Tissy - I am sorry you feel so negatively about the prospect of independence, and have had such a negative experience with anti-english feeling, I do agree that independence is very unlikely.

I live in hope, that this government gets rid of trident, and the council tax and maybe lets the voters in Scotland decide, in a referendum, if they want independence for Scotland. that would be democracy

For a prosperous, successful nation we need not look any further than the republic of Ireland, why should we not be given the same chance??

The thing i am delighted about most of all is that the Labour party can never again take for granted the Scottish vote, for years they have had to do no work to get elected as people have just voted for them, that time has now gone.

Finona, was your bro over helping out during the election?? We had someone who worked for an MEP in Brussels helping us out, name began with G, lovely chap. Yeah was more than likely my Bro you have met, this is so funny, such a small world.

Sherlock, wouldnt dream of mentioning your posting name, some things go without saying your secrets are safe.

I have well and truly outed myself on this thread huh, oh well (sneaks of to change nickname)

"the Scots seem to hate the English more than any other ethnic group"

I'm a Scot and I class myself as Scottish, not British. That doesn't mean I hate the English - I've never met an English person I didn't like. I have friends and family (cousins) who are English. It's unfair to make such a sweeping generalisation; when I worked in a bank call centre a woman came on the line and said 'I don't want to to speak to a Scottish person' - does that mean that no English person wants to talk to me? I don't think so. If there is any bad feeling it's against the media and London/Westminster (my SIL moved to work in London a few years ago and one of the women she works beside said 'do you have shops in Scotland?' and another said 'but Scotland's just a part of England now isn't it?')

I'm delighted the SNP won tho' disappointed that 'my' party, the Greens, lost seats. I hope that we do have a referendum on independance 'cos I know how I'll be voting.

What's wrong with being proud to be Scottish, or English or Welsh?

There seems to be this really sad mentality that it's somehow bad or wrong or racist to be proud of your nationality and that you must somehow downplay it.

How silly!

People can't help where they're born. Why not be proud of that?

expatinscotland · 08/05/2007 09:57

My husband is a Scotsman and he also considers himself Scottish, not British.

I'm the parent of two children who are Scottish.

That doesn't mean anti-English at all.

ScottishMummy · 08/05/2007 10:14

scottish and proud of it, nuff said

wheres my jimmy wig

Finona · 08/05/2007 15:28

Louii - my bro has been back, but in the north east. Your mum will know him though - his name begins with L, from Aberdeen!!!

I hope that the coalition with the Greens goes ahead. Isn't it ironic that the 2 parties from either side of the debate in Northern Ireland can come together to power-share, yet the liberal 'democrats' won't consider a coalition because we want to seek the view of the Scottish electorate via a referendum

Well, my daughters have an American mother, but I wouldn't call them Ameriscots.

They've never set foot in America and even when they do, it will be for holidays.

They talk like Scottish people, they think like them, act like them, eat like them.

I mean, what else are they going to be?

I just fail to see where that's not something to take pride in.

It's a shame it's seen as anythign else, and that goes for English folks as well.
