Anyone else feel Madeline Mccann story overplayed?

Tragic for her family and others who loved her.
I would never blame her parents for efforts they made to keep this in public mind.
The story obviously touched a lot of hearts.
But does it deserve so MUCH attention? In playgroups, schools, cinema, supermarket and street-corner notices a thousand miles away from where she disappeared?

Not trying to get on Sky news, nor am I a heartless b*tch. But I do get upset that so much attention and energy has been devoted to this topic when much worse and more important things are happening in the world.

Even among us parents, surely we should put this in more proportion?

Am I the only one thank thinks like that?

your talking shit.seriously.

they knew madeleiene was there alone cos the mccanns were going out at the same time each night.what exactly has been covered up? that they weren't going back as regularly as they said and had left the doors unlocked? i think anyone can understand why they didn't want these details known, cos they felt so bloody guilty and knew they had done wrong,

why take madeleine? that much is obvious isn't.madeleiene had been picked.they didn't want one of the twins.they wanted her,for whatever reason.

compo · 03/07/2007 12:13

can't believe how much shite is written on this thread.
A friend of a friend is a police officer so obvioulsy knows much more than the hundreds of Portugese police working on the case.
'The case is strange so that means the parents obviously know more than they let on'....
What are you people on?

binkleandflip · 03/07/2007 12:14

I havent said that BTW

edam · 03/07/2007 12:14

Oh for heaven's sake, slinging mud at the McCann's is a really low thing to do. Get your kicks somewhere else - picking on people who are going through unimaginable trauma is just pathetic. Why don't you apply your incredible detective powers to solving the some other mystery where the people concerned are dead and buried and can't be hurt any more?

AND it it is not impossible for a child to be snatched, it's merely very, very rare. You must remember that poor kid who was abducted from her bath, not so long ago? What about Ben Needham?

Electroma · 03/07/2007 12:14

For goodness sake, i never said that made it true. It was just a comment that she made, and I was referring to it as it was what made me think.

Surely we are allowed to discuss, and speculate, at our own free will?

compo · 03/07/2007 12:15

agree entirely with Edam.
I wish you'd discuss and speculate amongst your friends, or like minded people, not on a public forum

Electroma · 03/07/2007 12:16

i'm not slinging mud at the mccanns.

Far, far from it.

NOONE can argue that there is information the public dont get told! FFS that is standard!

TaylorsMummy · 03/07/2007 12:16

sorry, what exactly does your 'friend's wife' think doesn't add up?

MrsSpoon · 03/07/2007 12:16

Joolstoo, don't think anyone has answered you, I believe they have left the apartment they were staying is as the owners now have renters going in for the summer and have rented accommodation nearby, they are still in Portugal AFAIK.

binkleandflip · 03/07/2007 12:16

I believe they were a bit reticent about the details - ie doors open, an hour between checking the children because who would want to admit to it after the event?

But I've never intimated anything fishy about them or the case.

I have said that there is no actual evidence she was abducted as opposed to wandering away and then being picked up or whatever.

furReal · 03/07/2007 12:18

no, it isn't that obvious. There is a lot of talk that Madeleine could even have been "picked" before she left the UK. How realistic is that? The only way you could pick a child to be abducted would be to get to know the family. You couldn't possibly know that the child would be going to Portugal, what resort she would be staying in etc unless you had some kind of insider info.

Come on, paedophiles aren't that picky.

edam · 03/07/2007 12:20

are you a forensic psychologist with experience of working with paedophiles?

TaylorsMummy · 03/07/2007 12:20

i'm not saying she was picked that far in advance

abducting, transporting and hiding 3 children would be far more difficult and would need involve more people,i would.it doesn't surprise me at all that the twins were left.

Kewcumber · 03/07/2007 12:28

Sarah payne was with her brothers and sisters and was the only one snatched.

Kewcumber · 03/07/2007 12:28

bloody hell I'm supposed to have bowed out gracefully

Rhubarb · 03/07/2007 12:29

I'm not going to add to your speculations, but it's a sad person indeed who thinks they can solve a case based on media reports.

Of course there are things you are not told, the general public are not detectives and all the media are interested in is getting a good story.

I find it perplexing that the very people who have been objecting to the media furore surrouding Madeleine are the ones now speculating using details they must have memorised from a dozen newspapers.

mumemma · 03/07/2007 12:29

Every time the BBC News website runs a story on Madeleine, it is always listed in the top 5 most read stories. I assume this is reasonably representative so it does indicate that there is a still a very high level of public interest, hence the McCanns being able to keep getting their stories published.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 03/07/2007 12:29

EEEEEEEEEEEE--NNNNNNNNNNNNN-OOOOOOOOOOOO-UUUUUUUUUUUUUU---GGGGGGGGGGGGGG GGG------HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

wannaBe · 03/07/2007 12:30

I am going to get shot here, but I actually think the campaign is a bad idea and has been very ill advised.

I can absolutely understand why the Mccanns would want to get Madeleine?s picture out there, but I do think there?s such a thing as too much publicity.

There?s absolutely no way that anyone holding Madeleine would take her out in public where she might be spotted by a member of the public. Even the Portuguese police said that they thought the media coverage has hampered the investigation because of all the money grabbers crawling out of the woodwork hoping for a piece of the reward money. Just look at the hoax caller, the letter guy telling of Madeleine?s whereabouts and now this pair of child abusers who have been arrested for trying to extort money from the Mccanns. I?m sure there have been many more of them that we?ve not been told about.

But I do think that the latest terrorism fears will overtake this case now. It?s not being reported on the news any more and the coverage in the media is minimal. In time it will slide out of the news until there is a possible sighting or until this case is resolved.

slim22 · 03/07/2007 12:30

havn't you people had enough talking about this?
I understand the cathartic value, but this can be done privately.
The parents will probably be in mourning for the rest of their lives, and they will come and read these threads. Do you really think your opinions have any sort of healing value??????

Agree there are loads of more important issues in this sad world, so go ahead and use your time wisely instead of bitching about this.

binkleandflip · 03/07/2007 12:30

I agree that all the media leads to speculation such as this, so a good arguement to tone the media coverage down then?

Job done.
