The police have just launched a site where you can enter your post code, and it will show you a map of crimes that happened in your area, categorised by type of crime.

www.police.uk/

In a village of 500 people, we apparently managed 2 violent crimes and 2 anti-social behaviours in December.

NormalityBites · 04/02/2011 22:36

No crimes at all on my street Grin Few antisocial behaviours on the surrounds, but nothing more.

I like living next to the police station Grin

Hackney is a complete shit hole! Well someones got to say it! Crime 1,360

Violent crime? 187.
Anti social behaviour 541.

My freind lives in Hampstead Garden Suburb.
All crime 251.
Anti social behaviour 67!
Violent crime 25!

Hackney is a right dump, along with other areas of our wonderful London.

For gods sake who lives there!

LadyBiscuit · 05/02/2011 12:13

In December there was one burglary in the entire area where I live now (small town). Compared to where I used to live in inner London - 5 just on my street

I have to say I'm not surprised - I got burgled twice living there :(

imright · 05/02/2011 12:18

Ladybiscuit. Bet you were glad to get out! especially if you hve children.

LadyBiscuit · 05/02/2011 12:22

Yep I am. The 6 year old kid coming out of my local primary school streaming blood from his nose was the final straw. My DS would have sunk in there.

imright · 05/02/2011 12:57

My freind lives in a village in Oxfordshire, so I looked at it. 7 crimes in total! and no violent or ASB ones. No wonder there's been a mass exodus out of London! Grin Anyone with any sense, who can get out does!

Mirage · 05/02/2011 21:53

No crime in my village,or my parent's village.

bluebump · 05/02/2011 21:57

None in my town but in another town up the road they deployed the police helicopter as two men had stolen a bus. That's about it!

ethelina · 05/02/2011 21:57

None in mine either.

WoodysHat · 05/02/2011 22:17

Only 1 'other' in my area Grin

Very rural area though. Have to say, I would be utterly terrified to live somewhere like Hackney, how on earth do you sleep at night? Do you ever just get used to it? I feel scared just thinking about it :(

ZazzyNu · 06/02/2011 13:25

It's nothing that you really should be scared about... it's just a pity that you can't comment or give feedback on the crimes.

I've downloaded the data and done some analysis on the half a million crimes that are included in the dataset (note i didnt say TOTAL crimes)...

Highest Crime postcode in the UK:-

CB2 3PP

The site crashed, because 'too many people' people wanted to look at it. The Home Office cited this as proof of the crime map's 'success'.

The software also has limitations - in many cases it compresses all the crimes in whole postcode areas and attributes them to one street label. The crimes can be, say, bike thefts from a university hall of residence, but the crime map can make a nice little residential street half a mile away look like some kind of murder capital. Nice for house prices!

The data capture also looks a bit iffy - for example, if you're lucky enough to have a Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator in your street, you could end up looking like a crime-riddled slum on this map simply because someone in the street can be bothered to phone the police whenever the local teens kick off or something looks suspicious.

Personally I find the whole thing a hugely expensive gimmick.
