Facebook message from NHS Blood Donation said

There has been a major incident in Cardiff which has resulted in a request for extra O- blood to be provided to help the local trauma unit. If you are O- and able to walk in into one our sessions this weekend please do so. To find the nearest session go onto blood.co.uk and put your postcode into the session searcher or give us a ring on 0300 123 23 23

I have no clue what could have been going on o cause this man to behave as he did, nor am I going to speculate.
But it is an awful event. The idea of parents just taking their children home from school being caught in the middle of this is just awful. I think it is terrible because the walk home from school is just such a normal, innocent symbol of childhood.

I couldn't sleep for thinking about this.

Hearing from people that knew the woman killed is just awful. I have no idea what the families involved must be going through.

There have been appeals for at least the last two weeks that o neg was running low. I am am o pos but had to cancel my appt to donate yesterday because of having had a bit of illness in the past week. I will go to a drop in session asap.

sgb, "grubby little miserable domestics"? are you serious, using a judgy phrase like that when that little girl hasn't even been found?

Cozy9 · 20/10/2012 08:02

Have they caught the bloke who did it?

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 20/10/2012 08:04

Where has she used that phrase?

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 20/10/2012 08:04

Yes, from what I've read Cozy, someone has been arrested

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 20/10/2012 08:06

Have you seen the map on the BBC news site? The locations are really quite far apart (I don't know the area at all). Looks like he did this in a fairly calculated way.

Pagwatch · 20/10/2012 08:08

It's in her last post shreeik.

I just posted this last night then this was first reported because it was just so unfathomable. But it going to turn into one of those threads I think with people shouting at each other. So I am going out.

Smile watching DD at a swimming gala so overheated and over emotional. The ideal location for an irritable menopausal woman....

11 seriously injured people, especially children, would completely poleaxe any a&e department in the country. Even one with major trauma center status.

For example, most hospitals only have 1 paediatric trauma team on shift at any one time. That means one paeds anaesthetist, surgeon, neurosurgeon, orthopod on a pager who can drop everything & attend. Sure there will be others in site who can come, but they will be in clinic/theaters/itu etc.

Even London's biggest trauma center only has 1 ct scanner in the department.

If you more than 4ish serious casualties at a time they will be waiting for scans, and waiting for theater.

In London it is possible to coordinate the ambulances to distribute casualties accross 4 hospitals. Cardiff won't be that lucky.

It must be horrible for all concerned.

happygilmore · 20/10/2012 08:37

Awful news. I so hope they all pull through.

O negative is a rare blood group, but the reason they'll want it is it can be given to anyone, even babies in the womb. In major trauma cases where there's no time to cross match they'll give O negative.

(I am this blood group and used to give blood but can't anymore after fortunately receiving a transfusion myself).

It might not help this incident but please any one reading this who wants to save a life, think about giving blood.

scaevola · 20/10/2012 08:48

I don't see how it can have been anything other than random attacks. Reports I have seen say there were four or five incidents within half an hour. It strains belief to think that he could have known precisely where intended victims were, driven between them and collided only with them (with those next to them, I suppose, being collateral) in that time frame and in the latter stages with the police chasing him. at the moment, there are no reports on his motivation, and if the right man is in custody there may be no word on this until trial

But perhaps later official announcements will show that view to be wrong and they are indeed all of targeted attacks.

BBC said 10 remain in hospital; they reported on the circumstances of some, but it wasn't clear if it was based on local or official information so I won't post what their words. Suffice to say some are in a serious condition.

chimchar · 20/10/2012 08:58

It's awful. I live close by and could see helicopters and hear sirens everywhere.

It has really bothered me... it is horrific as to how many people have been injured and the poor lady who died, but it could have potentially been so much worse with all of the schools that would have just finished....thinking fitzalan in particular....the kids are always spilling out onto the road, crossing in front of cars etc.

There doesn't seem to be any more updates this morning on the bbc website.. Has it been on the news?

happygilmore · 20/10/2012 09:02

on bbc news now

chimchar · 20/10/2012 09:15

Shit. Missed it. Thanks for the heads up though!

flippinada · 20/10/2012 09:48

This is a horrific event and I can quite understand why people are distressed. Someone deliberately targetting pedestrians in this way is very frightening and upsetting - and it's certainly not an everyday event.

SGB I'm not sure why you feel it's necessary to make such unpleasant posts and then attack the NHS for appealing for help?

edam · 20/10/2012 10:15

suspected murderer runs over people in his van

Dunno why SGB was being so weird about this, it sums up the situation quite reasonably to say a murderer ran 13 people over, killing one woman and injuring 12. He does seem to fit the definition of evil bastard - I don't know what else you have to do to qualify as one?

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 20/10/2012 10:24

The Heath Hospital were very busy with lots of fractures and other minor injuries from the incident, my friends son included. It is a tragic loss of life and I hope and pray that the others who remain in hospital pull through.

SGB your comments are really uncalled for. The emergency services are all stretched to the limit but they do a great job, particularly in difficult situations like this. I hope that you and your family/friends are never caught up in something like this.
