IPCC report: Why is no one on Mumsnet talking about climate change?

WillPenn · 28/09/2013 22:21

Was very surprised to see hardly any talk about climate change on here, following on from the latest IPCC report. Are none of you worried about your kids' future or is everyone just sticking their heads in the sand?

It makes me panic to think what lies ahead for my DC if no one acts. Come on Mumsnet, how about a ground up campaign to try and get the govt. and the nation to tackle this elephant in the room head on?

As a family, we are doing what we can to cut back on energy usage - but we are just four people and I'm feeling pretty hopeless about the whole situation at the moment when nobody else seems to care about the future.

I use my car when I need to travel and I use as much water as I need. I don't waste it by letting the taps run. But the resources that I use in my home are dwarfed by the resources and gas guzzling and plane flights that people like Al Gore use.

The Green Party are not wrong on everything. They are right about pollution and environmental damage and nuclear etc.

Climate change is real. It is happening. Man is making it happen far faster than nature ever has.
If the temperature rises by 4 degrees in the next 200 years, the planet will be just fine. It will recover and ecosystems will adapt.
But human 'civilisation' will not be part of that Ecosystem.

'If the temperature rises by 4 degrees in the next 200 years, the planet will be just fine.'

Is this based on one of their models? Is it the same model that didn't foresee the cooling of the last 15 years?

What global cooling? - Daily Mail links not allowed.

@Talkinpeace in fact the IPCC models showing 4 degree increases have been totally debunked, they are now admitting the increase is likely to be far lower than their lowest assumptions.

They want to push through acts that will change our whole way of life. Maurice Strong said at the Rio earth Summit
"home and work air conditioning, and suburban housing are not sustainable"

They want to push through these low growth policies based on their models. But their models have been shown to have flaws and they face opposition from the public and some of the 'cabs for hire' who have escaped the yoke.

UKIP do not swallow the programme and the new Prime minister of Australia has been reported as saying that manmade global warming is bunkum and a former Spanish PM said something similar.

Now they say they are 95% certain that it is happening but even politicians are slowing their zeal for it as they realise that the public have not swallowed it and fear that they may be voted out. the Australian public gave a landslide to the new government and kicked the socialists out in large part due to their carbon tax policy.

No matter how much the BBC and the corporate media and the 'cabs for hire' paint a picture of woe for the polar bear, the public don't believe it in enough numbers for the elite to persuade their puppets to go full steam ahead.

The game's up, it's over, the public has passed the "tipping point" of disbelief and parties who follow the same old line will eventually be voted out.

KittiesInsane · 30/09/2013 17:27

Errm, not quite; they are suggesting that sensitivity, i.e. the rise for a certain increase in CO2 might be lower.

And you have to understand why they want to curb the population.
Don't believe their dire models and warnings about population, just as many of us don't believe their dire warnings about swine flu or what they call climate catastrophe.

A tiny elite of humanity owns most of teh welth and sits on vast tracts of land while millions starve and people can't earn a living wage and are kicked out of their homes because they can't afford £14 extra for a spare room and where thousands queue up at foodbanks to feed themselves while some bankers take home millions in bonuses.

While we read today of Blair flying around the world in a £7000 per hour jet, there are people who can't afford to drive their cars to shop or see their relatives because they can't afford teh fuell and some old people die in winter because they can't afford to heat their homes.

This tiny elite of privilieged individuals knows that if teh population keeps rising, in the end they will demand access to the resources that the elite themselves are hoarding. That is why the elite are so determined to do everything they can to stem population growth and stem the movement to equality and a fair wage and a fair share for all.

The solution of the elite is to cut back all of our resources, impoverish us and force us to pay through the nose for electricty and water under teh pretense of climate catastrophe in the hope that they can keep us down and prevent us from demanding fairness.

But they will fail, because they are like King Canute and the tide is on our side.

You need to read the science press more. The 4% is reduced probability within 100 years. My comment was 200 years.

No, I meant an actual link to the IPCC report .... not the same leak that the Daily Fail had as reported by the Daily Hellograph.

'The financial markets are humanity’s only hope in the battle against global warming, the world’s top climate expert declared today as he presented the most overwhelming case ever made that humans are responsible for rapidly increasing the Earth’s temperature.'

The financial markets? Grin Yeah right. More money for the traders and the dealers while people's fuel prices drive them into fuel poverty. More salaries and consultancy fees for the 'cabs for hire' who jet around the world and shaft the people for the benefit of the tiny elite of humanity.

Of course they don't like the Daily Mail, because it constantly tells the truth and some of teh 'cabs for hire' have complained that it is the irresponsible media who are misleading the 'hardworking' people by exposing some of these frauds and climate change charlatans.

I don't know how to reassure children, I think I'd tell them there is uncertainty about what exactly will happen and when but that scientists are trying to find out and to prevent the worst effects. Then I'd encourage them to earn enough to be in the ark when it comes to that.

The IPCC released the press briefing on Friday, but only released the report today. If you're a scientist what you do is release your research and then list your conclusions. The IPCC has listed its conclusions and waited a whole weekend for the none-too-bright media to get distracted, and then released the report once the media had spotted something else to gawk at.

Why would they do that?

Report
HesterShaw · 30/09/2013 18:33

politicians are slowing their zeal for it as they realise that the public have not swallowed it and fear that they may be voted out.

Which is why we're all screwed. Nothing will be agreed upon, because politics is all about short termism. Some things should not be political issues.

I'm interested in your take on population growth. If everyone on earth used as much as they wanted to, because there were no high costs inhibiting consumption because the so called elite had somehow been overthrown, and population growth was completely uncontrolled, and modern medicine meant that most people lived into their eighties or even just seventies, would that be just fine?

Report
claig · 30/09/2013 18:42

Yes it would be fine, because nature would create equilibrium. As societies advance and prosper and women join the workforce, the population naturally stops rising too high, just as has happened in the West, except that in the West the population is actually falling if you exclude immigration.

I believe in leaving it up to nature and people to make their own decisions about the size of their families rather than allowing elitist Etonians and royalty and plutocrats to tell ordinary people how many children they can have. I don't believe in doom and gloom and the elite's Malthusian scares.

I am a true progressive, I believe in the progress of humanity and I believe that one day we will get the 'cabs for hire' off our backs and have true democracy and the tiny privileged elite of humanity will de forced to share their wealth with the billions of good people on this planet.

They say they are doing it because they care.

And as we are fortunate enough to probably live longer than our grandparents, we will need many more young people to be in work to pay for our retirement. But we have a crisis of a shortage of younger people and that will lead the elite to force us to work until we drop, to cut our pensions and our benefits and to cut our healthcare and give us crap hospitals where we may die early and unnecessarily of dehydration because they have allowed the standards in our hospitals to deteriorate to such an appalling extent.

We need more people, not less.
