If you can do ONE thing to protect children

have a look here

If you want to do ONE thing to protect children (and it really will), buy only fair trade chocolate, or that on the 'good chocolate guide' here. This is a concrete thing you can do which WILL help protect children.

I don't want this to be another of 'those' threads, but it seems we all want to protect children and this is a really easy thing we can all do. Read the webpage, and have a think. It will make a difference to children!

I also thought all of G&B's was fairtrade. Can recommend Maya Gold and Divine milk chocolate as tasting gorgeous

twinsetandpearls · 12/05/2007 17:42

have to admit I thought all of green and blacks was fairtrade, maybe it changed when they were bought out.

edam · 12/05/2007 17:45

Thanks TS, had no idea. The original Cadburys and Frys must be turning in their graves, what with being Quakers and all that.

Flamesparrow · 12/05/2007 17:49

I wasn't so keen on Divine.

Fairtrade wine in my fridge if that counts

ChocolateFace · 12/05/2007 17:51

Good point edam!

munz · 12/05/2007 18:11

I never realised.

what is the fair trade tea/coffee as well? i'll deffo look out for th efair trade in tescos from now on

PeachyChocolateEClair · 12/05/2007 18:15

Yoopu can een get choc wafers (for lunchboxes) on Asda home delivery fairtrade, 99p for ten so hardly bank breaking (and they're yummy)

bnever2busy2bbeautiful (offshoot i think of Lush) has a cosmetics website where all the gift packaging is hand embtroidered by fairtrade groups as well, good for gifts I think.

doyouwantfrieswiththat · 12/05/2007 18:15

I thought Green & Blacks were being bought up by Cadbury's, not sure what their fair trade stance is now.

Flamesparrow · 12/05/2007 18:17

Percol coffee is fairtrade and its goooooooooooorgeous.

I am now stalking you Munz. When d'ya wanna meet up? I will drive to you and sit on your step

tortoiseSHELL · 12/05/2007 18:24

Lots of fairtrade stuff here

The chocolate thing was something I had never heard about until someone did a talk at church, and it does seem like something very easy to do.

Thanks for this thread. I read the other day about the unsustainability of the now so fashionable 70%+ cocoa chocolate but the article fell short of mentioning this.

I don't eat much chocolate these days but if I do, I will remember this.

Same reason I don't drink Minute Maid... although they had full families living in similar conditions to those abolished with slavery. And all that happening in the proud and free land of the United States in the middle of the 1980s! wonder if it is still going on...

There's a lot of slavery going on now 9there was athread not long ago) although most of it is in the guise of bondage slavery- people being enslaved by their indebtedness. It happens everywhere- Uk, france, America- texaco are mentioned in a book I have on modern day slavery, and so is the treatment of Christians in Pakistan. (I owe TooTicky the book on loan actually oops- will post to you TT totally forgot I ahd offered)

if you could sign the petitions on here I would be most grateful

Callisto · 12/05/2007 20:14

There is a list of Fairtrade chocolate on the site - its a pdf download. G&B Maya gold is the only G&B listed there but there are lots of other brands too. Thanks for this Tortoise.

layman · 12/05/2007 23:28

Thank you for this, TS! I buy fairtrade tea and coffee but not chocolate. I will now!

WideWebWitch · 13/05/2007 09:09

OK, I'm going to stop buying Green & Blacks until it's fairtrade.

Should we be writing to G&B to tell them so?

doyouwantfrieswiththat · 13/05/2007 09:33

ahem - don't forget bananas..I can now buy my bananas from LIDL since they're launching a fair trade range ..

winnie · 13/05/2007 09:39

Thanks for raising this tortoiseshell.

DimpledThighs · 13/05/2007 09:42

WWW - good idea - I will write too.

Trort - excellent threaad - thanks.

ruty · 13/05/2007 09:42

excellent thread tortoiseshell. Isn't is odd that buying fairtrade is still a customer choice rather than an absolute necessity.

doyouwantfrieswiththat · 13/05/2007 09:46

consumer pressure drives the market..ditto packaging

you might also want to think about food miles..why are supermarkets stocking potatoes from Israel when we can grow them here

puffling · 13/05/2007 09:47

Green and Blacks is owned by Cadburys

ruty · 13/05/2007 09:59

i was thinking the same about G&B www. Should we do a mumsnet petition? that might get some press...
