Anyone else feel Madeline Mccann story overplayed?

Tragic for her family and others who loved her.
I would never blame her parents for efforts they made to keep this in public mind.
The story obviously touched a lot of hearts.
But does it deserve so MUCH attention? In playgroups, schools, cinema, supermarket and street-corner notices a thousand miles away from where she disappeared?

Not trying to get on Sky news, nor am I a heartless b*tch. But I do get upset that so much attention and energy has been devoted to this topic when much worse and more important things are happening in the world.

Even among us parents, surely we should put this in more proportion?

Am I the only one thank thinks like that?

Olihan, it was on the news this morning that MNers have complained about a cinema advert for Madeline being shown before a kids film. So your tone is rather unfair.

mummyoftwogirls · 22/08/2007 15:03

thankyou
i was quoting this mornings reports i read in papers and saw on internet and heard on news.
no there was no need to be so rude either.i hadnt noticed dates i looked up maddie on mumsnet search
nothing like not been made welcome to a new site eh!

Olihan · 22/08/2007 15:07

That's fine, Fido, but a) this isn't the thread that that story relates to, b) the incident in question was done to death on the relevant thread all that time ago c) if mummyoftwogirls wanted to comment on this morning's news item she should have started a new thread about it, not dragged up an old one that isn't relevant.

LazyLineLegilimens · 22/08/2007 15:10

Well, mummy (to two BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS), as long as you are disgusted, that's all that matters. I am sure that everyone here will be well and truly ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES now that you have given them WHAT FOR.

mummyoftwogirls · 22/08/2007 15:11

i am new on here and was fuming when heard on news about this,it wasnt meant personal to ANYONE,i was giving an opinion.i do use discussion forums but wasnt familiar with this one.i apolagise if i have UPSET someone......

How did you think you might be welcomed, by telling people they ought to be ashamed of themselves?

Some people on MN made a suggestion to the Odedon that they NOT show the ad looking for Madeleine before U rated films as some small children were being badly frightened by hearing of a child 'snatched' from her bed. This is a valid concern. No one wanted to prevent the McCanns from publicising the search for their daughter. But it is up tp parents how, when and if they tell small children that they might be at risk of being snatched from thir beds - not up to the Odeon, or the poor McCanns, to make that decision on behalf of other parents.

The Odeon agreed and restricted the advert to films for older people.

Olihan · 22/08/2007 15:51

mummytotwogirls, it would have been useful if you had looked for the actual thread that was at the centre of the news report today. The main point of it was NOT that Maddie's parents shouldn't be publicising her disappearance. As Netto says, it was partly that it was shown to audiences of predominantly young children and also that there was no warning before it was shown so a lot of parents were forced to answer questions from their children that they weren't prepared for.

So before you come on here, telling us to all be ashamed of ourselves and then being surprised people are rude to you, try to equip yourself with the full facts, rather than the obviously more newsworthy angle the media (that you seem so fond of) portray.

mummyoftwogirls · 22/08/2007 15:58

i did not come on here to argue.
yes i am fond of the media!i like to know the news!i read on this thread about ppl sayin they had enough of hearing about the abduction,i was stating that if our children were missing we would want them screened everywhere/anywhere.
sorry you had to go and read up on the media to check up on what had been said
as you stated earlier this thread is done with and should be left to lie.
sorry for upsetting you so much!
bye x

I firmly believe that nothing more than has already been done could be humanly done to raise the public's awareness regarding the disappearance of Madeline McCann.

The McCann's have had overwhelming support and help of every possible kind from the public and, I feel, couldn't have dreamed of or hoped for more. As tragic as it is, it has yelided nothing to date as far as discovering what has happened to this little girl.

I agree that the story is now becoming vastly overplayed and is often running into the realms of quite ridiculous speculation.

I feel that the media should back right off now and only begin to report on this story again when there is something substantive to report.

The BBC News website resports today:

"Last week, Mr McCann asked the media to end the constant speculation about his daughter's whereabouts.

He said there had been "huge amounts written with no substance" and that it was not necessary to "bombard people on a daily basis" with Madeleine's image.

So there you go, stright from the horse's mouth so to speak...

UCM · 01/09/2007 00:05

It is very likely that Madeliene MCcann is getting so much attention because her parents, are very intelligent and know how to use the net and have been advised on how to use the media.

I would do the same. I pity the next person whose child goes missing though, as I do not think they could hold up the same sort of media attention.

IF THIS IS NOT A GOOD ADVERTISMENT TO LOOK AFTER YOUR KIDS AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT OUT OF SIGHT.

I don't know what is.

Tortington · 01/09/2007 00:10

i'm only sorry your not the only person that thinks like that.

should it be my child i could only wish for this kind of ongoing publicity.

it was only only 4 months ago.

mummyfixit · 01/09/2007 18:32

Surely we as decent human beings would wish the McCann's our prayers and thoughts that they find their daughter safe and well and can then all travel home together as a family of five not a family of four.

What is wrong with people? Put yourselves n their shoes, surely you would want to get as many people as possible keeping an eye out. The McCanns have got it right. They are making sure the public are kept aware of developments and that people do not forget the fact that there is an innocent 4 year old missing, taken from her bed.

Perhaps we should all tonight give our prayers to Madeleine McCann and her family and hope that this nightmare will end for them all soon.

maisym · 02/09/2007 18:43

Why isn't it in the media to the same level that they left 3 kids home alone whilst they went out? The crime was that the child went missing but it could be said that their crime is leaving their children by themselves. If it happened in the uk would the kids be on the at risk register??

Reminds me of the Diana car crash - she wasn't wearing a seat belt and at the time and it was said that it could have saved her but now you never read this anymore. Another important safety message lost.

tazmosis · 02/09/2007 19:49

gosh maisym - you're not trying to wind us all up again are you....?

in response blah blah blah.

mummyfixit - with you all the way.

maisym · 02/09/2007 20:41

taz - no not winding you up (and I've never done this) - just my opinion on the topic.

paulaplumpbottom · 03/09/2007 20:18

I hope for Madeline AND HER FAMILY'S SAKE THAT THE STORY KEEPS GETTING "OVERPLAYED+ MAYBE THAT WILL LEAD TO SOMETHING

kentgirl73 · 03/09/2007 20:30

I would want to keep going for as long as possible, but looking at the mccanns they are at breaking point and what ever they decide to do people will still have an opinion on - i just hope the police are keeping quiet because they are closer to getting to where she is - as always thoughts with the mccanns during this nightmare
