Saw this coming for a while!

Yes clearly significant problems with the palace and him. He's basically just announced he is no longer a senior royal and will now take on paid work, and split his time between here and North America.

And that he will collaborate with the queen, which must be the most arrogant wording I've ever read. It was fine till they added that bit at the end. It puts him on an equal footing with her. Although earlier he says support. It makes if worse if he didn't tell her.

Clearly a major major problem in the palace, but to announce he's taking on paid employment and will continue to be part of the royal family in his terms is very very arrogant.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 08/01/2020 22:43

‘Collaborate’? She’s the Queen not Ed Sheeran. Arrogance indeed.

StealthPolarBear · 09/01/2020 08:52

I hope they meant cooperate but presumably the wording is checked and isn't accidental

Think Meghan particularly found fitting into the RF difficult think she only has one point of reference - celebrity status, crucial difference between celebs and the RF in that the latter are funded by the taxpayer, and therefore people expect them to promote the UK businesses, charities and good causes. Therefore they have a public duty, I would say the British public would respect their rights to privacy, but the ridiculous amount of "secrecy" demanded is ridiculous. Not being allowed to take photographs of the Duchess, appearing in a private capacity at Wimbledon, the lectures on the planet, followed by the hypocrisy of a significant number of short haul flights, but the stating about having a tough time, when you have been amongst the worlds' poorest, crap timing at best, entitled, shallow and self-centred at worst.
Thought they would have given a bit of thought to the announcement and discussed this with the rest of their family given the other pressures they face at present, (re; Andrew and Philip) feel their behaviour smacks of narcissism, shame, think they could have been a real asset, especially having a black woman in the RF, would have made them feel more relevant. Meghan has stated she doesn't want to be a "voiceless figurehead" unfortunately, that can seem, what it may be, but giving support to organisations, being a neutral figurehead for diplomatic relations, when there are international tensions can be incredibly beneficial to the UK.
Now they want to live in Canada, sad that they do, but not sure how this will work being part of the RF, oh and please could they donate the cost of their wedding and Frogmore cottage back to worthwhile causes in the UK, before they piss off??

NWQM · 09/01/2020 13:45

Not a particular royalist but presumably some of the language is guarded to give wriggle room. Frogmore House belongs to the Queen. If they still use it - and soooo much money has been spent on it then questions would be asked if they didn't - then they are not 'financially independent' unless they rent it. Lots of very minor royals have lots of grace and favour stuff eg at Kensington Palace. I am guessing that any moves towards financial Independence raises some uncomfortable questions for a number of people. At least this couple get that if they didn't work in 'the firm' then 'the firm' shouldn't subsidise them.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/01/2020 18:33

hope they meant cooperate
Well, it’s their official statement, so.....

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/01/2020 18:42

then they are not 'financially independent' unless they rent it
That’s not a bad idea. Prince and Princess Michael of Kent rent their Royal apartment.

BillieEilish · 09/01/2020 19:08

Poor Kates birthday today too.

I think MM really dislikes her.

roisinagusniamh · 09/01/2020 19:36

The best Soap opera ever!

didofido · 10/01/2020 19:11

On TV News at mid-day today there was a Professor of Racial (something) & Technology from Harvard. She said there had been so many racists attacks on Meghan from the outset. What surprised - shocked - me were the examples she gave.

The first was Zara Philips "sneering" during the Wedding. Did anyone see this? I saw her smiling/laughing slightly, and it seemed to be at her own clumsiness because of advanced pregnancy.

The next was, Meghan was described as "difficult". Apparently this is typical covert racism, because being difficult is a stereotypical trope applied to black women! No is isn't! I have difficult white friends.

Not every criticism, true or not, is racist.

roisinagusniamh · 10/01/2020 20:42

As if people don’t sneer at white people!
Zara Philips was sneering at Eugenia’s wedding with Harry and Meghan!!
And difficult ? I’m difficult......my mother is difficult , we’re all difficult and white!!

MustardScreams · 10/01/2020 21:14

Oh ffs. Please don’t be so spectacularly ridiculous to suggest that black people are making up the things that they deem racist. This is SUCH a privileged white person that has never experienced a moment of racism thing to do and it’s incredibly patronising and... yes, racist!

I am black, I know what I’m talking about before anyone wants to tell me “but white people”!!!

I mean any black person.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 10/01/2020 22:02

I don’t think Zara was sneering. I think she found it amusing and a bit ridiculous. As did many people viewing on TV.

SouthWestmom · 10/01/2020 22:22

Think a pp means at Megan's wedding. She was sneering at the speech by the black bishop. To be fair though Meghan also smiled at it - was very long.

Rethpodad · 10/01/2020 23:26

And the. Queen harumpfed

didofido · 11/01/2020 06:47

MustardScreams. - I am certainly NOT suggesting that black people don't suffer racist abuse/comments. How could I know, I'm not black?

Yes, Meghan has endured racist abuse, but not all criticism of her has been because of her ethnicity. I seem to remember Princess Margaret was often described as "difficult", and even " a disgrace".

roisinagusniamh · 11/01/2020 08:55

They Press will always hound them, perhaps even more so now.
Meghan will go down in history for turning her back on the Royal family which I admire greatly.
Harry, not so sure how he will cope with out them , he will miss the status that came with being a Royal and maybe England and the English too.

roisinagusniamh · 11/01/2020 11:57

Clarifying ...I admire her action greatly. I don not admire the Royal family at all

babynewt · 21/01/2020 17:30

Interested when we will hear about who will bear the cost of their security, going to cost a fortune by all accounts, hope they factored this in ?
