I have. It's the one way we can punish Murdoch and save ourselves some money at the same time!

I tried the Observer yesterday (don't normally get a Sunday paper but get the Saturday Telegraph ) I think i could quite get to like it - there was a lot to read in it.

OhYouBadBadCrookshanks · 11/07/2011 12:32

lisad123 - easiest just to put you onto this thread

And how many people will be boycotting any film released in cinema or on DVD from C20th Fox? Another Murdoch owned company.

I would LOVE to cancel our Sky subs but am outvoted - it is the biggest waste of money in our household, we don't have Sport, no-one's onterested, but we seem to pay for channels and channels of dross. Angry

stressheaderic · 11/07/2011 13:27

I am cancelling Sky. We are getting BT Vision which still has all the 'Sky+' like facilities.

Meglet · 11/07/2011 16:16

This means that The Simpsons are out of bounds doesn't it Sad. Fox produces it IIRC.

Not that I've watched it properly in years as it clashes with bath / bedtimes but it would be nice to watch it sometimes.

ClaireDeLoon · 11/07/2011 16:19

I have virgin cable and don't subscribe for sky sports/films, nor do I buy any of the Murdoch newspapers. But of course money will go in a roundabout way to News Corp as virginmedia will pay them for NewsCorp owned content.

Carminagetsprimal · 11/07/2011 16:23

Do you really think a few people cancelling their sky subscription is going to make the slightest bit of difference to the zillionaire Murdochs ?

lisad123 · 11/07/2011 16:31

No but I dont watch the news. I know about the NoW stuff but whats that got to do with Sky?

OhYouBadBadCrookshanks · 11/07/2011 16:57

carmina it is about people retaining their morals and concluding that they can't give any more money to the Murdoch empire. As individuals we are reponsible for our own morality and how that impacts (in whatever small way) on the world.
Personally I feel that by buying any of their services i am helping to condone what they have done.

lisad123, as we have seen, its not just confined to one paper; the NOTW but also the Sunday Times and the Sun and thats all we've heard about so far. they, like sky are all owned by the Murdochs who seem to hold all the power in this country to the point that politicians would rather do anything than upset them lest the press turn on them.

Carminagetsprimal · 11/07/2011 17:32

Morals? - please. Murdoch decided who got the PM job - Thatcher/Blair/Cameron - they were all mates with him ( TB especially 'chummy' - a Labour PM mates with someone who crushed the print union? - how moral is that? ) - & has Murdoch ever been anything but a bit 'iffy' ? didn't stop our Leading politicians falling over themselves to be his latest fling - this phone tapping scandal is beyond disgusting and I hope all involved get what they deserve - I'm sure only a few people knew exactly how low these journalists were sinking - but don't kid yourself that people very high up will cut all ties with him - they won't.

Dianella · 14/07/2011 21:48

Oh dear, another of the intellectually challenged majority

Oh Dora Jarr, you are just the sort of person I do despair of. No critical faculty whatsoever. Sadly I know you're not alone out there.

added more onto the package

likale · 15/07/2011 00:11

No, what Sky has done for the major sports in this country has been nothing short of extraordinary so I don't feel it would be right to cancel over something Murdochs papers have done.

organicgardener · 15/07/2011 23:28

Football season starts in August so definitely not :)

RainboweBrite · 20/07/2011 23:27

Never had it in the first place on principle. Have occasionally been tempted to get it, but always decided I'd rather not support the Murdochs' business interests. I know the other moguls/companies aren't much better, but at least they're not Murdochs.

...and sometimes you take a moral stand regardless of the personal inconvenience.

We never had sky out of principle when pay a licence.

I hate his papers. I'm quite liking the guardian now. And subscribe to private eye.

There is a page on Facebook called 'boycott news international' basically the same as this thread. Worth a look, some very good articles posted on it about the scandal.

Muckyhighchair · 23/07/2011 16:21

Love sky

SpeedyGonzalez · 25/07/2011 21:11

I've always avoided Sky on the basis of loathing everything the Murdoch empire stands for. Oh, how smug I feel now. Grin

danniclare · 02/08/2011 01:53

How did we get into a situation where satellite TV means Sky?

scaryteacher · 02/08/2011 08:15

Have never had Sky and used to get very pissed off when salesmen used to come and try and sell it to me, even after repeatedly telling them that 4 channels were more than enough, and that I preferred to read a book.

Will not be getting it when I move back to UK.
