I remember reading that the BBC were trying to find things for Graham Norton to do.

I am shocked at Jeremy Vine's comment on the news just now, looking all forlorn, 'the BBC is hurting today' Confused

Differentname45 · 19/07/2017 19:06

Honestly the whole thing annoyed me. NOT how much they're paid, but the fact that it was published and made a huge thing out of. So the "free market is king" Tories want to shame presenters for making a lot of money...? Talk about irony.

Do find the gender pay gap frustrating, though. Especially since the BBC is better than the majority of employers. Shows how bad the rest must be.

TittyGolightly · 19/07/2017 19:06

imagine if you were paid less than the person standing next to you

This is actually a completely normal situation.

onlyhumanafterall · 19/07/2017 19:10

Chris Evans resigned from top gear after the ratings plummeted

bemusedbewildered · 19/07/2017 19:11

Yes look, of the people in our team, 5 of us have the same job - we're all paid different amounts relating to how much experience we've got, what we wed on when we came into the job, and our annual reviews on how well we've done.

You'd need a detailed analysis, on a programme by programme basis for salary differentials to conclude anything.

ScarletSienna · 19/07/2017 19:14

I care. Mostly about the gap between what men and women get paid. For example, Matt Baker (One Show presenter) gets paid £50,000 more than Alex Jones, the gap between the top earning female and top earning male is huge and there are only 2 females out of the top 14 earners.

wtffgs · 19/07/2017 19:17

Chris Evans is a loud mouthed yob whom I loathe.

I don't understand why the world men are paid so much less Hmm

bemusedbewildered · 19/07/2017 19:21

I loathe Evans too but he got that salary based on doing top gear which earns multi millions without him. His male co-stars don't earn what he earns as he's the headliner.

Personally I'm affronted that the female presenters are whinging about bias with hashtags on twitter - if you think you're underpaid, get out there and negotiate better for yourself.

ParadiseCity · 19/07/2017 19:21

Wouldn't it be great if we could chose who to pay our licence fee for? I would spend mine on Naga Munchetty and Doctor Who. I would also allocate some for Have I Got News For You and Death In Paradise but only on condition they became feminist.

SellFridges · 19/07/2017 19:25

The big story is the gender pay gap. That's disgraceful.

Of course high profile, skilled (and often very well qualified) workers are paid according to market forces. I'm not sure what people were expecting really?

For some of the people further down the list, Scott Mills for example, you can work the maths out and it doesn't seem so crazy. He presents a three hour show, five days a week for 48 weeks of the year. So his £200k breaks down to about £250 an hour (assuming you pay him for his holidays!). For a broadcaster playing to millions of people I'm not sure that's beyond expectations. He also does things like Eurovision so if that's also included the rate becomes even more reasonable.

I am cross that his female colleagues Clara Amfo and Annie Mac are not also on similar money.

SellFridges · 19/07/2017 19:27

Matt Baker is also a commentator for several sports. I suspect that's where his extra comes in. You can spot that kind of thing on a few male/female duos, the question should be why aren't the women getting similar additional opportunities.

paulapantsdown · 19/07/2017 19:45

It costs me about 50p a day so I'm cool with it.

DesperatelySeekingSushi · 19/07/2017 19:56

Meh. Claudia gets more as she does sewing bee too, as well as her radio show (very good, I discovered Bats for Lashes' Daniel through her) and taking over from Jonathan Ross on Film whateverit'scallednow 2017?)
I was Confused at Jeremy Vine but then realized he also does Eggheads as well as being on 5x a week.

Differentname45 · 19/07/2017 19:58

Also wanted to add (despite the gender pay gap frustration) - I love the BBC and am proud we have it. Happy to pay the licence fee.

cdtaylornats · 19/07/2017 21:37

An interesting precedent though - lets see the salaries our MPs are paying their assistants.

Delancy · 19/07/2017 22:35

The Beeb needs a rocket up its arse to sort out this disparity in pay for white males and then everyone else.

It makes me disgusted to see so many of them and then earning so much more.

Yes, I frigging care. It needs sorting, and is really not that hard to do. No excuse.

ScarletSienna · 19/07/2017 23:14

Sellfridges-Alex Jones does Shop Well For Less as well as the one show.

Far fewer opportunities it seems for women to be pundits or commentators which is where a lot of money seems to be!

cdtaylornats · 19/07/2017 23:26

Scrapping the license fee would mean the BBC hoovering up advertising money and ITV would suffer. Without its share of the license money Ch4 might not be viable. S4C and BBC Alba would probably be dumped. Funding of the World Service would go back to the government. Radio stations would be commercial driven.

I suspect local radio stations would be gone as well, or there would only be BBC ones as they absorbed all the local advertising cash.

No more Top Gear - can't upset the advertisers. Probably no more consumer rights programs.

prh47bridge · 20/07/2017 00:40

Alex Jones does Shop Well For Less as well as the one show

Indeed but that has relatively short runs. Matt Baker is on Countryfile which is on every Sunday, plus he does other work commentating on gymnastics.

lets see the salaries our MPs are paying their assistants

No problem. The pay scales are here.

bakedbeansandtuna · 20/07/2017 06:45

I'm wondering why any of them get paid the amount they do. How do they justify it? The mind boggles.

NormaSmuff · 20/07/2017 06:48

Who released the bbc figures and why?

OP posts:
BoneyBackJefferson · 20/07/2017 06:54

The list doesn't say exactly how much each of them do.

SellFridges · 20/07/2017 07:01

Exactly. The list doesn't say what they do for their money. It also excludes payments made via production companies.

For example, Mel Giedroyc (sp?) has made it on there without her Great British Bake Off work. You'd have to assume that with that she would be challenging CW for female top spot. Likewise Graham Norton's total does not include payments made for the Graham Norton show.

You can see the problem more clearly when you compare like for like. The Today program presenters for example, or news anchors.

The BBC will have to publish it's holistic gender pay gap in the next 6-8 months anyway, as will all companies with more than 200 employees (I think that's the number). It's fascinating and depressing all at once.

Bluntness100 · 20/07/2017 07:02

I care to be fair. I don't care about individuals pay, but I'd like to see average female pay versus average male pay for all their employees.

We pay for the BBC and right now it looks like there is a massive gender bias going on and discrimination against women. And that's not ok.

So let's see the average numbers as that will tell us more.

SellFridges · 20/07/2017 07:04

And Norma it's justified by market forces. The salaries in other countries, and on other channels in this country are much higher.
