Dd read that out to me earlier! Awful

weblette · 20/07/2012 11:34

Denver's had enough to deal with with shootings in the past :(

Minesaguinness · 20/07/2012 12:43

What is it about American society in particular that breeds this kind of action? You get gun rampages elsewhere but nowhere near as frequently.

Empusa · 20/07/2012 12:47

:( You'd never expect a cinema to be a target

BlackOutTheSun · 20/07/2012 12:47

So shocking Sad

ChickensHaveNoLips · 20/07/2012 12:49

Dreadful. Those poor, poor people :(

Empusa · 20/07/2012 12:57

Christ :( News stations are now reporting that the youngest victim is 3 months old

ChickensHaveNoLips · 20/07/2012 12:59

Oh no. Christ :(

BlackOutTheSun · 20/07/2012 13:01

3 months? Oh god Sad

Sad Why won't they just sort out their gun control?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/07/2012 13:04

Because the right to bear arms is in their constitution and they are never ever ever going to agree to any sort of gun control, after all carrying a gun makes you safer doncha know...

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 20/07/2012 13:14

This is not going to be viewed as a societal problem, nor a gun control one. It is going to be Batman's fault. Like it was Marilyn Mansons fault for Columbine. How awful for those people and their families.

Empusa · 20/07/2012 13:17

I wouldn't be surprised Snail

Though I also expect that we're going to find the shooter was trying to make a point, it sounds extremely planned and the fact he allowed himself to be arrested (rather than shooting himself or the police) suggests he had an agenda which he's going to want to share with the world

GobblersKnob · 20/07/2012 13:22

I am sure you are right snail, the DM already has this to say 'There were suggestions that the gunman was influenced by Bane, a character in the film which wears a dark mask covering his face'.

It's just unthinkable that that it happened at all and that there were kids involved.

Twitter is saying the 3 month old has been discharged from hospital

GobblersKnob · 20/07/2012 13:58

I think it wil be a while before the numbers become clear, BBc are now reporting 12 dead rather than 14 and 38 injured rather than 50.

I hope you are right about the baby, DM are reporting that he/she was shot in the back at point blank range.

OP posts:
Empusa · 20/07/2012 14:06

I've seen multiple accounts that the baby is fine, from less OTT publications than the DM. From what I've read the baby wasn't actually injured, but was taken to hospital to be checked over

GobblersKnob · 20/07/2012 14:09

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound like I was taking the Daily Fail as gospel, I meant the opposite. Very glad to hear reports sound positive.

Empusa · 20/07/2012 14:11

Gotta love how the DM seem to think the shooting wasn't quite shocking enough Hmm

I feel so sad for the victims and their families, seeing a premiere should be a fun thing, not a traumatic experience :(

Kveta · 20/07/2012 14:13

it's so grim :(

I always found it odd though how many babies and toddlers were at the cinema when I went in the states. and at a midnight screening?

juneau · 20/07/2012 14:41

As someone who lived in the US for six years (and holds a US passport), I wonder how many of these terrible mass shootings have to happen before there is a sensible debate about gun control. Because that's the issue with all these shootings - absolutely anyone can go and buy guns and create an arsenal in their homes - and it's their right to do it. My guess is ... never! Because the bloody NRA is too powerful and gives too much money to the Republican party and has too many lobbyists in Washington DC. It's a disgrace.

Empusa · 20/07/2012 14:46

I couldn't help smiling at the FB page of a guy who shares his name with the shooter, sounds like he's been getting lots of friend requests from ghouls. And as he points out, "But I would appreciate if you would read this particular post an not assume that it would be interesting to be friends with someone on Facebook who is very probably going to be in jail and not be able to confirm your friend requests anyway"

WRT blaming violent films, the irony of it being at a Batman film is that Batman never kills, and never uses guns.

juneau I imagine they'll try and put the blame on absolutely anything except easy access to guns :(

juneau · 20/07/2012 15:13

You're right. Violent films will be blamed. The crazy gunman will be blamed (rightly so, but he'd be crazy and weapon-free without the bloody 2nd amendment), I expect video games will also be blamed - anything but the fact that he could go into a shop and buy as many guns and rounds of ammunition as he liked.
