new thread to discuss phonehacking scandal.

OP posts:

They used to have Kelvin and Yasmin Alibhai Brown on together. He always came out the best. He always exposes hypocrisy and does it with humour.

ThisIsANiceCage · 20/07/2011 00:23

I'm behind again, but just had to get this Newsnight gem on the thread.

Apparently Earl Spencer called Brooks wrt an inaccurate story, back in the day. As he says, "She was very charming and offered no help or redress whatsover."

Nancy66 · 20/07/2011 00:30

Kelvin's moving to the DM!

teejwood · 20/07/2011 08:24

nancy is the DM concerned at all that they might lose some readers around Liverpool?

Interestingly just seen Chris Bryant on Breakfast - he made a great point that we taxpayers are going to have to pay for all these inquiries, the investigation to identify all nearly 4k hacking victims, letting them know they have been hacked etc, which is going to cost a ton. He suggested that NI should actually be footing the bill.
He also confirmed that he has been told he was hacked.

He he - that woke me up merlin. I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your encounter.

bkgirl · 20/07/2011 09:29

"News International 'deliberately' blocked investigation" er if you or I did this we would be up on a criminal charge PRONTO - obstructing police or something. Does this report count for anything? Who is responsible or does this current get out of jail free trick of blaming anyone else just do the hob nicely?
Select Committees are no use when the tory members are still licking the Murdochs bottoms.Could we not just let the polite Tom Watson ask the questions? He actually asked what the public wanted to know.

bkgirl · 20/07/2011 09:30

do the hob....oops/do the job I meant obviously

TheRealMBJ · 20/07/2011 09:51

Was he any good merlin? (And please tell me it was when he was much, much younger.)

ThisIsANiceCage · 20/07/2011 10:03

But Louise Mensch (Tory) was the other half-way decent questioner.

ThisIsANiceCage · 20/07/2011 10:04

That was to bkgirl, not a suggestion to merlincat.Grin

Terribletriplets · 20/07/2011 10:07

@Teej; yes, NI should foot the bill for the investigations. And RB etc should be fined. Sorry for liking Kelvin, (forgot he was the Sun editor at time of Hillsborough) but he is very very frank.

Has anyone read, 'Stick it up your punter'? Nancy?

bkgirl · 20/07/2011 10:16

*Still chuckling re merlincat ......Louise Mensch was far too long winded and did not come over as impartial. Just think if you or I were in front of that bunch - would we be treated with such reverence?

ThisIsANiceCage · 20/07/2011 10:20

In particular from Louise Mensch, "Have you considered suing Harbottle & Lewis, the legal firm that investigated phone hacking at the company [and caused your current embarrassment by keeping all this juicy evidence from you]?"

It's a very good question.

I've always be fascinated by the narrowness of the letter from Harbottle & Lewis which NI have been relying on throughout:
"I can confirm that we did not find anything in those emails which appeared to us to be reasonable evidence that Clive Goodman?s illegal actions were known about and supported by both or either of Andy Coulson, the Editor, and Neil Wallis, the Deputy Editor, and/or that Ian Edmondson, the News Editor, and others were carrying out similar illegal procedures."

So, chock full of other goodies, were they?

Apparently so. According to the Met, full of evidence of payments to officers.

The lawyers themselves seem a leetle pissed off:
"A legal firm that represents senior members of the Royal family last night accused News International of refusing to release them from a confidentiality clause so they could defend themselves against allegations that they helped cover up the phone hacking scandal."

bkgirl · 20/07/2011 10:34

That indeed was her best point, well said ThisIsANiceCage.
This is brilliant....Jon Stewart of the Daily Show,
bit.ly/oBsZvK

the man is just sooooooo good...

claig · 20/07/2011 10:39

Yes, I didn't think Louise Mensch was very good. Kept trying to spread the blame to other papers, kept dragging the fantastic Daily Mail into it. Praised Murdoch for his 'guts and leadership' in appearing before the committee. Being questioned by her is like being savaged by a dead sheep. Now, the Conservative MP, Nicola Blackwood, on the other committee was truly outstanding. Let's hope she rises quickly up the party. Labour will be sunk.

claig · 20/07/2011 10:43

If the public get to see the clear thinking logic, common sense and integrity of Blackwood versus the progressive prattling of the Labour spinners, then the game will be up, the 'Project' will be sunk and the public will thank Blackwood. National hero is not out of the question.
