posiesofpoinsettia - An old colleague of mine took his own life recently. The funeral was yesterday. Wife, 3 small children, lived in SW - wondering if it is the same guy your DH knew. All very sad...

Oh FFS, Herbie. What is wrong with people? Angry

DebiTheScot · 27/11/2011 13:50

This is so sad. And if the suicide story is true (seems to have come from a reliable source) it is so so sad that anyone could get to the stage of feeling that is the only option without getting/asking for help.
He had so much going for him and was still so young but was in a job with a lot of pressure and one where they have to look happy and in control all the time as they are in the public eye and the media love to jump on any weak spots showing Sad

HalleLouja · 27/11/2011 13:52

So sad. My DH was just reminiscing as he is a Leeds fan and Gary Speed a hero.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 27/11/2011 13:56

Very sad news.

BabeRuthless · 27/11/2011 14:01

So sad, watched him play when I was growing up and was so excited about where he was taking Wales. All my footy mates are gutted, all fans of different teams and everyone is distraught Sad

GypsyMoth · 27/11/2011 14:03

I never knew he had an MBE!

bytheMoonlight · 27/11/2011 14:08

So sad that anyone could think that death is a better option than life.

PosiesOfPoinsettia · 27/11/2011 14:21

Run. Yes same guy I believe. I didn't know him well, but he was really nice. I keep thinking about his wife.

This has really made me sad today. Sad I was only watching him on Football Focus yesterday, thinking how relaxed and lovely he looked.

So, so sad. What a lovely, lovely bloke. Sad

Nancy66 · 27/11/2011 15:41

such a shock.

Every time i saw him on TV I always thought how nice he seemed - articulate, self-deprecating, very family orientated....ie not your typical football player at all

Very sad.

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 27/11/2011 15:45

I feel so sad for his wife and boys especially as he was found at the house. How will they be able to live there after that.

I also thought he as someone who seemed to be a really nice guy, settled, happy and wasn't the 'big I am' Sad.

LottieJenkins · 27/11/2011 15:47

I am sorry he has passed away. I posted in Chat about this and got savaged for being morbid!!! Sad

bytheMoonlight · 27/11/2011 15:48

How old are his sons?

Nancy66 · 27/11/2011 16:04

...i think they said 12 and 10 on the radio. Not certain though.

GypsyMoth · 27/11/2011 16:09

Gosh, surely they couldn't have found their dad like that. Or his wife. Doesn't bear thinking about. My thoughts are with them all, I can imagine the turmoil, a family member did similiar

bytheMoonlight · 27/11/2011 16:09
Sad

Hope it wasn't one of them who found him this morning

Ripeberry · 27/11/2011 16:12

There must be something else to this. A supposed 'good person' does not hang themselves on the spur of the moment unless they were very depressed or something.
Poor family having this happen, there must be something involved with money somewhere. Sad

GypsyMoth · 27/11/2011 16:21

Well I guess it will cone out eventually, but there were references to depression with regard to him.

But the way he did it, takes a bit of planning. So perhaps there were plans. We don't know, but I hope the press take note of what has emerged from the Leveson enquiry and leave his family in peace

HedleyLamarr · 27/11/2011 16:22

I'm shocked at this news. Gary was an exceedingly good coach, on the verge of turning Wales into a decent footballing nation after so many years in the doldrums. My concolences to his family and friends.

TheLaminator · 27/11/2011 18:12

very sad, a really decent man.

try again....

Mandy2003 · 27/11/2011 19:02

The BBC announced his death, then said (can't remember if there was an "It is thought - don't think so) he killed himself.

Excuse me, don't you need an inquest, coroner etc to decide that?

It seemed to have come out of the blue, which would be all the more shocking for family and friends. RIP.

HedleyLamarr · 27/11/2011 19:07

Thanks for that link TheLaminator. I know a Newcastle fan who has the same opinion that Gary was a pure professional, and a gent to boot.
