..or do I feel a bit Hmm about the girl who has broken her back in Corfu and is asking for public donations to get home for treatment because she didn't have holiday insurance? Surely, nowdays, insurance is an absolute essential for travelling? I expect I'm being horrible but I really think it's a bt much...

in Spain the staff speak English and the care is second to none

she is getting good care for her terrifying injury

the issue is that repatriation is not covered on the EHIC card

travel insurance wouldn't have covered it

she obviously felt she wouldn't need it, so arrogantly went ahead without it

now she is realising her mistake

her family should pay...they should not rely on handouts and negate all personal responsibility

I just don't get why people cannot see this

so...the next time my car insurance runs out and I am a bit brassic, I won't bother

because when I write your car off as an uninsured driver, you will have compassion for me won't ya ?

thought not....

TheFallenMadonna · 19/08/2010 22:20

It isn't "the public". It is people who are making a voluntary donation. Nobody is being forced to do so. Is it really so bad to ask for help when you are desperate?

AnyFucker · 19/08/2010 22:22

sorry, insurance would have covered repatriation

TheFallenMadonna · 19/08/2010 22:22

Because, Anyfucker, you would be harming me - causing extra expense to me without me be willing to meet it. You are not being harmed in any way by this woman or her family. Or having to pay out for her. The people who are donating are doing so willingly.

booyhoo · 19/08/2010 22:24

yes when the reason you need that help is because of your own stupidity.

she knew she was going abroad. she knew that if she were in an accident she would like to be cared for at home. she should have covered herself. she didn't and is now asking strangers to give her money. and yes people are making voluntary donations. i have no problem with that. i have a problem with her asking for them to do it.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2010 22:25

then they are very silly, TFM

they should be donating their money to people who have no control over what happens to them

Pakistan floods ?

Cumbrian floods ?

Save The Children ?

anything but a pair of dozy buggers who could have prevented this in the first place

SleepingLion · 19/08/2010 22:26

I don't think that someone receiving perfectly adequate medical care in a European hospital can really be described as 'desperate'. Having just watched another news report on the floods in Pakistan my sympathy for someone too tight-fisted/stupid to buy travel insurance is limited to say the least.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2010 22:29

precisely, SL

scurryfunge · 19/08/2010 22:29

Yes they had control.

She was stupid.

Everyone knows that "trying to get some fresh air" is a euphemism for "fell off balcony whilst pissed".

I would ask for charity knowing I was desperate and hope that someone would help me.

TheFallenMadonna · 19/08/2010 22:29

I have sympathy with the "oh blimey why didn't they get the insurance" sentiment. But it is being so vehemently expressed. I don't understand why people are so very cross that someone is asking for help when they feel desperate.

tethersend · 19/08/2010 22:29

People can ask for money for whatever they want- check the back of Private Eye.

I really don't think she's sitting in a hospital with a broken back thinking "Yes! I got what I wanted! Those gullible fools!"

AnyFucker · 19/08/2010 22:30

I am not even commenting on the "fell off balcony while pissed", tbh

if she got gored by a bull in Pamplona, I would be saying the same thing

and possibly applauding the bull, but that is another thread < ahem >

TheFallenMadonna · 19/08/2010 22:31

Really? Her spine is broken in three places. I think desperate is pretty much how she will be feeling. And just because other people are also in a very, very desperate situation, it doesn't change that.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2010 22:32

Am not cross

booyhoo · 19/08/2010 22:32

no i don't think she is tethers but it does come across as a bit of a sense of entitlement that she has asked people to donate to help her plight. her plight (being in spain rather that britain) is self inflicted.

booyhoo · 19/08/2010 22:33

yes the fallen and whether she is in spain or britain her spine will still be broken in 3 places. donations will not change that.

whomovedmychocolate · 19/08/2010 22:34

She's also quite daft to want to get on a plane if her spine is broken in three places Shock

I know you want to be home when you are sick but quite honestly, she's safer staying put if she's got a broken spine. Moving on and aircraft will, with the best will in the world, not be without risk!

scurryfunge · 19/08/2010 22:36

Yes, whomoved, waiting for the baggage carousel is a pain in the neck.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2010 22:37

I would be staying right where I was

let my family come to me

The medical care in Spain is superior to the UK

booyhoo · 19/08/2010 22:38

i think the risk is more like further injury or god forbid the plane were to crash and she was unable to be taken to safety with everyone else.

tethersend · 19/08/2010 22:38

Well, I think she's paid the price for her own idiocy and then some, tbh.

FFS, she travelled without insurance, it's not exactly crime of the century. The publicity of the story will already have made far more money for travel insurance firms than people have donated to her. She's saved them a fortune in advertising.

booyhoo · 19/08/2010 22:41

no-one said it was a crime.

and paying the price for her idiocy would mean accepting she should have paid £20 for insurance and staying put in spain. if she gets home then she hasn't paid the price really has she?

the fall had nothing to do with her having insurance or not so i don't know how you can say that is paying the price.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2010 22:41

that is true, teth

perhaps the travel insurance firms should pay for her repatriation out of their advertising budget

cheap at half the price !

tethersend · 19/08/2010 22:44

I don't understand why anyone is angry about people giving money out of their own free will to someone with a broken back who wants to get home.

AnyFucker · 19/08/2010 22:45

for the second time, I am not angry
