all duvet covers / sheets etc
bathroom towels
tea towels
bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys
jeans / trousers

Just wondered how often is the norm or if you are meant to wash these things on a sort of rota so you know everything is being kept on top of. I try to do all the above quite regular but i dont have a set time for each if you know what i mean.

Basically i want to get myself organised and into a system so i know how often to wash things because i do have a lot of washing, often two loads a day and i think its cos i am not that organised with the washing.

Hope some of that makes sense!

I do wash swimming towels after one use

I mop the entire downstairs so playroom, kitchen, dining room and lounge plus porch every day but dh puts his muddy bike in the playroom when home from work, dd2 still flings dinner around so dining room needs to be done and also dd2 toilet training so normally at least one accident a day in the lounge porch gets filthy in the winter and since I have the mop out most days I tend to run upstars and do the bathroom at the same time

whooosh · 24/02/2009 17:00

all duvet covers / sheets etc
Once a week for all beds-try not to do it on the same day or you will run out of drying space!

bathroom towels-Once a week-diff day to bedding!

tea towels- Every two days (maybe three)

bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys- Depends on where I have been-if I have been sat on the tube then the minute I get home,if only around home/school run etc then after a few wears-(this obviously applies to chunky cardigannot dressing gown)

jeans / trousers-After one wea if visibly dirty or had a"hot" night out.Other than that, after a couple of wears.

CompareTheMeerkat · 24/02/2009 17:01

But they do tend to hang around a bit. Would be better if I got them out of the bags and aired them and then they wouldn't need washing.

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 17:02

Do you do it just before bed? I find that is the only possible time to be mopping the floor as otherwise it gets walked in before it's dry. And last thing at night my motivation to get the mop out is usually rather low.

TheThoughtPolice · 24/02/2009 17:03

Master bedding - once a week, sometimes twice in high summer

Kids bedding (3x double beds) - once a fortnight

Guest bed (1x double) - between guests

Bathroom towels - I put a wash on once/twice a week but they are changed every other day

Teatowels - a clean one every day unless I've been doing something v mucky

Dressing gowns - once a week/once a fortnight

Jeans and trousers are washed after 2 or 3 wears unless they are grubby or have been somewhere smelly !

Woollens/delicates - I do one wash a week of these including bras, knitwear and silks, on the handwash cycle.

TheThoughtPolice · 24/02/2009 17:05

I mop my kitchen floor twice a week and hoover it probably every other day

MerlinsBeard · 24/02/2009 17:12

i wash things as they arrive in my hand from teh basket!

I have 3 sets of duvet covers for our bed, bathroom towels i have in abundance thanks to recent wedding , dressing gowns go in with towels, jeans get washed with other darks

MerlinsBeard · 24/02/2009 17:14

oh you mean after how many uses! ()

duvet covers - when i remember

bathroom towels - after 2 uses if DCs or me, 1 if DH

tea towels - i have a dishwasher so either when they have been soaked or when they land in the mini pile on the floor by te washer

dressing gowns only get worn for a few mins each morning so i do them every so often

all clothes get worn twice here so unless the are muddy/dirty - after 2 wears

BonsoirAnna · 24/02/2009 17:18

Duvet covers and sheets - once a week
Bathroom towels - twice a week
Tea towels - don't use them
Dressing gowns - once a fortnight
Chunky cardigans or large sweaters - probably about once every 10 wears
Jeans/trousers - adults: once every 5 wears; children - after one wear

I cannot really do a rota for adult clothing as it is worn quite unpredictably but the rest can be done to a rota.

Two loads a day isn't much for a family.

CaptainKarvol · 24/02/2009 17:19

Mostly weekly, except duvet covers, which I aspire to do fortnightly, but it is more like 4 weeks in truth, dressing gowns - what, people wash them? I would if they got something spilt on them I guess, and chunky cardies would be when they look dirty. Don't things like that usually need dry-cleaning anyway?

I always find these threads bizzare, and it opens my eyes to a whole new world where people are always washing stuff...

eandh · 24/02/2009 17:22

I mop once the dd's are in bed and we've had dinner , normally by that point dh is on the sofa and I end up mopping the lounge last night and then sit on sofa till they are dry but getting carpet in louge once dd2 has mastered toilet training 100%

happywomble · 24/02/2009 17:25

Bonsoiranna - I think 2 loads a day (14 loads a week) is too much (not environmentally friendly) unless your family has more than 5 people in it.

I save washing up for a few days so that there is enough to do full loads.

sagacious · 24/02/2009 17:29

Onlly read op and so:

all duvet covers / sheets etc ** once a week
bathroom towels **twice a week
tea towels **don't use
bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys **chunky cardies probably after 2nd use, dressing gowns.. don't have
jeans / trousers ** once a week (I live in my jeans and tend to wear them to death)

Will read thread and find out if i'm a fraek/freak

MadameCastafiore · 24/02/2009 17:30

all duvet covers / sheets etc - every week
bathroom towels - every week
tea towels - every 3 days
bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys - when they dirty
jeans / trousers - when they dirty

sagacious · 24/02/2009 17:33

Wash gym stuff after every use and swimming towel after every use as well.

I think I am relatively normal

cece · 24/02/2009 17:41

all duvet covers / sheets etc - fortnihgtly in winter, weekly in summer
bathroom towels - weekly or more if they get dirty
tea towels - after a day or two, depending on use
bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys - as they need it eg/ not so often!
jeans / trousers - after wearing a few times. Depends how hot/sweaty/baggy I/they have become..

lizziemun · 24/02/2009 17:56

all duvet covers / sheets etc - WEEKLY

bathroom towels - WEEKLY

tea towels - CHANGED DAILY

bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky cardys - AS AND WHEN AS WE DON'T TEND TO USE THEM

jeans / trousers - WEEKLY

SlightlyMadScotland · 24/02/2009 18:16

OK I am officially a minger!

all duvet covers / sheets etc - Once a month (but I DDs a different week to ours)
bathroom towels Once a month
tea towels I normally have 2 tea-towels out at a time; for a week - but mostly use DW and drainer anyway so rarely use them
bulky items like dressing gowns / chunky Dessing gowns (about once a year ; but to be fair they tend to live on the back of the door and are not actually used v often at all
cardys - Don't really wear them. DP wears chunky jumpers for about a week. Then they go into wash basket until I have enough woollens for a load (about once amonth)
jeans / trousers. DP about once a week. Me twice a week. DTDs 3-4 times a week. DD3 daily.

n5rje · 24/02/2009 18:43

How do you all manage to get your tea towels to last so long. I don't use a dishwasher and have 4 messy DSs and I use 2/3 per day and seem to spend all my time folding them and putting them away - I must have about a dozen. Am I abnormal ? I seem to be about average on all the other items.

How does everyone have space to dry sheets and towels all the time. Once a week is as much as I can manage and the place is permanently draped in laundry anyway. Do you all tumble dry everything?

Yup - not that many doors though.

Laundry is such a relentless chore. It just never, ever ends. Machine constantly on. Doors constantly draped. Piles constantly waiting to be ironed and put away. Piles constantly waiting to be put in the machine....
