Octopusinabunchofdaffodils · 23/03/2014 12:30

They're saying now the Australian and Chinese pieces of debris are not the same item...

Anything more on this ?

TheresAHedgehogInMyPocket · 23/03/2014 13:20

Is there a way of seeing what others have tagged?

Hedgehog I think that tomnod keep everything "double-blind" so that they get a uniform coverage and "unbiassed" tagging.

Their algorithm is "collaborative", you don't get to feel as though you are collaborating.Grin

TBH they would be better off just torrenting the images in big chunks 50-200MB say, have a forum for each chunk, and just let everyone get on with it!

woodmouse2 · 23/03/2014 14:00

Just for interest - this container ship is the first really identifiable thing I've seen on tomnod and it's huge. Didn't know if my previous map ref could be a liferaft.....

BoiledPiss · 23/03/2014 14:34

woodmouse that pic is really spooky!

woodmouse2 · 23/03/2014 15:16

boiledpiss - the container ship you mean? I know! It was the first identifiable object I'd seen and brought home to me that this search is for real.....

woodmouse2 · 23/03/2014 15:25

hedgehog "And can you get any closer so you are not tagging general rubbish?"
I've only got an ancient laptop but if I keep pressing Ctrl and + it zooms in and you can centre on the object; there should be a 20m/100ft key at the bottom of the screen so you can get an idea of the size as well. To get back out again press Ctrl and -
HTH

BoiledPiss · 23/03/2014 15:52

Yes, i think the fact it is so dark makes it really eerie!

I was searching for ages earlier this week and i was trawling map afte map, I came across a boat, followed by three weird arrow shaped things in the water, in a v shape. I tagged them in a panic as they just looked like an aeroplane tail... I scrolled about three squares to the left and reached the shore... I think they were jetski's Blush

Nobhead!

FunkyChickensOnTheMove · 23/03/2014 15:59

I am struggling with Tomnod. It takes ages to load and always says Waiting for Map. I have a good BB speed and new laptop! So maybe its being overloaded by people using it? Has anyone else encountered this?

FunkyChickensOnTheMove · 23/03/2014 16:11

Ignore that Ive sussed it

woodmouse2 · 23/03/2014 16:19

funky mine's a wireless laptop and slow is normal for me - says waiting for map as well but you can go from a 'working' url in your [Google?] search bar and substitute any map ref at random and go from there [you could use mine above for the container ship]. I have just found some coastline and a coast road and a track; followed the track through what must be jungle and saw some double circle in a square clearing then further on what must be a village. No idea of geographic location but was interesting! O well, back into the water.....

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 23/03/2014 17:27

Is Tomnod a legit thing? I thought it was for entertainment! Confused

member · 23/03/2014 17:35

Bona fide sat images BUT a week old so more entertainment than game-changing I'd say...

Mimishimi · 23/03/2014 19:21

Have the French satellite images been made public? I haven't seen a news programme which has shown them.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 23/03/2014 19:56

"It also clarified that the French authorities had passed on data in the form of "satellite-generated radar echoes" rather than images. Radar works by sending out radio waves or microwaves and listening for echoes that bounce back."

From the bbc.

Mimishimi how do I get to where you are looking? The link takes me to a set of blank map tiles & I can't tell which one is 95101.

CharlieSierra · 23/03/2014 20:17

Ah ok. Thank you I hadn't heard that.
