything about any trouble until today until I read about it in a national newspaper.

Yes, I read that too, but that's just bizarre. I'm sure that there's more to it than that.

The current economic situation can't be helping. There is a lot of poverty in Leicester, and people must be feeling the squeeze right now.

I hope that things calm down soon.

Cricket, always cricket. We're told it's a gentleman's game but oh no.

Yes obviously that was just the trigger. And yes huge areas of poverty in Leicester in contrast to many many very wealthy asians.

It's not that bizarre. There are huge tensions between India and Pakistan and this just brings them to the fore.

Sunsea21 · 18/09/2022 11:42

I used to live in Leicestershire and gang Fights between different ethnic groups would happen in the city most weeks sadly

“It's not that bizarre. There are huge tensions between India and Pakistan and this just brings them to the fore.”

yes, was reported on BBC radio news this morning that the cricket was the catalyst.

as someone said earlier, old wounds run deep and it doesn’t take much to reopen them.

megletthesecond · 18/09/2022 11:45

Men. As usual.

No, I'm aware of that, obviously. But India-Pakistan matches happen often enough without trouble, so why was this one different?

@Sunsea21, really? My impression had always been that people rubbed alongside each other pretty peacefully in the city. Of course, there will always be isolated incidents, but I wasn't aware of significant longstanding tensions? Maybe I have just been blissfully ignorant...

Certainly when I lived there- although I left about 15 years ago. It was extremely segregated. The biggest clashes were Albanians and Asians and it was very common to see them chasing and fighting jn thr middle of the day

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 18/09/2022 11:48

I do know that tensions generally run high with India-Pakistan matches. I just don't think they usually spill over into community violence?
