My friend lives about 8 miles from Tottenham she is worried. I am worried for her. The place she lives is East End London and I don't want to name and shame. I think I am an open minded person but her area is a complete and utter SHIT HOLE, the pits of the world!

It's horrible. Best thing is I can stay in town for £100 a night to see her cos I feel sick going into her area, the shit pit! Good on multiculural which hasn't worked.

Someone commented this (from Guardian, below) myself -I just don't even know what to say. I am actually lost for words.

What do you expect when people see bankers getting away with robbing
the nation.
When you see Members of Parliament stealing money from public funds,
and calling it expenses.
When you see corrupt police on the take from Murdoch's media empire.
When you realise that politicians lie to get what they want,
like Clegg and the libdems lying about tuition fees.
When you see the monarchy spend millions on a wedding,
when our country is being demolished by a rightwing tory regime.
When you see greedy Americans trying to take over our NHS,
to make profit from sickness.

What do you expect when the tories hate the population,
and is treating them as some type of illness to be cured with savage cuts.

This is the tipping point for the British population that is angry at the country
being destroyed by tory ideology.

Is Tottenham the beginning of civil unrest, and a protest against what
a rightwing tory regime is doing.
Just like 1980 when Thatcher was up to her dirty tricks then.

With the Olympics less than a year away,
and the police reputation at its lowest for years,
politicians are hated as scum,
the media criticised for dodgy reporting, and corruption in the press.

Is this the tipping point?

sundayrose10 · 08/08/2011 00:54

adam, is it Newham?

GypsyMoth · 08/08/2011 00:55

Sunday... It could well be

Ryoko · 08/08/2011 01:07

The Tories are in power what do you expect?
they make it their mission to piss off the serfs so that they fight back, giving them the excuse to make/tighten laws to control the nation even more, and make it harder for the good hard working people of the nation to ever get rid of the parasitic over privileged scum, that floats to the top of our society time after time.

ThisIsANiceCage · 08/08/2011 01:51

I am Shock at people bibbling about Tottenham and "multiculturalism has failed" - yeah, like the rest of London is one homogenous, white, first-language-English lump...

Kensington & Chelsea is also multicultural. But it's rich and multicultural. Oh look, no riots.

Or do we not call it multiculturalism when people of different faiths, cultures and languages live peacefully together in wealthy areas?

sassyminder · 08/08/2011 02:50

What multiculturalism got to do with the riots anyway??
I bet all the yobs who started it are the white trash init?

FellatioNelson · 08/08/2011 05:50

I'm up early today and I've just heard on radio 4 an interview with a small group of fantastic, eloquent young black women talking about how they feel. They sounded so angry and hurt, and yet so calm and determined. They were saying things like:

'this is your home. When you want feeding tomorrow your mother or your grandmother who have little money and cannot drive will need to shop cheaply in that Aldi you and your stupid friends just trashed. What do you think you are achieving by punishing your own community? We have very little anyway, why would you want to make it worse?'

and:

'Tottenham may be rough and unpleasant to live in, but who makes it this way? You lot do. No wonder people will keep looking down their noses at our area. there are decent people here trying to run businesses and do the best they can for their families. this isn't much but it's all we have. It's our home, and it's your home too so grow up and take some responsinility for trying to make it better.'

That's not verbatim, but it's the general gist of what they were saying. It made me cry.

MackerelOfFact · 08/08/2011 05:51

I'm between Brixton and Streatham, been awake since 4 when I heard banging and alarms going off. We live above a shop and things have been hitting off nearby. News sites confirming as much. Someone was shot dead right outside our flat on Saturday morning in an unconnected incident; I heard everything. It's getting very scary living here. Am giving notice to leave in the morning. In principle I disagree with abandoning a struggling area but I do have other priorities now.

It's difficult to lay blame but deprivation and disenfranchised feelings don't help. Funny how riots only really hit off in times of Tory leadership.

Thumbwitch · 08/08/2011 06:06

FN - me too. :(

foxinsocks · 08/08/2011 06:13

I'm no fan of the Tories but how ridiculous to blame them. The country got poor under labour! Look at the rest of the world fgs! Italy, Spain, Greece - all bankrupt or nearly bankrupt! America has had its debt downgraded. This is a global issue and at the moment, the Uk is doing better than most.

These are people who are committing crime because they think they can get away with it. Because the met are now stretched and can't be everywhere.

And this isn't about poverty. I think it's a disgrace to blame it on that. Just because you are poor, does not mean you suddenly turn into a criminal when given a chance! There are plenty of law abiding families in those areas. Sadly there are plenty of criminals too and it's that element that drives this. A small group of people can make a big noise when they want to. I just hope it doesn't carry on spreading because it's very hard to stop.

FellatioNelson · 08/08/2011 07:02

I couldn't agree more fox. It's a joke to try and lay this on the Tories - these people's lives haven't all suddenly become crap/lawless/overcrowded since Dave came in.

And I'll take a stab that a very large percentage (and quite possibly the majority) of people of working age and under living in Tottenham now were not even born, or living in this country under Thatcher.

And yes, these things do seem to happen in a Tory government. Because people who live a relatively poor existence constantly get fed the sort of divisive crap Ryoko just posted and they start to believe it.

LeoTheLateBloomer · 08/08/2011 07:20

Very well said fox.

I would never call myself a political person, but to blame the current government for everything that's wrong with this country is narrow minded to say the least. This is the result of years of mis-management. Nothing like this can happen overnight.

Ariesgirl · 08/08/2011 07:42

This is now nothing to do with any kind of social or political disaffection and everything to do with mindless, moronic thuggery. Absolutely fucking disgraceful.

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 07:54

Amberleaf: no-one is commenting on the provenance of the bullet because
it's an isolated, unconfirmed report, and many posters do not want to stoke rumour. This rumour may be right or wrong, and will only be one part of the investigation - which will cover the entire Operation Trident operation.

Does anyone know how long the IPCC investigation will take? The authorities are not permitted to release information until it reports.

Al0uiseG · 08/08/2011 07:58

Fox - I want to "like" your post, very well put.

Ryoko, it isn't the Tories who try to introduce evr more stringent social controls! It's the Labour party who don't trust any one of us to make a decision. Id cards anyone?

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 08:02

I agree with fox too.
