It isn't only for the extremely priveleged, that's just the perception, but it isn't really for everyone. It's for anyone prepared to do the travel, learn the extra languages (some people can't learn languages very easily) be further from home for longer (some can't afford to do this). But there is no getting around not being able to go home to get well fed at weekends, or being able to save up, look after sick relatives or stay in touch with grandparents as easily. And when you return the friends and contacts and work experiences you made are in another country.
