I don't get the justification of the salaries on the basis that the bbc need to attract the biggest and the best stars or they will go elsewhere. Would jeremy vine really be such a major loss? I dont personally like many of those on the highest salaries eg Chris Evans. Gary lineker could go to any channel. I think the level of talent and skill amongst these top stars is debatable. Surely they are all replaceable.

seasonschooner · 20/07/2017 07:39

Jeremy vine is a snake. Grin It makes his topical debate slot a bit of a joke now doesn't it?

I wonder what the gender/ethnicity profile of all the newspapers is?

The Guardian for example (if you google Guardian journalists) has 17 men and 5 women.

SingaSong12 · 20/07/2017 08:28

I personally get very good value from the licence fee but I suppose there are people who don't. I'd be surprised if there are lots and lots of people who don't use more than a few hours a year or BBC tv or radio or catch-up.
I mind the pay gap. Also note that there aren't many people from different ethnic minorities in the list. However I'm sure most of these people because they are the most famous and tgeyvor their programmes attract viewers could get the same or more on commercial tv.

Interesting listening to the news and BBC saying that rather than raise the pay of the women they might try to lower the men's. I wouldn't be surprised if they get taken to employment tribunal (or settle cases) for discrimination before that.

It would be interesting to know whether the jobs much lower down the scale also show gender/sex/race differences in pay for things like camera operators, floor managers or make-up people. Levelling any pay would probably make a bigger difference to those people.

prh47bridge · 20/07/2017 08:56

Who released the bbc figures and why

The BBC did because the government wrote the requirement into the BBC's charter when it was renewed.

You can see the problem more clearly when you compare like for like. The Today program presenters for example, or news anchors

The problem is that people forget about the other work some of these people. Some of the press this morning are running a story that Emily Maitlis is unhappy with her pay being below Evan Davies, forgetting that he presents Dragons Den on television and The Bottom Line on radio, and also that he is regarded as the lead presenter on Newsnight, replacing Jeremy Paxman. Note, by the way, that I have no evidence that Maitlis is forgetting these things. The story may be entirely an invention of the press.

SellFridges · 20/07/2017 11:53

I do agree that additional work is being ignored. But I guess the question then is why are more men being given those opportunities than women.

BubblesBuddy · 20/07/2017 12:53

I think the problem for Emily Maitliss is that was not even on the list!

There are clearly differentials at work here regarding seniority and "lead" presenters, but one of the issues I have difficulty with is the BBC (James Purnell - ex Labour politician) last night saying that different people have a bigger audience profile than others when they are doing exactly the same job. I cannot see that when you compare Stephen Nolan with any woman breakfast/daytime Radio 5 presenter. He is in NI, but not with a big audience, and presents from 10.00 pm ish on radio 5 3 or 4 nights a week. So how can that be argued? Woud many people notice if he disappeared?

I think there is an arguement for people earning more when all their work is taken into account but it is a shame this was not analysed. Is this why Claudia Winkelman, as the sidekick, gets more than Tess Daly? Tess has been on the live show for way longer and one would have assumed she had seniority, but no. However some people like Vine and Humphreys are not worth what they get and we could live without them. Humphreys should retire anyway at 73 and let someone in that is younger.

An agent said the womenneed better agents! Claire Balding certainly does - way below sexist Inverdale.

bemusedbewildered · 20/07/2017 15:33

How do we know Claire balding doesn't earn a lot from production companies? Is she complaining herself? I don't think they're overpaid, it's sad that the bbc talent gets slated when they can get more elsewhere.

Look at what happened to Jeremy clarkson and Amazon...

bemusedbewildered · 20/07/2017 15:37

the today is an icon around the world - they're all worth every penny. I await better information - it looks very much as though the 'list' is more confusing than revealing as insufficient information about why those salaries are justified on a case by case basis is included. Simple enough to do.

LesbianDonkeyOil · 20/07/2017 15:41

who cares?????

The people who were on the published list and have just discovered that someone else is being paid more that them, I expect Grin

FridgeCut · 20/07/2017 15:57

I want to see an hour breakdown, would be much better than these annual numbers.

slug · 20/07/2017 16:43

.

pay of bbc - who cares
BubblesBuddy · 20/07/2017 17:52

Obviously it is not just about hours worked. Seniority comes into it and Claudia W does do the film programme. Dan Walker does tow programmes so they do need a better breakdown of what they do coupled with seniority. Claire Balding may get other money but on the face of it, she seems low down considering she is on the TV and radio very regularly and is extremely well known for a variety of programmes. Other money wasn't included on the list! For anyone.

Timefortea99 · 20/07/2017 18:02

The easy comparator is Fiona Bruce and Huw Edwards. Both newsreaders but FB does Antiques Roadshow and another show on BBC1 on art (fake or not). Not aware that HE does anymore than read the news. However HE gets £550,000-599,999, FB gets £200,000 less. That is shocking and a blatant gender pay gap.

Zampa · 20/07/2017 18:14

Match of the Day garners 5 million viewers. On a salary of £1.8 million, each MOTD viewer is paying Gary Linekar 36p. That sounds like decent value to me.

Yes, the BBC needs to address the gender pay gap but that's a problem within society as a whole, not solely at the Beeb.

BoneyBackJefferson · 20/07/2017 18:14

Timefortea99

The issue is that you are "not aware" so you can't make the comparison.

A quick google shows what he has done. (although you can't tell how recently)

Timefortea99 · 20/07/2017 18:26

The search I did for Huw seems to show a catalogue of work that is regional (about Wales or for Welsh TV). Fiona is on AR - prinetime Sunday evening (and there are a lot of episodes per year) and the other show she does is also in the same time slot. So obviously the BBC think she is prime time but regional Huw (with not as many viewers) gets the much bigger pay check.

I would like to know what agents represent the same people - are all the higher paid people represented by the same shit hot agent.

BoneyBackJefferson · 20/07/2017 18:32

His work may be regional but is it part of bbc wales?
is it part of his main bbc contract?
Is it two separate contracts?
Is it more than two?
is the money that he has been paid one contract, or all of his contracts?

We don't know as the information hasn't been broken down in to any sort of detail.

There are so many unanswered questions about the information given.

FridgeCut · 20/07/2017 19:48

More critical thinking on this thread than in most of the journalism I've read on the matter.

bemusedbewildered · 20/07/2017 19:52

I can't for the life of me understand why the BBC didn't contextualise the list with an accompanying press release.

lljkk · 20/07/2017 20:26

There's no hourly rate... Steve Nolan works all hours available.
John Humphries has massively cut back hours but has more money than many.
Jane Garvey is not on list but she is not close to working FT.

I wish they didn't pay John McEnroe anything. I'd pay money not to hear his whiny mutterings.

EmpressoftheMundane · 20/07/2017 20:45

I care.

I don't want my licence fee (a tax) used to perpetuate blatant unfairness and inequality.

Ironic that this is the case in the BBC which is supposed to be a bunch of leftist luvvies. Meanwhile, it's the mean old Tories who have produced two female prime ministers who have shown a light on it.

I'd like all publicly owned corporations and charities should have to do the same.

lljkk · 20/07/2017 21:18

I'd quite like all private corporations to do the same! Let's go Swedish & all publish our tax returns.
