I too fear retaliation and think it will be massive.

With our Olympics due next year I bet they have something nasty planned but wonder if they will wait that long, although if thatas their next target (with a world stage so probable) they havew probably been planning it since 7/7 attacks if not before.

AlpinePony · 02/05/2011 08:16

Al-Jazeera have just reported about a woman in Times Square clutching the photograph of her dead husband, killed by the felling of the towers. I don't blame her one iota - if someone instigated the murder of my husband I'd dance in the streets too.

AlpinePony · 02/05/2011 08:16

Er... not dance at the instigation of his murder, but rather the killing of the instigator. Blush

SecretNutellaFix · 02/05/2011 08:18

This is just the start of the second book in the trilogy. Possibly one where the action becomes more severe. I do worry what the next five years brings about. At the moment it seems that most of the Islamic world is in some sort of turmoil. I am concerned that in the chaos, more people will do big attacks to get noticed and try to take over the leadership for their own means, which means more targets, more lives lost and more misery.

Tee2072 · 02/05/2011 08:18

Why shouldn't people in the US celebrate?

I also fear the retaliations.

noddyholder · 02/05/2011 08:19

Initial reports very early this am said he had been killed in a gun battle Now reports just say he is dead. According to the news he was still on dialysis and he was on dialysis in 2002 so speaking as someone who spent 18 hellish months on dialysis 9 years would be enough to kill you! And keeping him alive and putting him on trial would have been more cruel. news are now reporting it might not be him!Shock

anything to do with Kate & Wills postponing honeymoon? They sais it was to do with security

HowsTheSerenity · 02/05/2011 08:24

Would not surprise me that this is the reason the honeymoon was postponed.

Appararantly DNA evidence has confirmed it is him. But still I am a tad sceptical.

SecretNutellaFix · 02/05/2011 08:27

I've seen the pic, anyway. Certainly looks like him.

Unless they've been keeping the body under wraps for ages, it has nothing to do with the Obamas not being invited to the wedding, as invitations were sent out in February. I doubt very much the Cambridge honeymoon plans would have been affected either (they have the highest levels of security anyhow).

What is going to be interesting is the role of Pakistan, and where things go from here. What impact will it have on the war in Afghanistan? And as Bin Laden has been for some time a figurehead (a role that can continue from beyond the grave) rather than the operational commander, does it really diminish the future threat?

noddyholder · 02/05/2011 08:34

I agree meditrina he will always have an iconic significance to his supporters and this will make absolutely no difference to future attacks and operations. He was old and sick and it is highly unlikely he was the sole head figure.

I don't know about that meditrina - they could have announced this last week, while there were millions of Brits wandering around the capital.

Either way I agree with Deemented on this. I actually feel a bit sick that people are whooping and celebrating someone dying. However horrible someone is, it's still a life taken. We lower ourselves to his level when we do evil the way he is said to have.

LoveBeingAbleToNamechange · 02/05/2011 08:41

The BBC have just said there is a report his body gas been buried at sea Hmm

HalleluiaScot · 02/05/2011 08:45

THey have said that the body has to be committed with 24 hours according to Islamic custom, and they couldn't find a country willing to take it I this time.

meditrina · 02/05/2011 08:45

Whomoved: I see that as tending to support the idea that the death doesn't reduce the threat - and indeed could heighten it against the main public procession etc. That's quite a different type of target (compared to any honeymoon) - as precise times and locations were well known, and there is a whole crowd to attack in the very heart of London.

BTW - should this thread be somewhere other than Chat (so it is kept)?

milkyway07 · 02/05/2011 08:48

Can't help but think this was planned around the royal wedding - create a diversion, the whole world was embroiled in the wedding whilst the americans were planning this operation. Also I think the world should brace themselves for some tough times ahead - retaliation is imminent.

Becaroooo · 02/05/2011 08:52

sigh.

Do the US really think that now Bin Laden is dead, that its over???

Really?

He was a figurehead. There are thousands of his followers ready and willing to die for their "cause".

They have martyred him.

I hope it gives the families of the victims of the atrocities some closure, but will it?

adhdmum · 02/05/2011 08:55

buried at sea = no grave/shrine

Not a bad solution.

i think the Obamas were invited, but didn't/couldn't come cos of size of security entourage,

but I wonder if the news was deliberately withheld and only now announced after RW

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 02/05/2011 08:56

They are saying the photo is an old one.

Burried at sea - bad move. The speculation will never end now.

They should have brought him back alive and made him live out his life in a 4x6 cell on bread & water.

Becaroooo · 02/05/2011 08:57

They werent invited because they arent leaders of a commonwealth country

winnybella · 02/05/2011 08:58

I think they buried it into the sea so the that his grave will not beome a pilgrimage site.

I doubt that his death will make a huge difference either way. He hasn't been directing stuff since a while now and as to retaliation...don't know, I think Al-Quaida etc will always have a reason anyway to attack iyswim.

I've lived in NYC for years and was there on 9/11, 5 months pregnant. News this morning brought that day and the ones that followed back in a such a detail Sad

I'm glad the fucking bastard is dead.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 02/05/2011 08:59

Agree with deemented re the world is now a more dangerous place, but also feel a bit ick at the celebrations about his death. I'd have liked to see a trial, and evidence, and total openness. Now the conspiracy theories will go mental.

ZZZenAgain · 02/05/2011 09:03

I don't fear any specific retaliation tbh. I am not honestly expecting it. There were obviously some things planned anyway so they may still happen not as a direct result of this death but because they were being set up anyway For instance the 3 people arrested in Germany who planned to throw splitter bombs in a crowd. If they hadn't been detected and arrested, that might be happening now but it wouldn't have been a direct result of the death of this person.
