My RT arrived in the post this morning and my DS 16 opened it with enthusiasm as it's the first of four Olympic editions. The look on his face got my attention then I saw the cover and my jaw dropped! Now I am not a woman of colour or religious but OMG it must have been a man who signed off on this... I shudder to think of this on London newstands when all our foreign Olympic athletes and visitors hit town. What do others think? Am I being prudish or unreasonable? (It is going in a cover btw)

She's a triple / long jumper. She's jumping. She has a crotch. It is just so not gratuitous. And mostly very crotchly modest. The male gymnast is showing a bulge. It's just their bodies. Total overreaction IMO

Oh do get a grip, you can't see anything! I'm sure the 'foreign athletes' will see more offensive images than that on your average magazine stand!

Methe · 18/07/2012 20:00

Good god. Some people will find anything to be offended about!

OK fine - I suppose I did ask! Blush
My reaction was on behalf of others who might be needlessly offended really -not sure why I feel so strongly actually - possibly because of heairng about those two Saudi Women and knowing what a battle they have as my parents were out in the UAE for years and my Mum told me a lot about how women there tolerate a lot are patient and working away inch by inch particularly for their daughters' futures.

If you live too far from a town to buy the RT, have you perhaps not seen an actual newsstand recently? I doubt anyone looking at that is going to single out the RT cover as being desperately shocking.

ifeelloved · 18/07/2012 20:08

Omfg. What the hell is wrong with some people.

Unless I'm missing something , the pictures are of athletes doing what they do in the clothes they wear whilst doing it. Shock horror.

The other day there was horror that the word vagina was used in an ad. [shakes head in disbelief]

ThePigOnTheWall · 18/07/2012 20:13

If you're worried about women's rights op I would suggest you could get your crotch in a knot about many many more things than that rt cover

You might also want to revisit and update done of the terms you use.

bitofcheese · 19/07/2012 11:42

i buy the rt weekly, it didn't come into my head, i think you must be somewhat uptight for it to have come into your head that you can see her crutch....i am guessing that this is what offends you. i had to go and look at it to see what i had missed. you can't actually see her vagina can you

Rindercella · 19/07/2012 11:49

OMG!!! Have you seen one of the other covers? It actually has a male diver's nipples showing

Birdsgottafly · 19/07/2012 20:35

There was a thread in AIBU, a while ago that linked different pictures based on gender, so althletes, sports people, super hero's and the difference was plain to see.

The female pictures were firstly sexual and in very different poses than the men.

It would have been nice to see progress about sportswomen being taken as seriously as their male counterparts, but the whole advert campaigns and articles have shown that this still isn't the case.

malinois · 19/07/2012 20:55

The most shocking thing about this thread is the revelation that the Radio Times is still being published! I would have thought that the Internet and channel guides on digital TV would have killed it stone dead.

DilysPrice · 19/07/2012 21:28

Noooo, with 74 channels it is absolutely vital to have the RT, otherwise you miss little gems hidden on Quest at 3am. Noone else can be trusted.
