How to Keep a Good Cleaner

Bit of a rant here,

And I'll preface this by saying that only women do this. Men keep out of the way or will go out to leave you space to clean. Maybe women feel some sense of embarrassment at needing a cleaner, I don't know.

Anyway...

When your cleaner is present and especially if the kitchen is something they clean on their visits, do not:

  • Make hot drinks
  • Put the dishwasher on
  • Put laundry on
  • Make a hot, cooked meal
  • Try to "tidy up" or "clean off sides".
  • Put clean crockery away
  • Sort out old clothes
  • Do any sorting of anything.

The reality is that many if not most people have a cleaner because they do not have the time or skill to clean properly. When you try to get ahead of me when I am there and you're not doing it properly, it wastes my time and your money when I have to wait, or do it properly after you. Anything you wanted to do should have been done before I got there. Anything left, I will sort. That is why you have a cleaner.

Please, keep out of the way in one room, or go right out of the house.

I'm about to tell someone that I won't be coming back as their wife won't stop doing this and she's now at home all the time.

I'm working so don't have time for hot drinks or eating.

Making a hot meal means the cooker etc is hot when I may need to clean it. It means you're in my way and the logical, systematic route I took to cleaning your house now has to be adjusted to something less optimal so I don't waste time waiting for you to leave the kitchen and then properly clean up after you.

I think it should be pretty easy to keep out the way for a few hours once a week, fortnight or month so the person you hired can do their job. Part of the reason you've hired them is because you lack the time or skill to do it properly yourself. So if they're saying that you need to be out of the way for those purposes, it makes sense to get out of the way.

My husband is a different sort of tradie and nobody ever does it to him. They'd never dream of it. They keep out of his way so he can do his job effectively.

There are some newer on the scene cleaners who charge nearly 1.5x what I do and up to 2x as much. They make it clear they want the property to be free when they arrive to clean and they seem pretty busy. Maybe I should take a leaf out of their book.

I stay out the way of my cleaner, i stay in my office whilst she is cleaning!

however on the trade bit, my husband is a plumber and i cant tell you how many people are literally wanting to be in the bathroom starring at what he does!!!

Not exactly. I was doing one area of the kitchen, cleaning off sides and whatnot, and she came in the kitchen and was faffing around. Unbeknownst to me, she had turned on a hob behind me.

I moved on to another counter which is next to the stove and started cleaning that section down and my elbow touched the one she had turned on. Briefly, because I reacted to the heat, obviously. But yeah.

Maybe it's plumbing specifically. My husband's field doesn't gather asmr youtube followers like Plumbing does!

I’m a cleaner. This doesn’t bother me at all. I just work around people.
The only thing that does annoy me is if they come into the kitchen to make a cup of tea/coffee whilst I’m in there is if they don’t offer me one!
Most of the time I wouldn’t accept one anyway as I’ll be weeing for the next 5 hours but it would be nice to be asked

PippetyPoppetyPie · 30/09/2026 19:38

Can I ask why the dishwasher being on bothers you? I literally can’t think of a reason why this would be annoying? I don’t think I’ve ever opened a clients dishwasher, if there are pots on the side I’ll wash them in the sink

Because most of my client's kids (right up to adults) have loads of washing up all over the house.

In this house, for example, it's up to a whole load in the machine. It basically means that I have to wash it all by hand if the load isn't finished by the time I get around to the kitchen. I do have a preferred way of doing a typical townhouse but whether I go top to bottom or vice versa, I run the dishwasher last so I can get as much in as possible from all around the house.

The other reason is that I am the one who cleans out the dishwasher in most of client's homes? Why? Because if I didn't, then it wouldn't get done at all often enough and it ends up making more work for me on one way or the other. Dishwashers are very effective, if they are maintained well. So I often want to make sure the thing is clean enough before it is run.

Hi there @LapinR0se, hoping this doesn’t come across as rude but am curious about your 2x 6 hour cleans a week. Sounds amazing - your place must be spotless! But can I ask is this because you have high standards of cleanliness or create a lot of mess over the week!? No need to answer if you don’t want to, am just curious (also daydreaming about how nice it would be to have things at this level of clean and sorted!)

It’s because my husband and I both work full time, we have a big house (7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms) and my children don’t lift a finger to clean. Plus we have hairy dog.

My niece does our ironing and some of our laundry. We have a pretty good family system for the house.

It isn't an AMA. I thought it answered it well. No we don't have a cleaner because we have a good family system. We do pay my niece to do some ironing and laundry.

About 35 on average. I do have an AMA on being a house cleaner if you'd like to ask this in a more appropriate place.

I'm intrigued as to what's been breaking talk guidelines while talking about cleaning!

Moreorleaswhatiexpected · 30/09/2026 22:04

I can’t believe someone asked if
someone working what must be a bloody hard 35 hour week cleaning other people’s toilets for what can only be a few quid above minimum
wage… has a cleaner.

TheBabyFatmoss · Yesterday 08:38

I’d be really suspicious of anyone working in my home who insisted it had to be empty.

Ha American cleaners always have a "cleaning lady". I think it is less common here.

Well that's why I've never mentioned a preference myself. I think it seems a bit dodgy. I see why people do though if you have a lot of clients who just don't get it.

But they’re very successful and charge double what you do?

They're also new. A lot of cleaning businesses start off well and are quickly fully booked, but you actually need reliable regular clients and the ability to not become physically exhausted to be successful over the long term.

They spend a lot on marketing atm.
