It is not about combining finances but if you live together and have a child when you fill out tax credit forms they take household income into account and pay accordingly.I don't understand why when I was ill dp had to support me financially rather than me claim benefits as the single person I am.(in their eyes)He was good enough to support me then but not to recieve this tax break for his trouble

yep, and its the same when you and your co-habiting partner split. co-habitees do not have the same recourses as marrieds/divorcees. but, as said earlier it is not illeagal to have children out of wedlock, live as married etc but co-habitees are not treated the same when it ends.

just to put another oar in - do you think that the proposal includes or excludes Civil Partners? If the latter, then it's a real retrograde step and shows how thin the veneer of tolerance really is. If the former, then it's illogical, surely, to compensate a 2 income couple without children, while penalising a 1 income family (married, unmarried, single parent) with children. And of course there are gay couples with children (I'm one of them)...I just didn't see CPs mentioned in any of the press...

Bollocks. Me and DH weren't going to get married if this went through, but it looked like they had dropped it so we did.

We were all set to do the whole white dress/rings thing and just never actually sign the form. Refer to each other as husband and wife and everything, just not give the twats in charge the satisfaction of thinking we are somehow better now.

Well I am rushing out to marry DP to get this wonderful £150 a year tax break as it will more than make up for the £3146 we will lose.

As we have 4 children working is not an option for me with regards childcare right now, will be in the future though. As we decided to have 4 children and I would stat at home for their toddler years we are being penalised. That and my DP working his bum off to get 2 degrees and a good job.
