The police have just launched a site where you can enter your post code, and it will show you a map of crimes that happened in your area, categorised by type of crime.

www.police.uk/

I just looked up where I used to live (Hackney, London) and compared it to the smallish town I live in now.

The Hackney figures were predictably alarming with nearly three times as many crimes in my old Hackney postcode than the place I live now. (1328 in my old post code, exactly 500 in my new one).

But then I thought hang on a minute. Where I lived in Hackney was very densely populated. Where I live no, not so much.

If you take the population into account, then perhaps the area I live in now - which I perceive to be much safer - is actually just as bad if not worse! A sobering thought!

How interesting!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/02/2011 02:08

ha - "on or near exH's house" - 4 crimes - reported - bet they were all him and his fucking mates.

Actually I know 2 of them definitely are.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/02/2011 02:10

actually - no 3 of them definitely are linked to him/his address thinking about it - twat arse

threefeethighandrising · 01/02/2011 02:10

Or perhaps Hackney actually isn't so bad, there's just lots of people there?!

threefeethighandrising · 01/02/2011 02:12

A one man crime wave!

I suspect lots of them are actually. Worryingly, there have been 8 robberies on my parent's road. I wonder if that's a one man / teen crimewave too.

Although the site does caution that the placing isn't exact.

Parents'. (Sorry my inner pedant has escaped!)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/02/2011 02:15

yep - well his "mates" anyhow - thank fuck he's moved from there now (I used to lived in the bloody house for 4/5yrs and know all the neighbours - bloody embarrassment walking the kids to school and seeing them hearing that the police had been out........again - usually for anti-social behaviour - but there were a couple of other incidents as well)

thelibster · 01/02/2011 02:21

None at all in my postcode. Grin

threefeethighandrising · 01/02/2011 02:24

That's interesting. Do you live in the middle of nowhere?

(Or are you very rich perhaps? - I didn't see a category for white collar crime, I suspect that goes unrecorded Wink)

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/02/2011 02:30

I'm not sure it's "strictly" crimes committed in December though..........as the ones I know (for absolute 100% certain - and that fit with the "types" on there) happened in the middle of October.........still verrrry interesting though.

KalokiMallow · 01/02/2011 03:01

My postcode is mainly anti social behaviour. Bearing in mind my postcode covers all of 4 buildings, I think I can safely say which building those all refer too. (Especially as I've had to make some of those phone calls)

KalokiMallow · 01/02/2011 03:03

Actually read it wrong, it does actually go down to street names. And yep.. still definitely my darling neighbours.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/02/2011 03:10

Grin Kaloki - I know what you mean "we don't pin point specificlaly"..........no you don't - but you've put the market in the middle of the street and I happen to know of at least one incidence (well 2 actually - but I only witnessed one) where the police were called to the same addres

thelibster · 01/02/2011 07:09

I do live just outside a smallish village but hardly "the middle of nowhere", I'm only 10 mins by car from the A1! No, I am not rich,

threefeethighandrising · 01/02/2011 09:40

Morning thelibster, thanks for the reply.

Shame about the not rich bit - me neither Grin

If you live outside of a small village, I wonder if there's no crime simply because there's so few people there to commit crime?!

Although you're not in the middle of nowhere the population must surely be a small fraction of the area I was looking at in London, which has several high rises in it for example.

If you take population into account, would cities actually seem so much more dangerous I wonder? I'd be surprised if someone hasn't done some research on this - it'd be pretty easy to do - all it is is comparing crime rate to population density)

We've just moved out of the city - for many reasons I hasten to add, not specifically to escape crime - but I do like the relative feeling of security we have in a smaller town. I'm now wondering if the difference is actually as stark as we sometimes imagine.

Is there even much difference at all if you account for population I wonder?

I reckon it's like the census website when they released it. It hit the headlines that it was now available online and everyone fllocked to it and crashed it.

Was working absolutely fine for me in the middle of the night (or whatever time I was posting) - looked at quite a few places around the country with no issues. (not working now)

upahill · 01/02/2011 10:55

not working for me.

I put my postcode in and then it says Do you mean....... and gives me about 7 different postcodes that I DID NOT MEAN otherwise I would have put them in!!

Then it starts to load and then it say Do you mean........

NicolaMarlow · 01/02/2011 10:57

Not working for me either.

NicolaMarlow · 01/02/2011 10:57

Ah no, maybe it is doing something....

Not really expecting much crime here tbh.

thelibster · 01/02/2011 12:11

threefeethighandrising, I was just surprised because, although I am not rich, the village has some really posh houses (and some small, terraced old fashioned farmworkers type properties) and is one of those commuter ghost villages, where half the houses are unoccupied for most of the week. Being so close to the A1 we are always being warned about gangs coming down from some of the northern towns and taking horse-boxes, tractors and the like so I was sure that the website would show up something at least!
