Issues raised by the CG case 11

Venusflytwat · 17/07/2017 18:30

This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Lastly, here are some hopefully useful reference points of facts surrounding the case.

There are posts arguing that GOSH are likely to have lied about how much morphine they are giving Charlie... 😡

taratill · 18/07/2017 11:29

Wow likening GOSH to final solution is just sick. Disgusting on all levels.

Writerwannabe83 · 18/07/2017 11:31

I've just read on CA that if Charlie is euthanised it opens up the door for all people with conditions that require medication but can't be cured to be murdered with his example being someone with diabetes Hmm

It's just madness

Trampire · 18/07/2017 11:35

Taratill, there's been lots of those types of post from CA. GOSH have likened to Auschwitz numerous times.

Maryz that's bonkers about the refusal of a heel prick test! It's arrogant in the extreme. Why on earth would you refuse something that could potentially diagnose and help your child? Do people generally think that drs and scientists are out to kill them and that's their sole purpose? Wow. How did it come to this?

taratill · 18/07/2017 11:37

I haven't seen that Trampire . I really really despair of people sometimes.

It's just horrendous it really is that our most esteemed children's hospital can be considered that way.

redshoeblueshoe · 18/07/2017 11:38

ceto - I thought it was more than about UKIP man, CY had to state she would keep silent at the meeting, so for her spokesman to come out with such an inflammatory remark, after the judge allowed to let her attend the meeting seems rather disingenuous

Angry

Sheer pig ignorance and it makes me livid that there are adults stupid enough to casually compare this to the Third Reich. They didn't go in much for seven months intensive care, round the clock nursing, mediation with parents, ensuring full legal representation and support for parents and applying for ethics hearings. I won't distress people here by reminding of what they did do to millions of children who were perfectly healthy, never mind the sick and disabled.

They also have no concept of what euthanasia means and why moving from aggressively keeping a dying person alive to palliative care is different, no interest in learning the difference, and just want to use this over exaggerated, over emotive, wholly disproportionately intense and aggressive language to throw their feelings around like young teenagers having a strop.

I really think if at any time C&C do change their minds and choose palliative care they won't have any problem with CA at all, there's no logic or integrity to what's happening. There'll be an instant weathercock swing around to sympathy and support for that decision.

Trampire · 18/07/2017 11:46

It is horrendous Taratill. I've never been so incensed by a media story. Charlies case is a tragedy in itself and I have no idea how it will end. I trust the judge to make the right decision. For me, I feel this a social media nightmare. I lurk on CA. I've screenshot lots of threats and insults. I've reported much (with little effect). I've donated real money to GOSH, but I feel now somehow CA see GOSH as Goverment or they horrible nonsense word 'The Etablishmenf' and just want to see it brought down. An extra tragedy. They couldn't have chosen a least deserving place :(

Trampire · 18/07/2017 11:47

*Government

Trampire · 18/07/2017 11:49

*that horrible nonsense word 'The Establishment',

Sorry for typos. Walking the dog at the same time!

taratill · 18/07/2017 11:53

gosh I'm impressed you are walking the dog whilst reading / typing!

It's a bloody disgrace. The problem is they don't want to see this from anything other than their anti establishment ideology. It doesn't suit their purpose to.

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 18/07/2017 11:56

Trampire that's stunning multi tasking! Shock

GabsAlot · 18/07/2017 11:56

IM DISGUSTD

sorry but i lost family in at auschwitz i feel sick

goodbyestranger · 18/07/2017 11:58

Lots of things are badly thought out on the parents' side redshoeblueshoe. We saw that when, as soon as the judge had said the mum could attend the clinical meeting, the parents immediately objected to something else (the chair). That clearly irritated the judge quite a lot. The UKIP guy's statement was mad, in terms of content and timing, but I think the parents have simply lost the plot. In court it was said very emphatically that the US doctor had to leave the UK no later than this afternoon, so the meeting must be nearly concluded and that will be the decider, surely? I find it hard to believe we won't get a steer from the press or on social media about what direction it took.

Sostenueto · 18/07/2017 12:04

Look folks stop reading CAs posts it just upsets you all. (Sad for all)

Trampire · 18/07/2017 12:04

I reported an GOSH = Auschwitz comment to Facebook. Their reply?

"It's doesn't violate their community rules" (or something). Wtf? I've tweeted it a few times (screenshots). I'm hoping it'll get noted somewhere, by someone.

I read earlier on CA someone say

"It's just written words. We can say whatever we like"

Oh dear. As soon as more people get prosecuted from vile, idiotic posts on SM the better. It needs to sink in with lots of people that NO, you can't say whatever the fuck you want!

taratill · 18/07/2017 12:06

Jux it's dreadful but that's what came to my mind as well.

Trampire · 18/07/2017 12:06

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 18/07/2017 12:13

It's just a congregating place for anti-establishment, freeman of the land, "sick of experts" bollocks. Angry
