at the idea of Obama being under the thumb of the British - so important he didn't even get invited to the RW! Mind you, better for him that he was in the States and able to get down to Alabama (if he went?) to commiserate with the tornado-devastated people.

deemented · 02/05/2011 07:24

God help us all.

Because OBL has finally got what he wanted - to die a martyr. He will become a hero. How many will carry on his work and ie in his name? We think we've seen death and destruction? I fear we've only seen the start.

adhdmum · 02/05/2011 07:32

My dd saw some news footage and shouted excitedly, "look mummy, there's Jesus!"

I also fear retaliation.

If this happened over a week ago, do you reckon they delayed the announcement so as not to disrupt/increase risk to royal wedding?

Bucharest · 02/05/2011 07:36

I wonder if that's why they haven't gone on honeymoon yet? Cos they didn't want to have to queue for all those extra hours at the Ryanair Stansted security check? With Kate having to decant her San Tropez into 100mlbottles?

Possibly not.

RtHonLadyEuphemiaOfCaledonia · 02/05/2011 07:39

The Obamas were invited to the wedding - now I understand why they didn't come ...

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 02/05/2011 07:44

I am slightly confused about how america are allowed to go into pakistan and just kill people willy-nilly.

Bucharest · 02/05/2011 07:46

They apparently did it in conjunction with the Pakistani special forces. (Italian tv says, so not totally reliable...)

WorzselMaamage · 02/05/2011 07:48

I would have preferred him to be held in a grim american prison for the rest of his life. Death is to easy.

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 02/05/2011 07:52

Wow

HRHCaveMum · 02/05/2011 07:53

As others have said, it is a good thing he is dead, but I seriously doubt he has been running things for many years. The report I read on the BBC website says the compound they tracked him down to had no phone or Internet connection - kind of essential to run a global terror network wouldn't you think?

On the Obama/RW front: size of his secret service detail would have taken up half the Abbey! They would have wanted police background checks on all the guests to make sure there was no threat to him, etc. It would have taken the focus of the mist important people on the day - the bride and groom.
He may have been invited, but as it was not a State Occasion there was no precedent to do so.

longfingernails · 02/05/2011 07:54

HOORAY!

One thing which must be cleared up urgently is his safe refuge in Pakistan. He was living like a king for years in a Pakistani city. It is very clear that the Pakistani state (particularly their intelligence services) is not to be trusted.

noddyholder · 02/05/2011 07:55

In combination with the death of gaddafi's son there are going to be huge consequences to not only his death but the US carnival style street celebrations afterwards at a time when the whole world is unstable. Loving Obamas full on US glory taking Hmm.

Completely agree deemented (by the way you name comes up as fermented on my iphone)

monstermissy · 02/05/2011 08:00

Im pleased that he is dead, i hope he felt fear before he died. However, i dont see the need for whoops and cheers and a party like atmosphere (outside whitehouse) i dont think there are any winners here... how many people has he killed? There is already someone in his place im quite sure. Terror attacks will not just stop now. Still good that he got what he deserved though.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/05/2011 08:03

Oh God I'm so thick. I've spent the whole of this thread trying to work out how he was addressing the nation (Obama/Osama). I knew that would catch me one day.

It's good news but I can't help thinking the shit is going to hit the fan even if he hasn't been the top man for a while.

Buda · 02/05/2011 08:04

I think the world has just gotten a lot scarier. Between his lot and Gadaffi's lot - and God help us all if they join forces.

thumbwitch · 02/05/2011 08:05

I agree as well - am hoping there won't be some kind of glory competition to see who can inflict the worst damage and take over bin Laden's status.

brandnewme · 02/05/2011 08:07

I fear retaliation ...I'm feeling very, very uneasy about the whole thing! And I too would have preferred a trial..

Also totally convinced now this is the reason William and Kate had a long weekend honeymoon in the UK.....too much security risk surely to go abroad! Was saying to dh yesterday i found it extremely odd that they were only having a weekend..

Chil1234 · 02/05/2011 08:07

I think there will be some reprisals for the action but I don't think we should go around in a state of fear, any more than we did post 9/11, Madrid, 7/7 or any of the other atrocities he either organised or inspired. I think this is a significant moment and will be a blow to the whole Al Quaeda death-cult idea. I don't think Obamas speech was 'glory-taking', and can forgive the ones waving banners outside the White House this morning if they want to express their pleasure at the news. I find their behaviour far more tolerable than the ones that were jumping up and down celebrating 9/11. Pakistan will be very embarrassed that he was finally found a few miles from Islamabad and not holed up in an Afghan cave.

Hassled · 02/05/2011 08:07

I agree - it's the repercussions that worry me most. You just have to hope that if the intelligence services have prevented major incidents over the past few years they'll continue to prevent major incidents now; terrorists will still have been trying to attack. But yes, this will give them renewed motivation.

brandnewme · 02/05/2011 08:08

Really don't like the celebrations in the us though...

Longtalljosie · 02/05/2011 08:09

I feel uneasy too. Al Qaeda's structure is cellular rather than linear (and the KFC analogy is a good one) so anything could be done by anyone in its name. It's pretty unlikely that no-one's going to think it would be a good idea to retaliate in some way Sad

gregssausageroll · 02/05/2011 08:10

According to the news this morning, he was found 100 yars from the Pakistan Security Training Camp. They always say things are right under your nose where you least expect them. This will have been a very well planned attack and I don't for one minute think that David Cameron wasn't aware.

Makes sense that the Obamas were not at the wedding and that Kate and William stayed in the UK this weekend.

chrisonabike · 02/05/2011 08:11

brandnewme - me neither. Looks like just a bunch of Bud swillin' students but celebrating anyone's death gives me the creeps.

brandnewme · 02/05/2011 08:12

Never thought about the sick celebrations after 9/11 and those agreeing with the terrorist actions.....party on then i suppose !
