Not aware that HE does anymore than read the news

He does a lot more than that.

Edwards is the lead presenter for the News at Ten. He presents it four days a week whilst Bruce presents it on Fridays. She is one of the presenters who stands in when Edwards is not available and is also a relief presenter for the Six O'clock News. Since Edwards became the main presenter News at Ten has become the most watched news programme in the UK.

Edwards also presents News at Five on the BBC News channel and presents state and international events (e.g. the Festival of Remembrance, State Opening of Parliament and Trooping of the Colour). He was also one of the lead presenters for the EU Referendum which I think is in the period covered by these figures.

Given how much Edwards does and the relative status of the shows in which they are involved, it is not obvious that the comparison between Edwards and Bruce shows a blatant gender pay gap. It may show that there are more opportunities for male presenters but even that is not clear. It may be that Fiona Bruce doesn't want additional work.

The Times legal reporters have canvassed a number of employment lawyers who state that cutting the salaries of the men is fraught with difficulties. They can negotiate with them, but not cut arbitrarily. The usual procedure where salaries are not equal is to raise the salaries of the women. Whatever they do, they need robust job evaluation procedures and not just paying because they like someone and feel they are worth a certain salary. It has to be justified.

I didn't see Sue Perkins on the list. I still think the comparison beteeen Gary Lineker and Clare Balding is worth a punt for her! I have seen lawyers say the same thing.

Presumably all of the female talent have agents just like the males.

The BBC presumably should hire people at the lowest rate it can. If the females agents settle for less whose fault is that?

I admid,
£175 k a year to get up at ferk all o clock in the morning to be on Radio 4 several times a week
they earn it
Humphries gets more because he does Mastermind
but Vine and Evans .......

and the "dimbleby is through a company" shit

this BBC story has brought out into he open how much of the world works

ladies
kick em in the balls and grab their pay

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/07/2017 20:11

Ta1kinPeece

Not sure about Vines but Evans (who I don't particularly care for) fronts a lot of the charity work and uses his own cars for the bid road trip thing that he does.

As has been said without knowing all the details of each contract it is hard to say what the differences are.

TittyGolightly · 23/07/2017 20:28

Evans raises a lot more than £2m for charity.

Norway has been publishing salaries and tax paid for years.

Apparently Janet Street Porter was involved in contracts, her view is worth a read.

Highly relevant in case anyone didn't see this:

I want to see all their expenses claims. We can search MP expenses claims, why not other publicly paid people like BBC people?

LadyinCement · 25/07/2017 17:48

Surely it would make more sense to publish an hourly rate? Not every presenter is sitting in the BBC 9-5 so it's difficult to compare like with like. Some people do several shows etc so obviously another person who does a once a week seasonal thing is going to earn less. Duh.

LadyinCement · 25/07/2017 17:51

Excellent Janet Street Porter article.

Can I mention - totally off topic - that I picked up her first autobiography for 20p in a charity shop and it was one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. Funny, insightful, well written. Five stars.

RainbowBriteRules · 25/07/2017 17:52

I don't care either.
