I forgot my hat yesterday & I think they got to me! I spent most of the day preoccupied & feeling sad because I believed the elephant theory. I always get affected when I hear about suicides. Sad

Hat firmly in place again today & I'm leaning towards cyber-jacking by the US. Although, I do wonder if it's possible for them to have locked the pilots out of the navigation systems, had there been a hijacking.

If the elephant theory is correct, I hope they find the wreckage but either don't find the black box or there's just silence from the previous 2 hours. That way the families will know there's no hope of survivors but 'his' whoever that may be family can tell themselves it was a hijacking that he prevented. I think that would be kindest for everyone.

Tony Abbott sure is milking all this attention !

Stop press !... A pallet has been found floating in the Indian ocean !

Our seas are full of junk.. whole man made islands of rubbish...

livingzuid · 23/03/2014 09:20

Yes I thought so on the straps too but the BBC article is less clear on what they are. Either way I don't think they would be talking about a few planks of wood if they weren't sure it was something to do with the plane.

livingzuid · 23/03/2014 09:21

But diesel agree Tony Abbot is making the most of this pr opportunity Angry

Hmmkay · 23/03/2014 09:24

That phone call from someone using a false identity sounds beyond dodgy to me. Surely that would have something to do with it all? Who knows.

DieselSpillage · 23/03/2014 09:27

Meanwhile.... over in the Ukraine...

livingzuid · 23/03/2014 09:29

Yep. Putin at his best. I can't even read about that any more am Shock that it can happen in this day and age. Isn't this what Hitler did to Austria and the world stood by?

Sorry, derail over...

I mean to say all this plane mystery is proving a great distraction...

slartybartfast · 23/03/2014 09:32

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-26703821

a distraction indeed

JKSLtd · 23/03/2014 09:34

Could just be a woman he was seeing but not openly.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 23/03/2014 09:34

There is always something going on politically from which another major story is a distraction. See "Wag the Dog".

DieselSpillage · 23/03/2014 09:43

The 20 Freescale experts who now presumably will be not sharing their expertise in China.....

Hmmkay · 23/03/2014 09:44

Sky news have just tweeted that a French satellite image has shown possible debris in the southern search area as well.

livingzuid · 23/03/2014 09:52

I remember when the enquiry into Iraq was released and London mysteriously had half the city go down in a power outage. Which had not happened before and certainly not to my knowledge after.

It would be cruel in the extreme to be using this as a diversion from really quite frightening world events.

JKSLtd · 23/03/2014 10:07

I wonder if Goldie's about - or someone else who knows - will the cvr & fdr definitely only have the last 2 hrs on? Is there a techie way to get older stuff from them?

If everyone was dead on board 2 hours of silence other than cockpit warnings would be v depressing to sit through Hmm
And the fdr would be pretty blank too I guess until the end.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 23/03/2014 10:13

I think the flight data recorder would have all the changes of direction.

I thought the circuit to the voice recorder was broken so we'd have cockpit recordings up to that point which was around the time contact was lost -?

JKSLtd · 23/03/2014 10:34

Wiki says the fdr can record 17-25hrs.
The cvr from 30mins to 2hrs.

Hopefully the. Fdr in this case is found and gives lots of answers.

LouSend · 23/03/2014 10:52

So if the captain got a phone call from an unregistered phone do they have a recording of what was said? Or how do they know it was a woman?

Presumably if the phone was bought by a woman who gave false id it may not necessarily have been a woman buying it. It may not have been a woman using it.

How common is it in Malaysia to buy a phone and register false info? Is it something that may be checked, or is it like us giving false details to commercial companies to avoid endless marketing emails and phone calls?

Would people who were having an affair, for example, be able to easily buy a second phone without giving correct details, and would it be reasonably commonplace, or is this a very significant piece of information?

Mimishimi · 23/03/2014 11:36

I don't know if anyone else is tomnodding or not but has anyone noticed a huge amount of what looks like debris near map 95101. About 10 'maps' to the east and twelve maps to the north and a few west/south are full of what looks like litter, not just normal whitecapping. Perhaps it's just a storm blowing up but I've been browsing for days and this stands out.

Haven't the foggiest how their mapping system works though and I have no idea how I would direct you to that map. The mapping numbers seem totally random and impossible to 'navigate'.

LouSend · 23/03/2014 11:39

Mimi from the bbc live feed:

11:33
A Malaysian official involved in the search mission tells the Associated Press that the new French satellite image was captured on Friday and showed potential objects about 930km (575 miles) north of where the objects reported by the Australian and Chinese authorities were seen.

hackmum · 23/03/2014 11:41

"Or how do they know it was a woman?"

I've been wondering that. The only way they could be certain it was a woman, surely, is if they had a recording of the conversation.

LouSend · 23/03/2014 11:42

Sorry, posted too soon.

Do you think that's what you can see, Mimi?

LouSend · 23/03/2014 11:49

Re the mobile phone call, according to the bbc live feed (again):

Malaysian police have dismissed as mere speculation a report by the UK's Daily Mail newspaper that the captain of Flight MH370 received a call shortly before take-off from a woman using a mobile phone number obtained under a false identity, according to The Star Online
. A spokeswoman was quoted as saying the information "originates from unnamed and unverified sources"

Mimishimi · 23/03/2014 12:02

I don't know:( Their mapping system is incomprehensible and totally prevents a collaborative effort. Which makes me wonder about actually .... the best way I could describe how to get there would be to go to the Indian Ocean map (think that's the only one on the site now). Go all the way to the right bottom corner of the map, that will take you a while unless you skip map tiles. Then go thirteen tiles up and 33 back to the left and that would get you in the general vicinity. Then look at all the tiles surrounding as well for about ten to thirteen tiles in each direction.
