Sorry back tracking a bit here. which side of the bed did Oscar sleep on - the side by the window or the side by the bathroom?

Mama1980 · 10/04/2014 15:27

Just Marking place to catch up later

ZuluinJozi · 10/04/2014 15:27

@Africanexport - It is so bad there ae those that would call it genocide

You are lying and in typical SA in UK fashion want to use Reeva's death to validate your political agenda. It is no doubt that crime in SA is rife, but say that farm murders is genocide is a life, it was never proved that farmers were attacked because they are white or for political reasons.

If the systematic murders of blacks during apartheid was not genocide, how can you claim that farm murders was?

What happened to Reeva is horrific without you adding your inexcusable justification for Oscar firing 4 shots behind a close door.

I have lived closer to where he lives, in a safe but not safer than his Silver Lakes house, yet I do not own a gun nor do I know anyone with one, and do not even know anyone who would fire 4 shots.

Oscar fired 4 shots to kill, I am waiting to see who was his target.

LouiseBrooks · 10/04/2014 15:29

"Surely the witnesses who heard screams are the evidence?

There's a careful legal distinction I would imagine. From what I gather, once the prosecution have finished presenting their case, they can't introduce new stuff during cross examination.

StackALee · 10/04/2014 15:30

The side by the window but wasn't there something about how he usually slept the other side but had hurt his shoulder so was sleeping on the window side (because it had to be away from reeva?)?

Allthreerolledintoone · 10/04/2014 15:30

I missed the trial yesterday is there anywhere where I can watch to catch up??

GladitsnotJustMe · 10/04/2014 15:31

Does anyone else find Nel's manner a bit annoying? I mean the way he talks, he doesn't speak straight, clear sentences. He backtracks, speaks half-sentences, repeats himself etc.

I find it annoying at best, but confusing and unprofessional sounding at worst.

I'm sure he's excellent at what he does, but wouldn't you think he would phrase his sentences more clearly?

StackALee · 10/04/2014 15:33

"Does anyone else find Nel's manner a bit annoying?"

yes, he starts one line of questioning then jumps all over the place.

I think he is doing it deliberately to try and catch Oscar P out, I think OP finds it hard to understand what he is being asked a lot of the time.

GladitsnotJustMe · 10/04/2014 15:38

I think he is doing it deliberately to try and catch Oscar P out

Yes I wondered whether it was deliberate - apparently he has a fearsome reputation, so he must be good at his job. Perhaps it is indeed a tactic to confuse and put OP on the backfoot.

Maybe he's all too aware of the rehearsed answers OP must have prepared, and so he thinks that if he asks him smooth, straight questions, OP will be able to formulate a pre-prepared response easily.

All this jumping around might be one way to try and rattle him.

Still sounds unprofessional sometimes though

LouiseBrooks · 10/04/2014 15:38

I find Nel very annoying. He is hectoring, which is his job of course but he also has a tendency to smirk which I find very theatrical. I wonder if he's always like that or is he playing to the cameras?

He was told to speak up a bit by the Judge.

GladitsnotJustMe · 10/04/2014 15:41

Yes he is hectoring.

I just feel that if it were me, and I knew exactly what happened and was telling the truth, then no amount of hectoring would shake that.

Hectoring only works when someone has constructed a web of lies which can be unravelled.

Having said that, it's impossible to say how much you might doubt your own memory, and question yourself, after such a traumatic incident.

ExcuseTypos · 10/04/2014 15:44

I fine Nel's manner very annoying too. I find him incredibly hard to understand him and I wonder if that is why OP keeps saying he doesn't understand.

I think the photos thing was also vey sneaky today. Nel was talking about 2 different photos, one showed today and one showed yesterday but he kept interchanging which one he was asking questions about. I think OP did very well to keep on top of what the heck Nel was referring to.

Bonnielangbird · 10/04/2014 15:45

Agree, he smirks and also smiled/chuckled when a phone went off which I found unprofessional. Pretty sure the asking waffly questions is meant to confuse OP. It certainly confuses me a bit. Yesterday he accused him of never answering the question asked and wanted him to tell him what the question was. I actually couldn't remember it myself so like OP I would have also got it wrong.

JillJ72 · 10/04/2014 15:48

I watched the last 5 mins streamed by BBC before they adjourned and felt like it was naughty schoolboy v strict headmaster, as in "You aren't telling me what I want to hear".... but it might be he can't (and will also say it could be that he won't) tell Nel what he wants to hear.

LouiseBrooks · 10/04/2014 15:49

"Nel was talking about 2 different photos, one showed today and one showed yesterday"

Yesterday wasn't he asking something about photos but when OP asked to see it or them, he said there was no need? That was ridiculous.

SauceForTheGander · 10/04/2014 15:57

Nel behaves like this is personal - like he utterly loathes OP - which may backfire as OP enjoys being a blameless victim.

Though OP's team will wind up hating him too if he keeps blaming them for everything he can't remember.

GladitsnotJustMe · 10/04/2014 15:59

Yes I agree that Nel's undisguised contempt might backfire. Although the Judge is no fool, I think she's seeing straight through all the dramatics.

Can you recap on how OP has blamed his legal team? I must have missed that.

SauceForTheGander · 10/04/2014 16:01

That he wasn't told something in his bail document

Blush I can't remember exactly what was said - there were a couple of things he said he wasn't briefed on ?

ExcuseTypos · 10/04/2014 16:02

Yes Louise. Nel asked yesterday what had been moved in photos and Op asked to see photos and said he'd go through them, Nel said he didn't need to see them. He then did showed one, which was a photo taken of the big fan and its plug.

Today he showed a much wider angled shot of the fan. Which included the window, curtains, duvet and bed. Nel said "when we showed this photo yesterday you said there was nothing wrong with it". OP said he hadn't seen that photo yesterday but a different one.

Surely Nel can't do stuff like that?

JillJ72 · 10/04/2014 16:03

None of the pussyfooting around will be getting Reeva's parents answers.

OP posts:
voiceofgodot · 10/04/2014 16:04

I've read that cross-exam in SA can be more aggressive than here in the UK due in part perhaps to a lack of jury. Nel does not have to work to have anybody 'on his side' in the same way he might try to curry favour with a jury.

I find it all deeply unpleasant to watch, but try to remember that sometimes it takes this level of aggression to get to the truth. Nel's objective is for justice to be seen to be done, and he is considered the best there is in SA. We might not like the process, but I do think it necessary. A woman has lost her life, she is entitled to the most rigorous of legal processes in order for the right verdict to be delivered.

Pennies · 10/04/2014 16:05

It certainly seems very underhand. Why aren't Pistorius' legal team objecting though?

member · 10/04/2014 16:06

Thanks for the explanation re Roux's objection.

LouiseBrooks · 10/04/2014 16:07

To add a touch of levity, this from Twitter

"Imagine you're a teenager and Gerrie is ur dad. And u come back 5 minutes late from a date"

ZuluinJozi · 10/04/2014 16:08

GladitsnotJustMe I know of 3 that OP blames his defence team on, that he never claimed to have gone out to the balcony to fetch the fan, that he has always maintained to his lawyers that it was 2 fans not one fan as written on his bail application and that he has never said he fired with a double tap but in rapid succession Hmm
