Absolutly devastaed by this today i was lucky enough to have met Gary through work lots of times a true gent.

My friend played with Gary in wales and is in total shock i just pray the press leave his wife and 2 sons alone

RIP Gary Sad

katkitya · 27/11/2011 21:49

So tragic. Everyone is saying that he was one of a kind in the football world, a true gent and friend. His family will be devasted. I also hope the press leave them alone Sad

CointreauVersial · 27/11/2011 21:54

So sad when kids are left without a parent in such tragic circumstances. A close friend of DH's did the same thing a couple of years ago, and this brought it all back. Sad

southeastastra · 27/11/2011 21:56

this is really odd, i am his age

what would make him want to do this? was he being called for the levenson thing?

katkitya · 27/11/2011 22:00

Who knows what makes people so desperate? My brothers friend did it at the age of 21. My mum's best friend at 63. No-one saw it coming. I think there must be different types, the thought out and the act caused my some kind of psychiatric illness where you dont really know what you are doing. Either way is tragic.

whenskiesaregrey · 27/11/2011 22:32

Don't think he was being called for the leverson thing, don't think he ever had anything interesting enough going on for his phone to be hacked...he was just A.Normal.Guy. So sad. His son used to play football with my cousin, he used to go along to the tournaments, help out at training, chatted to all the other parents. One of his sons is 13 now I think. So so sad.

What strikes me is that all the people speaking about him on the news/ Sky Sports all say one way or another that they haven't spoken to him for a while, or they weren't that close. It makes you think if he had someone who he was close to? Someone to talk to? I just can't get my head around it.

how very sad, can't pretend to know who he is as never watch footie, but what a waste of a life. RIP

whenskiesaregrey · 27/11/2011 22:41

I did wonder whether it wise for the news to read out all of the police statement which included his full address. Not that the press would have had any difficulty finding out that info, but it isn't really conducive for the privacy his family so so need.

katkitya · 27/11/2011 22:45

Afew people have said what a good mate he was and a couple said that they only spoke to him yesterday. The guy who he did the programme with yesterday said that they went up to the Match of the Day studios for two hours talking to Alan Shearer so, it sounds that he had very good friends. Its tragic. My friend lost three nephews under the same circumstances. I just dont think you ever know whats going on in someones head. Its so terrible for his family Sad

BustersOfDoom · 27/11/2011 22:53

whenskiesaregrey Robbie Savage said they had spoken yesterday on the phone and that he was in good form chatting and laughing about football and Strictly. He looked absolutely devastated on BBC News and by all accounts they were good friends. GS went to watch Strictly a couple of weeks back as RS's guest and was in the front row.

I guess it just reinforces that if you don't want to talk to anyone then you don't. No matter how many friends you have. Maybe some things are just too difficult to share.

I know it's not the same thing but I remember when my DS was life threateningly ill I deliberately didn't tell some people because I didn't want to upset them or spoil their Christmas. Of course they were upset that they hadn't known or been able to support us but that is just the way I dealt with it at the time. Now I can see it was the wrong thing to do but then it just seemed like I was doing the best thing for everyone by not putting that burden on them. I can only imagine that if you feel so very low that you don't want to share that or worry that you are burdening those you care about.

ashamednamechanger · 27/11/2011 22:57

A lot of people are saying how shocked they are because he 'had so much to live for'.
Unfortunately people who are so depressed that they contemplate suicide can project a very different image.
Nbody knows what goes on in a person's head and living with suicidal thought is very hard.
Maybe he just got to the point where he had had enough of life.....it can be very hard.

topknob · 27/11/2011 23:04

I saw Robbie on Strictly tonight, poor man looked so upset even after getting through :( RIP Gary x

Nancy66 · 27/11/2011 23:14

The Strictly results show is recorded on Saturday night....

BustersOfDoom · 27/11/2011 23:22

Yes Nancy66 is right. The Strictly 'Sunday' show is usually filmed by about 11pm on Saturday night so Robbie wouldn't have known by then. News reports said that the police were called at about 7am this morning.

whenskiesaregrey · 27/11/2011 23:47

He must have been in a terrible terrible way to kill himself in such a way that his children could find him. He seemed like such a family man, he mustn't have been able to think rationally.

bkgirl · 28/11/2011 00:15

Looked at Twitter - I really hope that no newspaper had threatened him. I know twitter can be absolute tat, god help his family get through this. Gary was a gentleman and so many people thought so highly of him.RIP.

topknob · 28/11/2011 00:18

oh how naive am I ! I thought it was recorded today ! x

dancingmustard · 28/11/2011 02:51

Great man condolences to his wife and children.
Hopefully more will be done to prevent people like Gary slipping through the mental health net and more studies are made on why people (Mainly men) feel the need to do this.

katkitya · 28/11/2011 10:06

Four weeks before Christmas. Just goes to show how by the time you get to that stage you really arent thinking about anything or anyone else. Its so sad. His poor family.

GypsyMoth · 28/11/2011 10:10

My thoughts are also with his wife, who apparently found him

Brings back memories. As my ex tried this after I left him. I called for help as I was 50 miles away and he was prevented and sectioned. A very difficult time for her.

Ariesgirl · 28/11/2011 11:00

A good point dancingmustard - isn't suicide the biggest cause of death of young men in this country? What a terrible fact. A very close relative of mine found her own father after he had commited suicide. It has affected her into her old age.

Poor man, that he could be in that kind of mindset and absolutely no one knew.

Animation · 28/11/2011 12:24

What a terriible thing to do to your family - and have his wife find him.

I feel sad for his wife and 2 kids - but angry at what he's put them through.

Sorry - but that's how I feel.

Luckyly not many mothers do this sort of thing.

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 28/11/2011 12:27

I always am a bit bemused when people say: "so close to Christmas, too!"

It's not like a suicidal person is going to say:"I'll just get the festivities out of the way, then I'll do it!"

katkitya · 28/11/2011 12:27

I dont know the statistics on that but, a lady down the road from me do just this, from a tree in the park, she left three young daughters. Its absolutely tragic. I cant get my head around it. Life will never be the same for any of these families. Sad
