it has been on the news that the actor Owen Wilson has apparantly tried to commit suicide.

does anybody agree with me that it has all got a bit ott???, I really understand that it is a sensitive subject for some people, but honestly it gets way too personal on this site sometimes.

i really understand that people are grieving and it is a raw subject, its just that on most threads recently people are taking posts as a personal insult, which in most of these cases i dont belive is true iyswim

Absolutely fawke off.

Hence my commendation of Custardo. Everyone takes every single thing as a personal insult when it honestly isnt, and end up being quite rude in response (I note some deleted posts on here that weren't from Custardo).

I'm sorry for NLNN's loss, I truly am. Having had a friend commit suicide, and a family member attempt it, I do understand the grief. It doesnt mean I can't find humour in something, however close to home.

Nadine, you arent actually really here, are you? You are just an internet figment of ficks imagination.

fick x x x

BandofMothers · 29/08/2007 11:23

Oh people

If Custy had posted under her normal name none of this would have kicked off. But really??? Is all this really nec???

Actually have been wondering who fingers was asa some posts are a bit Custy you norty girl

Aitch · 29/08/2007 11:36

if custy had posted under her usual name it likely wouldn't have kicked off, but tbh that is not necessarily a good thing.

she posted a joke, that's all, but people are sensitive to these things and rather than back down she got more aggro and started getting personal. then it got wildly out of hand, because despite her apology people weren't in the mood. i'd thought it was a joke, for the record, but i can see that it wasn't particularly funny and that some people were too raw to hear it.

seems to me that custy likes to name-change every so often so that she can test to see if people cut their 'friends' (or people who they are too frightened to take on) more slack. well, they do, of course they do. case closed. it really, really doesn't prove that MN is a nest of vipers who don't give a newbie a fair shot.

BandofMothers · 29/08/2007 11:38

really depends what the newbie posts tho doesn't it.

How come you dropped the "twooh"I loved it when you were H2O, that was funny.

fick · 29/08/2007 11:39

LOL BandO

I've actually found some of fishfinger's posts quite delightful.

Aitch · 29/08/2007 11:41

of course it does, that's my poiint. what custy's getting is a true reaction to her posting style, whether she likes it or not is another matter.

UnquietDad · 29/08/2007 11:43

I'd not heard of him until this story came out.

I'm just saying.

BandofMothers · 29/08/2007 11:43

Hmm, I see what you mean.
Really tho, "ladies"

UnquietDad · 29/08/2007 11:47

I've only just realised Perez Hilton is someone different from Paris Hilton.

(I kind of know now how women feel when they say "What's the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars?" and we roll our eyes in despair.)

BandofMothers · 29/08/2007 11:49

I know the difference UD

There is eye candy in Star Wars but not in Star Trek.

BandofMothers · 29/08/2007 11:50

I did NOT know perez and Paris were different.

zippitippitoes · 29/08/2007 11:54

I've never heard of him or kate hudson

I wouldn't like my suicide attempts in the publice eye but i guess if you are famous and presumably they are then it happens

and obviously people react differently to known unknowns than to unknown unknowns when it comes to mumsnet posts

springflowerslapin · 29/08/2007 12:05

I can't BELIEVE my post got deleted! Seems like MNHQ's criteria has dramatically changed

fick · 29/08/2007 12:07

Aitch, it is a good thing I feel. We all need a reality check sometimes, as far as you can have one on the internet.

Because it shows that people are willing to ignore a 'known' poster who may, or may not have posted something crass, but wont ignore an unknown.

I've only just started posting, and have been jumped on quite a few times, when I have said nothing that a few others' havent.

fick · 29/08/2007 12:09

BandO - what is wrong with Patrick Stewart????

springflowerslapin · 29/08/2007 12:11

But fick, with "known" posters, others might know something of their circumstances, recent events etc, feelings about certain topics (this is in general, not specifically Custardo) and thus more understand why they have posted the things they have.

When you get an apparent "newbie" who seems to be posting for the sake of argument, people tend to get a bit more aerated I find.

Anyway, I'm too irritated by MN today, I'm off to read one of the 6 books I just bought!

fick · 29/08/2007 12:19

Surely, if you dont know someone, then it is worthwhile thinking that there might be a reason why they are posting as they do?

It can go both ways. Either people are tolerant, or they arent.

Seems that they arent very on here, right now. I'm not hurt or wounded, dont get me wrong. I just feel it is worth pointing out as someone who has 'watched' for some time.

Boco · 29/08/2007 12:27

I love Owen Wilson - i love The Royal Tennembaums and Bottle Rocket is one of my favourite films, and he has a great nose, and i hope he's ok.

Custys scary alter egos are always finger related. And they get a reaction because they don't seem to be from a newbie at all, but a knowing and fairly disapproving name changer.

springflowerslapin · 29/08/2007 12:28

Sod all this bickering - poor Mummy2TandF lost her husband yesterday . I just saw on the boards. She's such a top girl, she worked so hard on Mile for Maude .

lulumama · 29/08/2007 12:30

am a bit baffled as to why custy had to name change

she is much respected on here for her no nonsense approach and is often sought out for her advice

namechanging to prove a point...i don;t get it?

i have picked up on things posted by newbies / oldies , whoever , if i have found them to be crass/ offensive/ belittling

but whatever i say, i say in my own name
