So not only do higher earning lone parents not get CB when the couple next door will still be eligible, they will also get a tax reward for being married.

BBC story

They really don't like single parents do they? Angry

Sadly, we are now seeing the results of a government almost exclusively made up of the rich and privileged. When will George O and David C EVER have to worry about how to feed or clothe their kids or how to pay a bill? they have led a life of cosseted luxury and I doubt if they even get the impact of what they are doing:
'Oh, but chaps CB is only £80 a month and I pay more than than for a bottle of wine, so they're hardly going to miss it, are they, yah?"

I really can see a revolt over this one - I don't think we should take it lying down - they will bring the working class and middle classes to their knees, while they sit in their plush offices sipping Krug.

eastegg · 06/10/2010 10:51

Strix, not enough to get annoyed about? Are you serious? This is the same govt who've been banging on about how they've got to decimate public services because of the unprecedented scale of the financial crisis. And decimate they will - we ain't seen NOTHING yet. At the same time they want to hand some money back to people just for being married in a desperate bid to make up for (which it doesn't) their incompetent and unfair CB proposals. They've managed to attack unmarried couples, stay-at home mothers and single parents all in the space of a couple of days. And they haven't even started on the really difficult cuts yet.

I'm REALLY annoyed. And scared actually. There's a tiny bit of pride though, that I've never voted Tory in my life.

hannahsaunt · 06/10/2010 11:07

So ... losing CB (ok for us but outraged by the anomalies) ... rewarded for being married (fingers crossed neither one of us dies any time soon) ... university fees to rise ... wondering why bother educating dd since clearly we should just save for a wedding and a chain to the kitchen sink.

merrymouse · 06/10/2010 11:23

need to correct my earlier post -

"Also, if your spouse dies and they haven't used their nil band, you get to use it, so have a nil band of £650,000."

Didilala · 06/10/2010 11:35

Well, while we are here making things fair for all, can we add the Married Person National Insurance Contributions rate?.

Because for those that complained that double income families earning above 44k may still keep their house benefint, you should also know that we pay 11% National Insurance Contributions each. That's about the same £100-£200 pounds as the Child Benefit.
So if single income married couples can transfer their tax free allowance, can double income married couples share their National Insurance Contributions?

You see what comes from removing the Child Benefit universality? You either make it very very complicated or it ends up being very unfair.

noddyholder · 06/10/2010 12:05

I am not asking as a co habitee for the rights of a married couple but when it comes to tax and benefits i have no choice.hardly fair.I am a single person and am happy to be treated as such but not this halfway house!

yummumof3 · 06/10/2010 13:59

I really am angry with all the pathetic excuses the tories come out with saying its too expensive to means test and they only decided this a week ago????!! Yes the country is in big debt...get the lazy gits sitting on their backsides to work, make them pay their way and throw out the rapists etc that 'will have their human rights breached for being sent back' AAAGGGGGHHHH!!!! Wot is going on...families trying to bring up their children responsibly are in the firing line at the moment - Can't understand the logic!!!
And while i am in the angry stage, we have a couple on our street who have not worked for over 7 years, one claims that he cant work because he is scared of being around other ppl( WTF????!! )the other claims disability allowance even though the dr has now told her there is no reason she can't work!!! They have had a brand new 2010 car paid for by the govmt, they don't pay insurance or tax on it and they don't pay for their rent/council tax...oh and if that's not enough they smoke cannibis all day infront of their kids!!!! DIABOLICAL!!!!

yummumof3 · 06/10/2010 14:00

Angry Angry Angry

lizard2 · 06/10/2010 17:58

we need to rally against all these cuts... what happens if you are living as a couple with a family? no tax break! In the long run the children are so undervalued in ths country... we need to demand a change - children are our future and that of the country... they neen a proper start to their childhood and a finish that sets them up for life... not in school that no one will invest in the buildings and surrounding, teachers etc.. Angry

familes need to rally in central london or in all cities....... we need to make our voces heard - we have these guys in poer for 4 years..!!! how can we organise this - any ideas?

usualsuspect · 06/10/2010 20:29

yummumof3 nice try ...idiot

HalfTermHero · 06/10/2010 20:46

What a bunch of tosspot wankers. Dh and I will claim the married allowance then spend it on mother's ruin Gin by way of protest.

LucindaCarlisle · 06/10/2010 20:51

Some of us think that Labour policies encouraged the break up of families. Labour policies discouraged marriage.

usualsuspect · 06/10/2010 20:57

and you think £150 a year tax break will encourage it?

CoteDAzur · 06/10/2010 20:58

What seems to be the problem here? Surely it is not a bad thing to encourage marriage.

usualsuspect · 06/10/2010 20:59

Sorry I didn't realise we had slipped back into the 1950s

I don't think it is a huge sum, either, but clearly some people do, given the anger on this thread.

merrymouse · 06/10/2010 21:07

Of course £150 will encourage marriage!

David is basically saying 'guys, here's some cash, pop down the registry office, maybe buy yourself a new tie, have a drink afterwards, it's all on me'.

HalfTermHero · 06/10/2010 21:16

The bit pissing me off is this: by paying and rewarding marriage the state is casting a value judgment on the status of a family. It is wrong to devalue families who do not have a marriage at their core. How very dare dc and his cuntish old timer pals send out a message that any child or family is less or more equal than another simply as a spin off of what cohabitation arrangement a couple has. I want some fucker to challenge this one in the European court of human rights cos it sure don't sound too lawful to me. It smacks of outright discrimination for the sheer fucking hell of it.

sanfairyann · 06/10/2010 21:17

I haven't read the thread so apologies. may I just say to any MP hangers on reading this

eff right off. please now imagine a stream of unprintable words flowing off the page

£"!$%&()+&%$£"!

Since when was the name changed from Tax Allowance to "Tax break"

Why is our language being americanised?

ravenAK · 06/10/2010 21:44

I'm donating my £75 to the Labour Party. Dh is spending his on gin, for me, to apologise for being a Liberal-voting tosser.

I am definitely going to write to my MP to find out why I as a co habitee am not allowed to be single wrt tax and benefits but am not married either!I don't want the measly £150 but if I had been allowed to be the single person I am when we really needed help a few years ago we could have kept our house!
