A sensible start would be banning the sale of automatic and assault weaponry to the general public.

I simply cannot see any legitimate reason why a member of public would need a machine gun. You can protect your own home perfectly well with a handgun.

The real problem is that the NRA is far too powerful in the US so politicians from all sides are unable/unwilling to tackle them.

I completely agree, and I say this as someone with a hunting rifle in the garage. What the hell would you need a machine gun for? Confused

niceguy2 · 24/07/2012 13:15

I think this clip from Eddie Murphy sums up the issue:

Very good!

Do you really think that banning guns would make any difference at all to this case?.

He obviously had an interest in armature bomb making, it was a packed cinema with what? 4 exits probably, if he walked in with a bag of hand made grenades and molotovs do you think the death toll would be less?.

flippinada · 25/07/2012 09:11

Short answer, yes.

flippinada · 25/07/2012 09:16

Sorry, that was in answer to the question about gun control.

Regarding the question about molotovs etc, possibly not. But I don't see how that negates the argument for limiting access to automatic/semi automatic weapons.

noblegiraffe · 25/07/2012 17:20

Would the death toll be less with hand made explosives? I heard that it was certainly less because his semi-automatic jammed and he had to switch to a hand gun. Certainly can't think of an argument for allowing those out in public.

With home-made explosives, the problem there is avoiding injury to yourself. Most people who make explosives don't intend to be there at the time of detonation leading to problems of remote detonation. Those that do intend to be there don't usually intend to survive.

There is a report today that gun sales have risen since the shooting.
