poor bloke. he seems a genuinely nice bloke. I am sure he knew the risks he was taking doing it anyway, not that it makes it any less of a tradgedy, but you know what I mean. They wouldn't let just anyone do a stunt like that now would they?? I hope for his wife and childrens sake that he is ok.

clumsymum · 21/09/2006 12:05

I read "serious but stable" as very ill, but not imminently in danger of dying.

He had head injuries, and was taken to the Neurological dept at leeds (not the nearest hosp to the accident), so I am worried that it may well be serious, long term damage

clumsymum · 21/09/2006 12:07

talking about it on Jeremy Vine right now

throckenholt · 21/09/2006 12:11

on GMTV Dr Hilary whotsit explained it is a cased of trying to monitor his brain to make sure it is not swelling - which would cause further damage - and in the meantime just waiting for it to sort itself out a bit from the original injury.

He also said complaining of lower back pain was a good sign - presumably it means the nerves are not damaged.

I guess it is like any brain damage - takes a long time before you know the full extent.

Time will tell. I hope he is lucky.

LIZS · 21/09/2006 12:14

Really hope he makes a full recovery - his poor family

Apparently the car was decelerating at least, one of the parachutes had fired (not sure how many there are), then it veered off the circuit and rolled. Car has roll bars and safety cage etc like a GP car but became embedded in the earth with the impact so its effectiveness would have been reduced. Find myself hoping that he was doing this out of personal ambition and fulfillment not just for entertainment.

MatNanPlus · 21/09/2006 12:23

The doctors believe his status will remain unchanged for the day at serious but stable.

JC has arrived at the hospital earlier and said
Hammie would be heartened by the thoughts and best wishes from the public.

fairyjay · 21/09/2006 13:05

I do hope he comes through this - feel really sorry for his wife and family.

RTKangaMummy · 21/09/2006 14:47

+++++++++++++++ vibes for Richard and his family

Hope "power of mumsnet" is being sent up to him in Leeds

"Serious but stable" is what they are saying on BBC

We love him in this house too

SparklyGothKat · 21/09/2006 14:50

on skynews they said that he had no bleeding on brain, which is always good.

trace2 · 21/09/2006 14:54

on the link below, there was an e-mail i have sent him the good wishers from mumsnet

LIZS · 21/09/2006 14:55

Presumably they'll sedate him to give his body a chance to recover for a while so there wont' be much to add. Sounds more positive Sparkly.

CheesyFeet · 21/09/2006 15:26

I've just heard on the news that his doctor expects him to make a full recovery

ruty · 21/09/2006 15:31

very good news.

DelGirl · 21/09/2006 15:32

great news

RTKangaMummy · 21/09/2006 15:33

Oh, that's encouraging. Hope they are right. Bet once he's OK his wife has serious words about getting involved in these sort of stunts!

ginmummy · 21/09/2006 15:43

I know this might be just me being very optimistic, and bearing in mind we don't know what kind of injuries he sustained, nor should we until he and his family want us to, I reckon he'll be around for the next series of Top Gear which starts next month. They must have already shot most sequences for it and he's a determined bloke.

Mascaraohara · 21/09/2006 15:44

Lovely - hope his doctor is right...

CheesyFeet · 21/09/2006 16:32

Apparently he is now sitting up in bed (according to Yorksire Real Radio News)

I said to dh this morning that if I were his wife, I wouldn't let him anywhere near a stunt like that again.

beckybrastraps · 21/09/2006 16:35

Yep. Let him recover a bit, then give him hell!

sockmonkey · 21/09/2006 16:49

I have been rooted to the news all day. Glad that Jeremy C and James M have gone up to see him. They do appear to all be good mates on the show, despite their little tiffs. My little boy loves Top gear, and said a prayer for Richard, which made me cry. He is only 3 but is a big fan and will often pretend to be Richard or Jeremy when he playes cars.

I hope he is back for Top Gear this series. It won't be the same without him

2mum · 21/09/2006 17:48

Its terrible news, totally awful. Im just after reading on Yahoo news Richard has suffered a signifcent brain injury.

JonesTheSteam · 21/09/2006 17:49

His father doesn't sound very optimistic at the moment.

here

codwiggle · 21/09/2006 17:49

"He is only 3 but is a big fan "

really?
