from the Press Association - the man who has been arrested is Libyan. The police are treating it as terror related.

ItsInTheShed · 20/06/2020 22:55

terror related, here we go again!

first time for weeks that crowds gather and people are out and about, shame on him!

This is so terrible.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 20/06/2020 22:59

None of the news websites should be even mentioning black lives matter in the headline, this happened at a park where innocent people were sitting in the sunshine.

I imagine they'd mention it if a white man got arrested after a far right protest, whether or not he was known to be connected.

Jenasaurus · 20/06/2020 23:01

Sky news say terror related

TokyoSushi · 20/06/2020 23:04

This looks to be a terrible attack, just awful.

Wankerchief · 20/06/2020 23:06

My teens were at the BLM protest in forbury, it ended way before this. We picked them up at market place and there were very few Protesters left.
Its mostly young to mid 20’s couples/groups and the odd Family in the evenings Sad

Jenasaurus · 20/06/2020 23:07

According to one news article the stabbings were random, those poor people and their families, and why on earth would someone film it.

Pugsrus · 20/06/2020 23:09

Is it not good it’s been filmed ,?so it can be used in evidence?..I just don’t see why it had to be made public ,no reason at all to put it on Twitter ..

ballsdeep · 20/06/2020 23:14

It wasn't filmed for evidence though was it? The film's circulating on twitter are of the aftermath 🤢 why are people such c##ts. Imagine if that was you or a family member bleeding to death on the grass and some cock filmed your last moments to post it on twitter . I hate people sometimes .

Apparently , according to sky news, he ran up to a group of ten people and started stabbing them on the back on the neck and under the arm. They ran so he went to another group and stabbed someone in the back of the neck. I'll Huber understand humans

ItsInTheShed · 20/06/2020 23:16

thank god they caught him though....one less to worry about.

The police haven't yet confirmed if it is a terrorist incidence, but have said anti-terror police are on the scene,

I heard at least one report which suggested MH issues (not specifying what they meant by that)

It'll probably be clearer by morning

Thank you I was going to say that
MrsJamin · 21/06/2020 07:07

I said they shouldn't have mentioned BLM in the headline, as it was unrelated! Three hours gap. It's a lovely small park in the centre of Reading, many people meet there to socialise, eat etc in the summer evenings. Most articles have now just referenced it later in the article to confirm there wasn't a link.
Still waiting to hear about who died. It sounds like the victims probably were from the same group of people. So so sad for our community.

AuntieStella · 21/06/2020 07:07

BBC is now reporting that it was not a terrorist incident, and that it is a murder investigation.

Sandybval · 21/06/2020 09:24

So sad. I wonder when something moves from terrorism to murder, several witnesses state the attacker began running towards them, so it seems indiscriminate and that they wanted to cause the most deaths they could. Those bastard police though, running to help people, taking the suspect into custody to let the system determine a suitable punishment Hmm. The person who filmed it and popped it on social media with their commentary is scum, filming to assist police and not circulate it okay, that's probably useful, but disgusting.

MrsJamin · 21/06/2020 09:25

Bastard police? What are you talking about?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 21/06/2020 09:45

'Those bastard police though, running to help people, '

I know! After hearing 'fuck the police' and 'all cops are bastards' for weeks.

I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed at length on chat or aibu. Of course it was after the BLM protests not connected, however if the victims were black no doubt social media and the MSM would have decided it was all to do with the earlier protest.

Those that have posted footage of the victims being resuscitated are disgusting.

I do hope the hero policeman who according to the press disarmed the attacker was not one of the ones that both sides of the recent protests threw missiles at.
GetOffYourHighHorse · 21/06/2020 10:13

'do hope the hero policeman who according to the press disarmed the attacker was not one of the ones that both sides of the recent protests threw missiles at.'

Indeed. Though tbf it was only a minority on both days throwing missiles we were told. Doesn't compare to the weeks of 'fuck the police' and 'ACAB' does it?

Sandybval · 21/06/2020 10:24

Bastard police? What are you talking about

Where have you been the past few weeks?

Tanith · 21/06/2020 10:29

'do hope the hero policeman who according to the press disarmed the attacker was not one of the ones that both sides of the recent protests threw missiles at.'

Hardly likely!
The BLM protest earlier was a peaceful event and more of a discussion.. Reading is proudly multicultural.

The Forbury Gardens is a quiet, peaceful place in the grounds of the old Reading Abbey ruins and, at the time of the attack, there would have been groups of people sitting around and enjoying the peace.
This attack hardly seems possible, and they're now saying it's a random attack by someone with mental health issues.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 21/06/2020 10:37

'it's a random attack by someone with mental health issues.'

I've read that it was someone with a criminal record but we'll have to wait for the facts.

I saw this on twitter which I thought was very apt at the moment 'so proud to live in a society that understands the stabbings are the work of one evil man and not blamed on an entire race'.

Tanith · 21/06/2020 11:24

Yes, he was known to the police. He'd been in prison for a minor offence.

MrsJamin · 21/06/2020 11:32

The "what are you talking about?" was you relating this to the earlier (like a gap of three hours) BLM demonstration which was super peaceful and respectful to the police. It wasn't super clear that "bastard police" was in some kind of weird sarcasm. The people who were in the park at that time were very unlikely to have been at the earlier demonstration, and the BLM organisers said they had all gone home well before the incident. Reading is super proud of its diversity, partly why its a great place to live. All people who have lived in Reading have at some point chilled out sitting in this lovely little park and it hosts many of Reading's biggest events throughout the year. The fact that it was a random attack on people having a nice time has brought it home that it could have been any of us.
