Whilst I'm not surprised (there have been rumours about his extra marital behaviour for a while) I do feel for his family. Waking up to conclusive proof that he not only had sex but unprotected sex is beyond awful. He's an complete w*er.

"The arrogance and sheer hypocrisy of some of those in public office never fails to astonish me."

Franke - yes I agree. Maybe knowing the consequences if they get caught adds to the thrill.

franke · 04/09/2016 12:19

Yes, the thrill or maybe something like a god complex, Dapplegrey. They seem to truly believe they are infallible. The size of ego or self belief required to be a politician is beyond my own comprehension, but the sense of entitlement that seems to often go alongside is shocking.

eurochick · 04/09/2016 12:20

It was all over the bbcbreakfast news.

hackmum · 04/09/2016 13:51

"This story is left field and of course Vaz is media lovvee especially with the Guardian, they just don't know how to spin it."

I just want to point out that this is nonsense. The reason other outlets will have been a bit slow to pick this up is because they don't want to risk a libel action and therefore prefer to wait for the facts to be confirmed. Once Vaz resigned, they were free to report it: www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/sep/04/keith-vaz-to-step-down-commons-committee-chair-sunday-mirror-sex-claims

Vaz really isn't a media luvvie if by that you mean he is well-liked by the media - quite the opposite. I think he has made plenty of enemies.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/09/2016 15:15

Keith Vaz ... was suspended for one month in 2002 for suspect financial dealings and false allegations against a policewoman

So glad I'm not alone in remembering that. Call me a cynic, but I've every expectation that after a "suitable pause" he'll pop up again in another role or safe seat Hmm

Dozer · 04/09/2016 15:19

If other stuff emerges that could make him vulnerable to blackmail, for example, it's really not great that he has been a long serving chair of Parliaments Home Affairs Committee, which deals with security and other vital matters.

BakewellTartAgain · 04/09/2016 16:11

I shout at parliament tv when he pops up as Chair of Home Affairs Committee - he has been able to make umpteen comebacks. Why?

AyeAmarok · 04/09/2016 16:22

I also don't understand why so many men (and women, but mostly men) in high positions jeopardise everything like this.

I mean, it's really not difficult to not end up in these sort of situations. If you were high profile, especially in politics where no matter what there will always be people in the media against you (even if it's just politically), then why on earth would you think you could get away with something like this and it wouldn't end up front page news?

Is it arrogance?

parrots · 04/09/2016 16:25

According to Guido Fawkes, there are far worse revelations to come

order-order.com/2016/09/04/244563/#disqus_thread

Why would anyone pursue such a public life with so many skeletons in the closet?

HateSummer · 04/09/2016 16:29

Dear me. I don't really care what people do in their private life, but to cheat on your wife and not use protection? What an arse. I feel sorry for his wife and children.

Thanks for the link parrots

frenchielala · 04/09/2016 16:35

He is a truly vile man. I've had the displeasure of working with him before. It just shows that often what goes around comes around.

mathsmum314 · 04/09/2016 17:14

He is blaming the newspapers for this 'sting' rather than just crawling under a rock where he should be.

"I'm Jim, spelt J-I-M, and I sell big washing machines!" lol

hackmum · 04/09/2016 17:58

I've always disliked Keith Vaz since the Salman Rushdie affair, when he took the side of Rushdie's extremist Muslim critics purely for reasons of political expediency. I do feel a bit sorry for him now because I think the media investigation is going to be vicious once it gets going in earnest.

HermioneWeasley · 04/09/2016 18:02

His poor family. What a selfish, hypocritical spunk canoe.

I'm sure there will be more to come - when people cross the line to commit one lot of wrong doing, it slides very quickly into lots of others

BreakWindandFire · 04/09/2016 19:08

"I'm Jim, spelt J-I-M, and I sell big washing machines!" lol

Should have called himself Keith Daz.

Lucydogz · 04/09/2016 19:08

Apparently he's survived so far by playing the race card

claig · 04/09/2016 19:50

"then why on earth would you think you could get away with something like this and it wouldn't end up front page news?

We know with other MPs that things were widely known about them in the Westminster bubble etc but the public was never told. Only later when things were revealed did the public become aware. The expenses stuff must have been widely known among an inner circle, as well as other things. I think that is why some MPs have no fear of things being made public.

claig · 04/09/2016 20:00

I am surprised it was the Sunday Mirror, a Labour supporting paper, that published this.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/09/2016 20:39

he has been able to make umpteen comebacks. Why?

Perhaps he knows where too many bodies are buried? Wink

GeorgeTheThird · 04/09/2016 20:42

Keith Daz 😄

Goingtobeawesome · 04/09/2016 20:52

I met him once when he came to the house of the people I was au pairing for abroad. I hope it's not true for his families sake.

Helmetbymidnight · 04/09/2016 20:55

He must have thought he was invincible.

What a chump.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/09/2016 21:55

Unprotected sex with escorts in the days of rampant syphilis and AB resistant gonorrhoea is sheer madness. No one's invincible to that.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/09/2016 21:56

If that's what he did, of course.
