What's happening at the palace?

Reports that all royal staff have been called to an emergency meeting and an announcement expected at around 8am UK time.

Queen is abdicating maybe or maybe not

There was something very similar a few months back. Half of Mumsnet was glued to the 8 o'clock news - only for it to be an internet hoax - I'm hoping it's the same this time.

It's probably going to be nothing.

A good morning Britain reporter (Richard Gaisford) has just tweeted pics of the media outside so something's up.

Engagement announcements are not given to the quality whole staff in advance.

It's probably very prosaic - gathering all the staff made me wonder if they're going to have significant redundancies within the Royal household.

I call fake news. Seems to be doing the rounds in Oz and NZ but not so much in UK.

farmers if I recall correctly the last time this was all over the place it talked about big announcements being made around 27 Dec I think. This was when the New Years honours were announced. So a royal announcement just not what the internet was expecting.

It's not the queen putting her foot down re brexit.

FFS the Queen's not going to abdicate. She made a vow at her coronation that she would serve till her death and she's always been very clear that she's going to keep it. Some countries have a tradition of older monarchs abdicating so their heirs can take over but no British monarch has ever abdicated for reasons of old age or infirmity and she's not going to be the first.

I do think it is interesting how the royal family think they will be able to control this story in the new news cycle / with social media. If a staff meeting gets this much attention...

I read that the meeting was called at 3am. That would be pretty serious.

Snapespeare thats interesting because I saw pics of media outside the palace on twitter. I think they must be old photos rehashed to cause a stir then.

BBC said there will be an announcement, referenced the meeting and said nothing to worry about

The royal standard doesn't get flown at half mast because there is always a monarch. The king is dead long live the king...
It's other government offices and other flags that would be half masting.

Some news person on twitter said we can't tell anything from the flag as the royal standard is never flown at half mast.
