I approve of this news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/6712981.stm

At our school girls wear skirts so short you can see their knickers when they are sitting down, or walking upstairs infront of you.

I think school uniform trousers are grimola

Ceolas · 02/06/2007 11:47

I have never seen a pair of school trousers for a girl that didn't look shiny and cheap.

Enid · 02/06/2007 11:48

who actually gives a shit if girls wear short skirts?

who actually cares if you can see their knickers?

I don't.

kittypants · 02/06/2007 11:48

!
at my primary school i was only girl allowed to wear trousers for a while,i hated my mum and dad for getting the head to let me!

hana · 02/06/2007 11:48

they used to have uniform police at the schools I worked at in Japan and a few days every year they would set up inspection stations quite a way from the school gates ( to get them unaware!) they would measure up from the knee

hana · 02/06/2007 11:49

the boys do and it's not great for lessons
ime

Enid · 02/06/2007 11:49

I used to roll mine ovre at the top as soon as I was out of sight of parents

clipped together with my pursebelt

I must have looked great

Enid · 02/06/2007 11:49

tell the boys to control themselves then

they are not animals

hana · 02/06/2007 11:50

omg!

hana · 02/06/2007 11:50

oh some of the boys I have taught are

Ceolas · 02/06/2007 11:50

I don't think many high school activities involve sitting on the floor anyway.

bananabump · 02/06/2007 12:25

In our school some girls used to do this, but short skirts weren't as fashionable back then.

The boys could be animals, they used to throw cups of water at our (white) shirts if they suspected a girl wasn't wearing a bra.

Mind you, we had a couple of science teachers who used to take full advantage of the fact that we sat on high stools in skirts. He was forever dropping his pen and diving to get it. Gross.

I think trousers are a good idea.

Yes trousers if they wish, but banning skirts?

fuzzywuzzy · 02/06/2007 12:29

This isn't the first school to ban skirts, another school did it a while back, teacher sited the reason being young girls rolling up their skirts and then joining in school activities was inappropriate.

At our skirt the girls who wore skirts had to endure random skirt length checks.....

Enid · 02/06/2007 15:59

I hope the girls wear skin tight trousers with no pants

honestly I think its a ridiculous rule.

NuttyMuffins · 02/06/2007 16:03

We weren't allowed to wear trousers either.

We had the length of our skirts inspected on the way in to lunch every day. I just used to nip into the toilet on the way, unroll the waistband and then back in and roll it up again on the way back to lessons

I have 2 dd's and think they should be given the choice of skirts or trousers.

scatterbrain · 02/06/2007 16:07

Ah in my day the teachers had more authority - we had a dragon called Mrs Shaw who was in charge of girls' uniform and Oh My God she was fierce !

She kept regulation skirts and other uniform in her cupboard and she used to inspect us as we went into assembly - anyone not conforming (and it was knee length none of this 3 inches above the knee business) was marched off to change into her spare uniform - very humiliating !!

Not many people tried it on a second time !

I want my dd to go to a school with a uniform dragon !

roisin · 02/06/2007 18:43

Enid, does it really no bother you? I don't know why but it really grates with me. Many of the girls look great in a short skirt, but the short! skirts they wear are simply indecent! And yes, I know I sound like my granny.

At our school SMT have strict policies on loads of aspects of uniform, and frequently have blitzes to attempt to enforce them; but skirts just don't seem an issue. I don't know why. They do bother about:
ties - done up properly
top buttons
collars
navy blue trousers not black
proper shoes (not trainers)
make-up - not allowed
earrings - 1 pr plain studs only - danglies and sparklies not allowed, no multiples
any other piercings - not allowed
necklaces - not allowed
bracelets - not allowed

When I was at school we were regularly inspected for

length of skirt
length of socks (not allowed over knee even if it was below zero, god knows why not)
appropriateness of uniform in general

and we weren't allowed trousers either, which I think was wrong.

I do think boys aren't animals and girls shouldn't have to tone down their dress to deal with boys behaviour, it all smacks of contributory negligence argument stuff to me.

roisin · 02/06/2007 18:58

My mum tells stories of having to 'kneel up' in assembly and the HT would come round with a ruler to measure skirt lengths: they had to be 1" above the knee - not longer or shorter .... goodness knows what happened if you had a sudden growth spurt.

That was a 'posh' school for not-very-bright-girlies-who'd-failed-the-11+ though: They mostly did deportment, cooking, sewing, and how to wear appropriate length skirts

DD2's school introduced a smart kilt about 3 years ago because there were no rules about the old black skirt and some looked no bigger than a belt.

For the first year the kilt looked really smart but now all the girls just roll the waistband over and the school doesn't really enforce the length rule.

The head refuses to let the girls wear trousers which I think is just as odd as banning skirts.

Blandmum · 02/06/2007 19:03

Oddly our 'gals can wear skirts if they wish, but hardly any of them do, they tend to all wear trousers. Which is a blessing, since I've seen what they wear on non uniform day, and it isn't classy!

Hard enough to get and keep the attention of 28 hormonaly inconvenienced teenagers, harder still if the girls all look like 'working girls'.

Otter · 02/06/2007 19:13

my daughter is about the only girl inher all girls to only wear skirts

those trouseres are the devils work

MaureenMLove · 02/06/2007 19:13

How silly! Surely it would have been easier to insist that all skirts were on or below the knee, rather than ban them all together.
