The police have just launched a site where you can enter your post code, and it will show you a map of crimes that happened in your area, categorised by type of crime.

www.police.uk/

Rural crime is rife but mainly goes unreported because the police don't give a shit if machinery/gates/diesel/cattle go missing. We have all learnt that the only thing the police do is give out an incident number. They don't even bother coming out to see you.

So in my area, which is rural and very expensive, there is loads of crime but you don't hear about it because it isn't being reported.

thelibster · 01/02/2011 12:59

That's terrible, Callisto! I suppose the police think that people are insured and/or can easily pay for replacements as they (a lot of them) are clearly loaded!

NetworkGuy · 01/02/2011 13:22

I saw a web site suggest the site had crashed at one point already.

Out of interest, since I got no joy with either Firefox or Chrome, does the 'link' to regional police forces work for you ?

I know (have looked at the web page) it says it needs JavaScript running but it does not actually tell me that on Chrome [where I have JS disabled unless I trust a website]. I do have it on in Firefox yet page still doesn't show me any regional links. Trying another PC in a minute...

ditzymare · 01/02/2011 14:21

I can't make it work.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/02/2011 14:28

\link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12336381\this is why} = as I suspected earlier - people hitting the site in their millions and crashing it Grin

Hulababy · 01/02/2011 14:36

They discussed this on radio 2 earlier. The critics were saying that what the figures don't show in the context in which these crimes were committed. In other words, many major crimes are actually carried out by a family member of someone you know, and much fewer by strangers. If the statistics and figures shown actually showed this break down then generally the figures seem less alarming. i am not saying that cries committed by family and frinends don't count - definitely not. But what I mean is that the kind of crimes most people fret and worry themselves about are attacks or crimes against themselves by a stranger - and these are far fewr, so less alarming.

borderslass · 02/02/2011 07:48

Doesn't include Scotland but the area I grew up in in Lancashire is shocking.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 02/02/2011 07:54

wow. december - no burglary, no robbery, no icle crime. one violent crime, 5 anti-social behaviour (that'll be pissed up then Grin ) and one 'other'

not bad, I suppose

megapixels · 02/02/2011 11:01

It's working for me. One violent crime and one 'other' crime. Is this only for December? Not as reassuring then.

DooinMeCleanin · 02/02/2011 11:07

maegapixels in December only there were 603 crimes in my local area including 53 incidents of violent crime. I am not surprised tbh. It's better than I thought Hmm

Chil1234 · 02/02/2011 11:10

I looked up a few areas for people I know and didn't think any gave cause for concern. Not even where my brother lives and I've always thought that was dog-rough. Would like to know how to interpret the data however... for example, if there are 4 anti-social crimes in one spot does that mean a crime on 4 separate days or 4 drunks all arrested at once? I suppose the idea is to check it fairly regularly and then we can see if things are better or worse.

NicolaMarlow · 02/02/2011 11:35

Had a look and here in December there were 4 antisocial and 2 other. Was right in thinking it's a pretty Ok place to be

NicolaMarlow · 02/02/2011 11:37

What is Other?

Chil1234 · 02/02/2011 12:05

If you hold your mouse over the category it gives you a definition for 'other' as being criminal damage, shoplifting and drug offences.

Indith · 02/02/2011 12:18

Shock one "other" in my village. It's all kicking off I tell you.

megapixels · 02/02/2011 12:40

My goodness DooinMeCleaning, where do you live? Roughly I mean, though no pun intended! Grin

threefeethighandrising · 02/02/2011 16:49

My old area got 1328. My new area is relatively safe with only 500.

DooinMeCleanin · 02/02/2011 16:49

Teesside. DH noticed that is for the whole town, not just our area. For our street there were 2 and for our particular area 94. We live near the roughest street of town and are a main route to home from the town center bars and takeaways.

The roughest street only has 7, 6 ASB and 1 violent crime, which is not bad considering there are only about 6 occupied houses as no one will live there Grin

Pootles2010 · 02/02/2011 16:51

15 violent crimes in our town of about 7000, one on our street...

linda2 · 02/02/2011 20:30

hi there, is the web site just police.uk/ and nothing after the slash???

WimpleOfTheBallet · 02/02/2011 20:42

Gosh....it's all burgalry here...about 5 in my vicinity. My Mum's area it's all anti-social behaviour. I have always been paranoid about burglars!

moonstorm · 03/02/2011 18:11

I don't really want to know. I spend more time worrying than I should Sad Smile

threefeethighandrising · 04/02/2011 04:02

linda it is, yes. It doesn't always work though. If you can't make it work, it's the site, not you!

Underachieving · 04/02/2011 04:19

I've only got 24... Not bad for social housing Grin
