Story here

OP posts:
tissy · 06/05/2007 17:22

well, I'm an English woman living in Scotland, and I'm gutted that I only really had a choice between Labour and SNP. I did vote Green in the regional election, Labour in the Constituency (there wasn't a Green candidate and I like the SNP less than our dreadful Labour woman) and the choice for the local council was Labour or SNP- so I didn't vote in that one at all.

I thought that PR would mean the smaller parties have a chance, but it's not really true in this area, when they don't presumably have enough money to be able to afford to field a candidate. Not even a LibDem candidate for the council .

If we get independence up here, I'm off...

I'm BRITISH and in this area, the Scots seem to hate the English more than any other ethnic group.

Devonshire · 06/05/2007 17:26

whereabouts are you tissy?

tissy · 06/05/2007 17:28

East Ayrshire

rabbleraiser · 06/05/2007 17:39

Agree with Tissy on the racial hatred of the English. I've encountered in in large doses whenever and wherever I've been in Scotland. As a foreigner on Scottish soil, I've always bitten my lip ... but it really annoys me when Scots living in England behave like that.

I wholeheartedly endorse full independence for Scotland. By that, I don't mean some half-hearted fudge whereby the English still continue to fund the Scottish parliament disproportionately. If you want it, that's great. But Scotland must pay for it.

It would also solve the patently unfair 'West Lothian Question'.

I'm off to work now, so no hard hat required!!!

Devonshire · 06/05/2007 18:15

gosh, i'm really surprised, i've had no anti-englishness at all since moving to stirlingshire 7 yrs ago.

toomuchtodo · 06/05/2007 18:17

I'm scottish and I certainly don't hate the English people............

now the English MEDIA - can't stand a lot of them

bobsmum · 06/05/2007 18:24

My dh is English and he's never had any anti sentiment thrown in his direction.

Not convinced by the whole SNP win - still wonder whether they're a one trick pony.

Incidentally as a Scottish woman living in the SE England for 5 years I got a tirade of anti Scottish feeling and abusive comments. It really wore me down and I was very grateful to get either to the north of England, Wales or Scotland where it just didn't happen.

I did however learn that what I had thought was anti English feeling in some parts of Scotland is probably better described as anti Westminster or possibly anti London. It does seem like an entirely different country and culture to the rest of the UK down there. But then I've only lived in the SE for 8 years in total - maybe that's not enough?

Aefondkiss · 06/05/2007 18:39

"the Scots seem to hate the English more than any other ethnic group" - this is a very sweeping statement, I do think there is a certain degree of anti-english feeling, but I think it is similar to rangers supporters "hating" celtic, it does exist and I think certain people are bigotted, narrow minded, racist, homophobic, these are the same people who resent any minority groups ....

how does it relate to the op?

bobsmum I do feel particular resentment of westminster, and the british government, that is why I hope one day we will get independence, to govern ourselves as opposed to having government being imposed on us - the Iraq war is a major reason why I dislike westminster rule.

I don't mind if snp are a one trick party, if we get independence, I think there will be more chance for the smaller parties

ScottishMummy · 06/05/2007 18:58

imo, it is a stereotypical generalisation to suggest scots hate english, in reality some numnuts are nasty, mean and stereotypical to the english but this is reprehensible and not a national characteristic

i obviously an scottish living and working in London and love london

my bubba was born here 100% North London

suzycreamcheese · 06/05/2007 23:21

it works both ways..many happy english people living in scotland and vice versa..
i've lived in london as long as i lived in scotland this year!

i do agree it is more the english / london centric media that gets right up scottish noses...

..ffs we never heard a scottish accent on the bbc when i was growing up (70's)..you did feel ignored and alien to england...

i dont mind all this scots/english stuff as banter, but i have been on the aggressive end of stuff as well as the 'i'll hug you you're scottish brigade'... I know which is more scary ....

louii · 06/05/2007 23:48

Sherlock, would his name begin with J???

louii · 06/05/2007 23:50

If so, he worked for my mum who had a very very good result as well

SherlockLGJ · 07/05/2007 07:30

I wish you would stop coming on here, when I am in my bed.

So your Mum is T, she did really well.

Yes it is J, I have known him for ever, or it feels like that I have. Just worked it out, 23 years so not forever but quite a long time.

JARM · 07/05/2007 07:59

Im just wondering where and when I can apply for my scottish passport

LieselVentouse · 07/05/2007 08:42
Grin
Aefondkiss · 07/05/2007 08:49

but are the Lib dems really going to refuse to form a coalition?... such a parcel o rogues in a nation

tissy · 07/05/2007 09:24

Aefondkiss, "how does it relate to the op?"

One of the things I like about MN is how threads can move in directions away from the op- are you saying that I shouldn't post because you deem me off topic?

As for the question...well, SNP are Scotland's largest party (just). Their stated aim is Independence, and I am a Briton who currently lives in Britain. If they get Independence (which admittedly looks unlikely at the moment), I will be a foreigner.

I really cannot understand the desire to break up an already small nation into smaller parts. I can't see that anyone will gain from it.

SoapOnARope · 07/05/2007 09:24

LibDems HAVE refused to form coalition

tissy · 07/05/2007 09:28

Thank heavens for small mercies!

louii · 07/05/2007 16:43

LOL sherlock, small world huh! Where u from?

Great results in the whole constituency so we are all over the moon.

Going to see mum being sworn in at Parly on Wednesday. Great excuse for getting dressed up.

SherlockLGJ · 07/05/2007 16:46

I am from Dublin, J and I lived about a mile from each other.

Is J going to the swearing in ceremony as well.

I would say give him a huge hug from me and tell him I am proud of him. But he would look at you and say LGJ who ??

SherlockLGJ · 07/05/2007 16:47

I knew him when he had enough hair for a pony tail.

louii · 07/05/2007 16:54

Dont think he is going, MSP's only get allocated two tickets each so me and my bro going.
A ponytail on JB, LOL

Would be rather cryptic alright, well J i was "talking" to a friend of yours, well sort of, I dont know her name, what she looks like etc but she say hi, pmsl.

SherlockLGJ · 07/05/2007 17:32

Tell him you are on the same internet forum as someone who used to go out with an eejit from Bohernabreena and that my name does not start with V. Tell him I live in Surrey.

That should do it. DO not tell him my posting name.

Ohhh the tales I could tell, but he is all grown up and respectable now, so I will keep my counsel.

Finona · 07/05/2007 20:58

I too think it is a fantastic result, and one which I've worked hard for, for longer than I care to remember Really pleased that I now have an SNP MP and MSP, and thanks to PR, an SNP councillor and MEP.

Sorry, Tissy, but we're not an 'already small nation' - the UK is a number of small nations, and all we want is for Scotland to be treated like a normal country with the same rights and opportunities as other small sovereign states in Europe and across the world.

Louii - hope you have a great day on Wednesday. Well done to your mum!!! I think I met your bro at conference a few years ago - my bro used to work at the parly, and now works in Brussels for the party.
