No, I didn't link it at all, I didn't mention the protests at all, you've done that. The general feeling being spouted across social media was what I was referring to, maybe try not to join the dots when they arent there.

Sandybval · 21/06/2020 11:37

I didnt even know reading had a protest that day to be honest.

MrsJamin · 21/06/2020 11:46

I haven't seen any social media having a go at police in the UK, perhaps you need to follow someone different or make some new friends!

Sandybval · 21/06/2020 11:50

Haha really, not even just social media, have you not seen acab plastered over stuff?

Shinesweetfreedom · 21/06/2020 12:04

@MrsJamin
If you go on the BLM funding page.their aim is to defund the police

GetOffYourHighHorse · 21/06/2020 12:09

'haven't seen any social media having a go at police in the UK, '

Even if you unbelievablly haven't seen 'all cops are bastards' and 'fuck the police' all over social media then surely you've seen placards saying just that at some protests?

It has been declared a terrorist incident so not a random attack. While it may be unrelated to earlier protests the fact is people protesting in support of a political movement that think all cops are bastards are the very same people reliant on them in a terrorist attack.

growinggreyer · 21/06/2020 12:10

Defund the police means put more money into social services and welfare so that people who are homeless or drug dependent can get more assistance not just criminalised. It is an American perspective because they have a militarised police force that uses deadly force against their own citizens. It is not a campaign that we need to have in this country. We need to look into certain specific issues in relation to policing with consent. I don't think that is a phrase that American police forces use, to be honest.

ArriettyJones · 21/06/2020 12:11

It’s time we criminalised the act of posting footage of violent crime (and its aftermath) online.

It’s disrespectful of victims, it causes distress and - in cases of terrorism, which I know this incident might not be - it helps the terrorists spread the terror.

Just because the internet is hard to police, doesn’t mean we can’t have national laws covering footage of incidents that take place here, that is uploaded from here.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 21/06/2020 12:14

'It’s time we criminalised the act of posting footage of violent crime (and its aftermath) online. It’s disrespectful of victims, it causes distress and - in cases of terrorism'

Yes it does. I also thought the same when I saw the footage of George Floyd's murder.

annabel85 · 21/06/2020 12:32

Tragic and just shows these things can happen anywhere. A park of all places.

ArriettyJones · 21/06/2020 12:52

It’s now being treated as terrorism;

ArriettyJones · 21/06/2020 12:54

Yes it does. I also thought the same when I saw the footage of George Floyd's murder.

That’s slightly different, though. If his family approved the release of the footage in a planned way to combat something evil, that’s something else. Even then, I think there should be a time limit on it and then the poor man should be allowed to RIP.

Oldsu · 21/06/2020 12:55

@Tanith

'do hope the hero policeman who according to the press disarmed the attacker was not one of the ones that both sides of the recent protests threw missiles at.'

Hardly likely!
The BLM protest earlier was a peaceful event and more of a discussion.. Reading is proudly multicultural.

The Forbury Gardens is a quiet, peaceful place in the grounds of the old Reading Abbey ruins and, at the time of the attack, there would have been groups of people sitting around and enjoying the peace.
This attack hardly seems possible, and they're now saying it's a random attack by someone with mental health issues.

Why not, Police from other forces were deployed over last weekend who's to say he wasn't one of them? and even if he wasn't he would be aware of the disgusting comments, graffiti and placards telling him he is a pig and a bastard because of the job he does and he certainly would have been aware of the violence that his fellow officers had to put up with from both sides.
MrsJamin · 21/06/2020 13:29

I don't know why you lot are trying to derail this into a discussion about BLM. This is about a terrorist attack on innocent lives in Reading.

YgritteSnow · 21/06/2020 13:51

Well when I read about this and how as always the police are running toward the terror thus allowing civilians to run away from it where possible, I certainly was reminded of the abuse they've received over the past few weeks. I don't think it's that much of a stretch to connect them in that way.

ArriettyJones · 21/06/2020 13:54

What? I don’t understand your objection.

You do know racist policing and police violence also takes “innocent lives”, right?

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 21/06/2020 13:57

He'd been in prison for a minor offence.

he'd attacked an emergency service worker, got sentenced for that, then attacked the judge who sentenced him, and got sentenced for that as well.

All this happened in 2019 and he's out in the UK to murder people in June!

Fucking batshit crazy.

And BLM want to defund the police and less prison? Fucking arseholes.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 21/06/2020 13:58

Anyone who filmed this to upload to Twitter should be arrested, tried and prosecuted imvho.

I know there's no accounting for stupid or insensitive, but there really should be.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 21/06/2020 14:03

It's relevant that BLM is massively in the news, this happened just after a BLM protest even though it wasn't connected, that BLM say they want to develop 'strategies for the abolition of police', yet in comparison with the US where there are indeed long prison sentences this man was out of prison after assaulting a judge and an emergency services worker (not sure if police or ambulance) and free to attack people.

It's highly relevant that a man who assault a policeman AND a (female) judge was out of prison to commit mass murder a few months later, yet BLMUK employs the same rhetoric as BLM US in terms of reducing prison and

If we can have weeks of illegal protests in the UK over a man being murdered by cops in the US, damn straight we can discuss the facts of a man who was out of prison after attacking cops AND a judge AND was not a UK citizen.

Or is shit that happens in other people's countries a really serious matter for us to protest about in the UK but when it happens in our own country we're just supposed to shrug and say 'mental health issues' like a pathetic sheep.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 21/06/2020 14:05

For what crime?

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 21/06/2020 14:08

he also had a conviction for knife crime.

BLM will never be taken seriously when calling to defund the police and clear out the prisons.

Our emergency services can never be taken for granted.

MrsJamin · 21/06/2020 14:49

I'll let you chat about the police and BLM and I'll go away and mourn for our peaceful community instead.

LastTrainEast · 21/06/2020 14:59

"Anyone who filmed this to upload to Twitter should be arrested, tried and prosecuted" I don't much like it, but stop and think a moment. That is the whole purpose/method of the media.

is it immoral/illegal when the Sun or Daily Mail do it?

LastTrainEast · 21/06/2020 15:01

Something that does make me mad is that about now someone will be saying on Youtube "that Forbury Gardens incident was faked of course. You can tell it's CGI just looking at it and a whistleblower told me the people were all actors"

That happens every time now.
