The suspect bomb in London.... but this comment really annoyed me. It feels vaguely racist and yet I am not sure it is..

All options, including the Irish, are open at this stage," said the source.

the LAST thing I would react with, if my 5-year-old was in that situation, would be with hatred and racism towards an entire nation and everyone in it, or to hold each and every one of them personally responsible for the actions of a few.

BreeVanDerCamp · 29/06/2007 22:54

Upwind I wouldn't mind, but in the interests of balance I reported myself.

well I'm off for some Poitín

BreeVanDerCamp · 29/06/2007 22:55

The good news is, I am now the proud owner of a large dry white wine.

You drinkers!

GibbonInARibbon · 29/06/2007 22:59
Wink
Desiderata · 29/06/2007 23:00

ummm, just read through my posts to find out what I said that was offensive.

HappyDaddy .. don't think you are.

At what point in my posting did someone think it was acceptable to say that I condemned an entire nation?

It always seems to me that the most pro-PC amongst us are the most nasty.

BreeVanDerCamp · 29/06/2007 23:01

It has been deleted.

Huge thanks to MN towers.

Huge apologies for being so pushy, but it touched a nerve I did not know I had.

GibbonInARibbon · 29/06/2007 23:02

Maybe a few of us reporting did the trick.

Just glad it's gone.

GibbonInARibbon · 29/06/2007 23:03

Did the same to me Bree.

HappyDaddy · 29/06/2007 23:08

Desiderata, DC said that he hated the irish when "they" tried to bomb him when he was 5.

You asked Bree what she would do, then, if "they" had tried to bomb her child. Implying that DC was right to condemn ALL Irish.

That's why, no more no less.

No such thing as PC, just common sense and decency.

Desiderata · 29/06/2007 23:17

You are being simplistic.

'They' could mean anyone who had harmed your child.

JustineMumsnet · 29/06/2007 23:19

Hi all,
We've deleted DC's posts about the Irish because they were racist. We took a while to delete the second DC comment because it wasn't reported and no one was here actually watching the thread - there are times when that happens particulary during out of office hours - we just don't have the resources to watch 24/7. The reason Bree's post and the first DC post were deleted rapidly is because they were reported (Bree asked for her own post to be deleted) and I just happened to pop my head in in between putting the kids to bed and making dinner.

Anyway sorry for any distress but as a rule it's inadvisable to assume there's always someone on alert at MN Towers and therefore to read too much into it if it's a wee while before we take action.
Best,
MNHQ

Ok thanks Justine I like you all again

expatinscotland · 29/06/2007 23:21

Thanks, Justine.

SaintGeorge · 29/06/2007 23:22

Thanks for deleting Justine, although at the risk of contradicting you it was reported.

I know because I, for one, hit the button.

GibbonInARibbon · 29/06/2007 23:23

I reported it too.

Just glad it's now gone

BreeVanDerCamp · 29/06/2007 23:23

STG

Leave my new best friend alone please.

I am hoping she will share the chocolates......................

OP posts:
JustineMumsnet · 29/06/2007 23:23

Yes St G but it was reported later - ie after I'd gone to make dinner!

letstalkreligion · 29/06/2007 23:24

Can I just say jonathan ross has just made a blanket jokey disparaging comment about 'the irish' - I doubt this will be taken in a racist way or that anyone would pull him up on that so it's all about context I guess

SaintGeorge · 29/06/2007 23:25

Ah, gotcha Justine, sorry.

Although, Blue Moon tomorrow and all, maybe you should turn up the volume on that little 'ping' that goes off when we hit the red !

JustineMumsnet · 29/06/2007 23:27

Or go and bury my head in the sand?

SaintGeorge · 29/06/2007 23:28

Far better option

edam · 29/06/2007 23:38

So now that's all sorted out, anyone concerned about terrorism at all? Or does that not really matter in the scheme of things?
