mammapiggy · 24/02/2009 13:18

all duvet covers / sheets etc
bathroom towels
tea towels
bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys
jeans / trousers

Just wondered how often is the norm or if you are meant to wash these things on a sort of rota so you know everything is being kept on top of. I try to do all the above quite regular but i dont have a set time for each if you know what i mean.

Basically i want to get myself organised and into a system so i know how often to wash things because i do have a lot of washing, often two loads a day and i think its cos i am not that organised with the washing.

Hope some of that makes sense!

Duvets about once a week - once a fortnight depending on how lazy I am
Tea Towels, when they look dirty (once a week)
Bathroom Towels - after 2 baths or when they smell
Don't have a dressing-gown
Jeans - once a week or fortnight.

cluelessnchaos · 24/02/2009 13:21

all duvet covers / sheets etc every 2 weeks
bathroom towels once a week but wash swimming towels every time
tea towels go through at least 4a day
bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardis every 3 wears, dressing gown hardly ever
jeans / trousers ever wear, maybe 2 wears max.

I am generally thought to be untidy, but maybe slightly obsessive on the tea towel, but in my defensive i dont use kitchen roll

eandh · 24/02/2009 15:59

all duvet covers / sheets etc - in the winter I change bottom sheet/illowcases once a week and duvet cover every 2-3 weeks, in the summer bottom sheet/illowcases every week and we either have a cotton sheet instead of duvet so thats weekly or the duvet cover weekly if thats used

bathroom towels - at least once a week - my children are grubby

tea towels- robably have a clean one out most days

bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys- as and when they need to be done so about once a month for dressing gowns. If its the dd's cardis then they are normally dirty after one wear

jeans / trousers-mmmm hard work trousers for me after 2 wears, dh gets through 2 airs a week and jeans deends if I have managed to avoid getting anything from the dd's on them then after a coule of wears and same goes with the dd's if they are clean at the end of the day they often go back on next day

Geepers · 24/02/2009 16:00

All after every use, except dressing gowns which are about once every two weeks, sheets are every other day from my bed, weekly for the others, duver covers weekly.

jangly · 24/02/2009 16:05

Have got one long black very chunky cardi that is my personal central heating. Will definitely wash it in the spring.

Something strange went on there. Got a whole page of techie gobbledigook come up when I posted the first time!

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 16:26

ha ha jangly - my personal central heating is in navy blue.

Geepers - do you really do the sheets every other day!? Do you iron them too?

I do sheets / duvet cover / towels once a week. Jeans vary - can be every wear if I am tramping around in mud but preferably once a week.

Chunky cardy - v.v.rarely but always worn over a clean top (never wear tops more than once).

Nabster · 24/02/2009 16:28

all duvet covers / sheets etc - Once a week
bathroom towels - depends, between 1-4 uses.
tea towels - daily
bulky items like dressing gowns - when I think of it
jeans / trousers - each wear, sometimes twice.

ohdearwhatamess · 24/02/2009 16:31

duvet covers, sheets - once a week (ds2's cot sheets twice a week - seem to get grotty)

tea towels - probably have clean one each day (use instead of oven gloves)

bath towels - once a week

chunky cardigan - once in while - only wear for odd hour here or there

dressing gown - once a week (forever spilling things on them)

jeans - at least one fresh pair a day, often two (get muddy from dog walking most days, or dcs put their sticky hands all over them)

dilemma01 · 24/02/2009 16:34

Duvets/sheets, one a week, more if needed.

Towels, about every third use or when they are used to mop the flood in the bathroom dc have created.

Tea towels, daily.

dressing gowns, whenever washing basket is empty, which is not very often

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 16:36

off to pop the bath towels in the machine now. Realising that they may have dodged the wash recently.

ilovesprouts · 24/02/2009 16:36

bedding once a week, jeans dont wear em towels/t towels every day chunkey jumpers etc one a week dressing gown once a week then again im a clean freak i wash 2-3 times a day

SpringySunshine · 24/02/2009 16:39

You all really wash your jeans that often?

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 16:43

Springy mine tend to get muddy around the heels, plus DD has a lovely tendency of using mummy as a face-wipe after eating. When full she announces 'cuddles' and launches herself at me burrowing marmite or mash into my clothes.

happywomble · 24/02/2009 16:43

all duvet covers / sheets etc - every 2 weeks

bathroom towels - once a week (hand towels) or less often (bathroom towels)
Swimming towels - after every use

tea towels - don't really use
bulky items like dressing gowns - once a year maybe - hardly ever wear

jeans / trousers - once a week maybe or sooner if they have a mark.

Given that we all bath or shower every day I think this is sufficient.

Some of the replies above are not very eco friendly.

Mintyy · 24/02/2009 16:45

Duvet covers - fortnightly (sheets and pillowcases weekly).

Bath towels - weekly.

Hand towels - every 2 or 3 days.

Tea towels - I use 2 or 3 a week but we don't do much drying up.

Jeans - ? after 5 or 6 wears? I do the sniff test I'm afraid.

I try not to be constantly washing because its boring, it costs a lot of money, it is environmentally not very friendly and it plain isn't necessary.

I use my own bath towel for a week before I change it. I have just stepped out of a 15 minute shower every time I use it and I hang it out to dry infront of a radiator and it DOES NOT SMELL.

SpringySunshine · 24/02/2009 16:46

LuLu, your DD sounds adorable, but an absolute handful

Mine don't tend to get visibly dirty (ah, the luxury of not having children yet), so I pretty much leave them until they do

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 16:48

OK, slightly OT and thread-hijacky, but on a related subject... how often do people mop their kitchen floors. I have a nasty feeling people are going to say daily thus making me feel like an utter slattern. But honestly - how often?

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 16:50

And thanks Springy.

SpringySunshine · 24/02/2009 16:50

I kind of just... don't.

I vacuum it & clean up any spills immediately (using proper floor wipes, not just kitchen roll, if it's anything but water), but I don't ever mop the whole floor because we don't wear our shoes inside & it never gets properly dirty otherwise. Again, it'll be different when we have a baby crawling around, I'm sure.

catMandu · 24/02/2009 16:53

The trick with towels is to only have white ones, then you can see the dirt as can the dc's and they get put in the linen basket as soon as they need washing.

ilovesprouts · 24/02/2009 16:53

twice a day only as we have a dog and she brings tons of mud in

CompareTheMeerkat · 24/02/2009 16:54

all duvet covers / sheets etc - supposedly about fortnightly. In reality less often.

bathroom towels - somewhere between a week and two weeks

tea towels - they get washed when they have been used a lot. I have no idea how often

bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys - about a month or two

jeans / trousers Depends how often I wear them and how much grub accumulates. I get about 5 wears out of a pair of jeans on average.

Kitchen floor gets swept about weekly and mopped about monthly. Even I admit this is less often than it "should" be
