Madeleine McCann investigation

I saw today that possible excavations are to start in the resort where MM went missing.

Does anyone think the progress The Met have made is astonishing given the length of time that has elapsed? I can't help but wonder what progress could have been made if they had been involved at the start.

I really hope that somehow they can find out what happened and give her family some sort of closure. I know the ins and outs of what happened and her parents leaving her have been discussed at length on MN but from a crime point of view I would be very interested to see if the Portugese police had done enough or not.

la Volvan taken in by what exactly - You my friend have been taken in by some sick conspiracy theories !!

ExcuseTypos · 11/05/2014 08:36

LaVolcan you sound rather silly now.

MrRedAndBlue · 11/05/2014 08:38

70hours - I do not know whether the McCanns are innocent or guilty of anything.

But I do know that it is not unusual for 'normal' people do things which are not 'normal'.

MrRedAndBlue · 11/05/2014 08:42

ExcuseTypos - And the above post about the Express reporter doesn't prove a thing. Maybe his reports were thruthful but the susequent things published on the front page of the newspaper were lies. The paper admitted they were lies. To suggest a paper would pay out £500,000 because Carter Ruck were on the case, shows how naive you are.

I can assure you I am not naive. I have a lot of experience of dealing with the media - which includes being interviewed on the television, radio and in print, as well having several hundred articles published in the media. I am well aware of how these things work.

HavannaSlife · 11/05/2014 08:44

I would rather be known as a mccan apologiser than imply the parents did something to her or covered up an accident when there is no proof that it was them.

Looking at km over the years I very much doubt she could have held it together in front of everyone for those hours during dinner

noddyholder · 11/05/2014 08:45

Sabrina do you know them as you are using the lingo of one of their supporters when you say they used the money for the 'campaign' that's Clarence Mitchell's favourite word

janey68 · 11/05/2014 08:48

Bingo!!

I say that I don't know what happened (because none of us do) and point out that the abduction theory is exactly that - a theory which is unproven, and immediately one or two posters jump in assuming that this means I am accusing the mccanns or their friends of directly being responsible for MMs disappearance!

The lack of logic is frightening.

I repeat: the abduction theory is ONE theory. It is unproven. Other theories are possible. They are also unproven. What many of us object to is that the mccanns have engineered the media to the extent that for a while it was actually impossible to even mention MM's 'disappearance'. Clearly some of you don't remember mumsnet a few years ago when posts would be deleted for mentioning 'disappearance' rather than 'abduction'. There was extreme prejudice against anyone who dared to question it.

I do think things have moved on from then (eg MNHQ aren't as delete-happy now) and of course some of the publicity has come back to nite the mccanns in a negative way which I guess was inevitable and must be very painful for them. And I totally agree that some of the things written about them are downright vile and totally lacking in compassion.

But it's possible to believe they have been badly treated in some respects while simultaneously believing that they have acted out of self interest at times, trying to protect their reputation rather than keep an open mind, particularly GM.

At the end of the day- we don't know what happened. People are perfectly entitled to believe in the abduction theory if they want ( though its ironic that those who do, are dismissive of anyone believing in any other theory)

Personally I don't believe in any particular theory because - news flash- I wasn't there, I don't know and the actual truth is, none of us on here know

LaVolcan · 11/05/2014 08:48

Please yourself ExcuseTypos. If believing that there are at least two sides to every story is silly, then I am quite happy to go along with that. I would have liked to believe that Madeleine woke and wandered, but the PR campaign made me wonder just exactly what did happen. I don't recall any PR campaigns for other missing children.

Taken in by the PJ? I have no reason to believe that the documents released were fabricated.

janey68 · 11/05/2014 08:50

bite

ExcuseTypos · 11/05/2014 08:50

Ok if you aren't naive MrRed, you are simply incorrect.

Newspapers do not pay out a huge amount of money, simply because a specific firm of lawyers are taking them to court.

70hours · 11/05/2014 08:51

noddy does it matter if she does or doesn't ? Mr Red and Blue this is extreme thought and two people doing it together without so ,much as to raise suspicion amongst friends - come on -

TheLateMrsLizCromwell · 11/05/2014 08:53

Noddy I have been struck by the fact that Sabrina states things that sounds as if she knows the McCs eg 'Gerry is intelligent' - maybe Mrs McCs book was so convincing that it makes Sabrina feel she know them personally? If she does know them personally there would be no harm in saying so - I'm sure that given the demographic of MN people on here do know the McCs and their Tapas pals.

noddyholder · 11/05/2014 08:56

No it doesn't matter but it's true what others say only those pro the abduction theory refuse to accept there nay be another. Kate and Gerry have absolutely ruled out wandered off due to how they found the room. So this leads to thinking there nay be other scenarios, SY said only recently the abduction theory may not fit with all their thinking and the little girl may not have left the apartment alive.

LaVolcan · 11/05/2014 08:56

I don't doubt that someone who has successfully completed their medical training and gone on to become a Consultant is intelligent. It doesn't make them a successful PR person, which IMO Gerry McCann is not.

70hours · 11/05/2014 08:56

Janey you are right no one knows - - but if it makes you feel better aout yourself you go ahead finding thi vd to pick on the Mccans for - they can't do right for dong wrong - if they didn't take people to court they would be accused of 'see if it wasn't true they would have taken them to court etc'. -

I believe the abduction theories because the other ones just couldn't have realistically happened in the circumstances and the time frame- I am noones supporter and no one has convinced me what to believe I have just thought aou all the things that could have happened and then used my common sense !!!

janey68 · 11/05/2014 08:59

YY theLateMrsLizCromwell - in all probability there will be friends or acquaintance of the family on here and it would be much easier if people told us that outright. I too thought it suggested first hand knowledge, the way things were worded

TheLateMrsLizCromwell · 11/05/2014 08:59

The lack of logic is frightening
Janey - yes, it worries me too - especially as we are all surrounded by media 24/7 and much easier to get opinions from there rather than looking to sources...
(Slightly off topic, but to illustrate... I am researching a paper at the moment and have come across numerous academic papers which have reproduced Dales Cone of Learning with percentages. They have lazily copied secondary sources without going back to the original - which had no percentages - these have been spuriously added later and it has become the established 'truth' Sad)

noddyholder · 11/05/2014 09:00

You see I don't think abduction could have happened given time scales etc so it's just 2 sides really. I think they were checking too regularly no car was used and getting out that little window with a child would be tricky etc. I don't think people who take children walk through streets with them either so from that I conclude she probably wasn't abducted but gave no idea what did happen.

janey68 · 11/05/2014 09:01

70hours- I guess you should be offering your services to the police then, since your superior 'common sense' is proof enough that MM was abducted, and nothing else could possibly be true

ExcuseTypos · 11/05/2014 09:02

Janey- you can believe what you like- its a free country. However what I object to and have repeated several times- are the lies and rumours which are printed in these threads.

When someone happens to point out those lies- we are jumped on as apologists and someone who's been "taken in". It's insulting.

The McCanns haven't successfully sued anyone-YES they have
The Friends left within 48 hours - NO they didn't
The McCanns regularly drugged their children- No they didn't.

ExcuseTypos · 11/05/2014 09:02

Etc etc etc etc

70hours · 11/05/2014 09:03

noddy did you are the video of the boy and the man in Derby on here on Friday I think - it took seconds to lead him away from his mum(not sure that man was intentionally trying to do that though) SECONDS

70hours · 11/05/2014 09:04

Good idea Janey I think I will - wait they must have it too - since there have been BO charges brought against anyone yet - maybe because they haven't found the abductor ???

noddyholder · 11/05/2014 09:06

70 no haven't seen it but as I have said before I am not here to be convinced of the abduction theory I made up my mind ages ago about this and nothing will change my mind as nothing will change yours Smile

70hours · 11/05/2014 09:07

So Noddy enlighten us all with your 'theory' -
