Killing him might make certain people happy, but it does not change one bloody thing!!!

The faces and names change but "War" remains constant.

cyrilsquirrel · 30/12/2006 09:39

this is so wrong. Watching that footage has really distressed me

the death penalty is wrong.

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 30/12/2006 09:56

The idiots.

Not sure that it's achieved nothing - on the contrary it's achieved all the wrong things. He'll just be a martyr now.

noddyholder · 30/12/2006 09:58

so wrong in so many ways

mummydear · 30/12/2006 09:58

When I posted the orginal link it didn't show the imgae of Hussein being lead to the gallows.

I'm sorry if anyone finds the link offensive, dont like the image myself .

They should have let him rot in jail for the rest of his life.

pooka · 30/12/2006 10:01

Don't believe in capital punishment. Better to rot in jail.

Aloha · 30/12/2006 10:03

So the Iraqi government spokesman says Saddam was 'very, very, very broken'. That sounds like rather desperate propaganda to me. He refused to wear a hood, looked dignified and brave & basically made the system look brutal and savage - which IMO is quite a coup for a bloodthirsty dictator.
Heard Tony Benn on the subject yesterday on Radio 5 and wanted to stand up and cheer at everything he said.

cyrilsquirrel · 30/12/2006 10:03

that's ok mummydear. I watched it on the news anyway and it made me sick. He looked like a defeated old man (which of course he was)

JoolsToo · 30/12/2006 10:04

I think we may see 'reprisals' as a result of this execution.

PinkTinsel · 30/12/2006 10:06

well he got off easy didn't he?

should have put him in a prison full of sunnai's and hlet them torture him to death like he tortured so many innocents.

as if his death will improve matters, now he's a martyr!

cyrilsquirrel · 30/12/2006 10:06

Bush and Blair have made themselves as bad as he was. They are now war criminals. Maybe we should hang them next?

iPodthereforiPoor · 30/12/2006 10:13

They convieniently handed him over to the Iraqi gov yesterday I believe - so their hands are clean, yeah right...

pooka · 30/12/2006 10:15
  1. Bush and Blair as bad as Saddam Hussein . I think not.

  2. Bush and Blair did not execute him. His trial and punishment was left to the Iraqi government I believe.

Regardelss - don't believe in capital punishment. Can't stand Bush partly because he does. As far as I am aware Blair not pro.

cyrilsquirrel · 30/12/2006 10:17

I think they are getting that way, sorry.

As for them not executing him, no, they didn't tie the noose around his neck (they're not that stupid) but they may as well have done. His so called 'trial' was a farce. He should have been tried in an international court of law (imo)

kiskidee · 30/12/2006 10:20

standing back to see how long it takes the US and UK to admit that Iraq is already in a civil war.

pooka · 30/12/2006 10:23

No need to apologise
I just remember hearing of so many terrible terrible tortures/executions and massacres under his regime right from the beginning and I'm afraid I can't even begin to believe that Blair (nor even Bush much as a loathe him) would perpetrate such atrocities. Not least because there is such freedom in the UK and the US to dissent and to protest and such a robust and free press.

hunkermunker · 30/12/2006 10:24

Ah, because of course, this will solve everything

cyrilsquirrel · 30/12/2006 10:29

ok, you are right, maybe they are not 'as bad' as him, in that they wouldn't be able to get away with the things he has but I do believe them both to be war criminals, who have started an un just war and are responsible for the loss of many, many lives.

This whole thing is just escalating. It is never going to end. Saddam's death will just fuel things even further.

I wonder how well Blair sleeps at night? (not very well by the look of him)
Bush, I think, is too stupid to even have a concious.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 30/12/2006 10:32

Have just seen Sky news and wondered if mumsnet would be talking about it!
I have to say, I don't feel as pleased as I thought I would. I feel a bit odd about the whole thing.
Dh said to me 'just remember all the things he has done to other people'.
The 'war' will always be there, nothing can or will stop this imo.

pooka · 30/12/2006 10:36

I agree that Bush is like a wooden plank - there's just no spark there of intelligence and humanity. And I think it's so sad that Blair who I basically believe is a man with a developed conscience and a fundamental desire to make things better has been enveloped by Bush. I think he would be inhuman if he didn't agonise about decision that have been made - think that agonising about one's decision is a good thing.
I personally think that it was the right thing to do - to depose Saddam not to execute him. But the way things have gone is very sad.

Blandmum · 30/12/2006 10:39

I don't agree with the death penalty and feel this will be counter productive on all sorts of levels.

I also think that Blair and Bush have been spectacularly misguided and have cause all manner of grief and tradgedy.

However I feel it is counterproductive to say they are 'just as bad' as Saddam, when they have done nothing like the level of gross, deliberate torture, mutilation and murder that Saddam was directly responsible for ordering. I remember the case of a woman Journalist who spoke out agains Saddam's wife. She was executed and her tongue cut out, which was sent to her family. Try as I might I can't remember Blair or Bush doing anthing like that.

Say they are wrong and stupid, for sure, but not the same.

LadyTophamHatt · 30/12/2006 10:40

Do you know, until I just watched that footage I didn't really h abve much of an opinion on the death penalty. It didn't really entry my field of thoughts IYSWIM.

I think I may have been slightly more in favour of it than against if I'm honest. I think with todays technology with DNA and stuff maybe it could be right in some circumstances. But I really never gave it much of a thought overall.

Just watching that footage has made me feel it's really wrong. Yes saddam hussein has done bloody awful things to that country and has alot of blood on his hands but he just looked like a random old man in that film.
I know I'm massively unaware of alot of stuff that goes on and I'm very naive to alot of the IRaq stuff. I just choose not to take much notice. Head in the sand and all that....

I sat here and thought What on earth could be going through his mind as they put that rope around his neck.

I thought it was quite sad. It's just so wrong.

cyrilsquirrel · 30/12/2006 10:43

that's how I felt LTH. He looked like a defeated old man. It said on the news he was repeating to himself 'don't be frightened'

That upset me.

I think I am niave to a lot of what he has done too but it's just wrong.

Blossomgoodwill · 30/12/2006 10:44

I am all in favour of the death penalty and think we should have it here, always have done.
A life for a life. I have no sympathy at all for someone who has killed so many people.
